1995 Silver Series IV Slicktop Version S - Taking To Another Level

Took many items off my engine and have sent them to a metal polisher just a few miles from me and below are the results of his and my work :cool3:.

This is my aftermarket radiator bracket, it was or is stainless steel but now highly polished. The SLICKTOP plate was made by TwinTurboRich and I've had this powder coated and bolts on with some stainless steel allen capped nuts and bolts.

This is my Tokyo Auto cooling panel, original these come in silver or blue from z32-zone in Japan, mine was silver and the polisher told me it was anodized but now polished up as you can see. The logo was originally silver and riveted on, I drilled these out and had it powder coated, again bolted on using the same attractive stainless bolts.

Then the usual polished up water pipes, these will be used with red silicone hoses and mikalor t-clamps

Finally for this post, had my Altia sills polished, this removed many many scratches incurred from over the years, now I have a mirror finish.

The screws I have in the photo are the ones that came with the car. It is difficult to see from the parts fiches what type

of heads the fixings have and I can't seem to find a photo (part no: 08363-61625). I have a photo which does show the

"radio console screws" being used instead.

I didn't realize the pic you put up was yours Andrew, so sorry to disrespect your car but i think the bolt type heads are too 'heavy duty' to use there, i know the ones in the bottom will match head wise but these go into proper 6mm threads, whereas the higher up two are self tappers as you well know.

No problem Andy, they are so tucked away and largely out of sight that I haven't considered changing them out. This is the photo I have

showing the "pan head screw" types I think you are referring to?

Although these are solid, i've been a bit embarrassed of the surface rust on my bumper brackets on a few pics i have put up, so today i took them off and got to work with my rotary tool getting rid of all the loose stuff, it was particularly bad as you'd imagine where the arch liner attaches.

Then i think these brackets were what rust eater was invented for . I'll get the primer and paint on them next, they'll be then good to go for the next 22 years.

When's it going in for paint Andy?

It's supposed to be booked in but i'm not pressing at this time of year, happy to have it sorned and in my garage.

It has given me time to attend to a lot of jobs, part of which you see on these pages Dan, however though, once i get back some parts from The Great Mondo and get them fit i will be 100% ready.

And fitted, much better.............

I'm keeping, not much weight about them and in any case i recently in my wisdom put back the l/h side one because it was missing, actually only these remain, everything else has been removed by the airbox remover, not me btw.

With my SRS steering wheel being away getting retrimmed, so if my respray guy does get in touch in the meantime i'm a bit stuck....cannot move it you see.

So i took a chance on this wheel off a breaker just in case, it was covered in fungi but underneath all its grime i thought it would be ok and sure enough it's fantastic with hardly a mark on it .

No good to me after - so it'll be up for sale at some point in early 2017, here it is aherm fitted/held on by me for now !!

When i am now low on fuel my cluster symbol illuminates and here is the thread on how i did that....

http://www.300zx.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?186675-How-to-fix-low-fuel-light-not-coming-on

On putting it all back together i decided to use both or all the insulation pieces i have acquired from various breakers, plus there is some attached to the underside of the shelf, hence the black rubber being visible on the below picture.

DSC05656.jpg

It just lifts it slightly, gives more support and an all round more snug fitment .

DSC05657.jpg

The 't' section trim behind the seats has been perfectly centralized, i offered in all its 5 screws and then when i was happy tightened them all up in turn, all gone together very nicely indeed :thumbup1:.

Looks a tad pink but i assure you it is not :winkiss:.

What product for rust removal do you use Andy?

  • Author
Love the rear panel Andy, I fancy one of them for myself :shifty:

I don't like taking the later ones apart if i'm honest Joel, they seem to of used a different sealant that takes a higher temperature to yield, once apart though it's straight forward work.

What product for rust removal do you use Andy?

Nothing fancy, used my bench wire wheel and for the areas that cannot reach i used my rotary tool with a small grinding bit actually, that scratched away all the loose bits plus a bit more as you'd imagine.

Then what you ask.....Holts Rust Terminator, similar treatment is a must and that product i've had a long time in the garage, so long in fact i cannot find it available today, primed over and then satin blacked.

On my current fitted one the screws holes are not too bad for the hazard assy and although cannot be seen, around a screw hole holding it on, it's gone a bit brittle, still 4 more screw holes though that are sound to hold it on with, i thought time for a new one and here it is, complete with part number on the box, just over £30 this was fyi, i wont show it fit because it'll just look like the 'old' one.....

DSC05686.jpg

And these things, they are the bonnet hinge covers, visible near the scuttle at all times, one of mine was sound but the l/h was not, so bought just the one (£15), quick blow over on both new and old with some satin black, you can see some other broken tatty ones as well in this picture, only fit for the bin these two .

I never intended doing this job today but when i picked up my scuttles, i noticed they weren't up to scratch.

So i spent 'only' 5 hours on them today getting rid off past paint build up, regretted started the job at one point because i thought the nitromors was not a good idea and messy but they came good after using lots of wire wool. Not bad as they stand now but the plan is to sand back some more and get even smoother.

I've bought a few pairs over the years, so i don't know if these are an exact pair but as you can see they are two different colours once taken right back.

I could satin black myself but the plan is to hand them over to my paint guy for that professional finish .

I'll update this thread for Andy, I think.

A good few years ago, I did various parts for him. As he's decided to revamp his interior using Alcantara, those parts simply didn't fit in with the new scheme at all. So they headed my way once again...

Now it's all Alcantara and perforated leather, complemented by some dark grey stitching! Lurvely! :thumbup1:
