Any one else ever sheered the head off a CAS bolt?

It's not affecting anything so I've left it for a short while and the other 2 bolts are holding the CAS in place no bother but I still want it out and then i can replace them all for new ones.

So, it's sheered off where there's nothing to crab on to with grips. It's a little tight to get a drill in there too and I'm not keen on drilling down there anyway but im guessing ill have to.

What do ya's think? Is there any other way of getting it out?

Personally I'd leave it mate - the other 2 bolts will hold it in place well enough.....

....The only thing I can think of, is some time ago, somewhere, I remember seeing screws/bolts which tighten anti-clockwise. You drill the offending bold with a small hole, screw in the extractor and undo.... Still involves drilling though...

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Local garage? It's a 2 minute job and they will need to do that kind of thing on a daily basis.

What he says. Screw extractors are hardened steel and quite brittle. They can snap (especially the smaller diameter ones) if forced

leaving a bit of hardened steel in the drilled hole, which is not nice to remove.

If not I'm sure you can just take that cam cover off,

And the cas bracket has 3bolts holding it on either replace with another used one or it will be easier to have it drilled...

Just need a left turning drill bit !

No kidding, drills in the opposite direction and it should bite and unscrew.

Spray some sort of rust eater on it to clean up what thread can be seen.

I've had some sheared bolts on my zed and managed to get them out this way.

You can't honestly tell me that this has ever worked with a seized bolt/stud? Unfortunately, the best way to remove that stud is to drill and easy out. Just don't use the cheap chocolate stud extractors as Andrew has pointed out, you'll potentially make things worse. Snap-on sell very good easy outs, either individually or as a kit, I use these regularly and with the 7/16" drive on them, I have exerted some serious force on them without failure.

I used these when I had a bolt snapped on the engine and thay worked a treat image.jpg

Drill & screw extractor

never...extractor snaps in the wrong hands and your removing summit 10 times harder and un-drillable:eek: Drill it with care and throw a 6mm tap into it. Iff i was doing the job ide put a nut over it and Mig the centre, heat off the weld and easliy wind it out. But seriously that CAS is going nowhere with 2 fixings:winkiss:

Dremmel????

will fit in the gap easier than a drill.....

To start the hole with 1/8th bit.......open up to correct size for easy out....... then as advised penetrating fluid...... then easy out the little bugger..... lol

Bought some scree extractors while I was out. I have the problem of not having a small enough drill though and I don't really want to spent loads on a screw that makes on difference to anything

Just take the cam cover off and remove the cas bracket...

Then either replace it or drill extract/drill tap it on the bench easy peasy lol...

Thanks for that.

Does that side timing cover come straight off? I seem to recall that one of the sides is worth to get off than the other for some reason
