Thinking about importing a 300 from japan - 2000 model maybe - at least as new as possible. How much work is it to make a RHD drive into a LHD?

Featured Replies

No idea, maybe best to ask on an American forum. No one on here is likey to have done it as we drive on the correct side of the road, ie the same side as the japs. So there's no need to convert here.

At the very least, you'll need the following

- a dash obviously.

- the door panels are different, so really, you'll have to change most of your interior as nothing will match unless you're retrimming

- you'd need to cut holes for steering column, clutch master and brake master on the other side.

- new brake lines

- Weld in a new battery tray

- new steering rack

- engine wiring harness goes into the car at a different spot more cutting, you'll need a 16 bit type loom....however not sure the 2000 model even uses that?

- a/c lines are in a different spot more cutting.

Quite a lot of work and very involving. I wouldn't tackle it.

As bolt mentioned, if importing from Japan then you won't need to convert it, japs are RHD. Would love to see what's available from there though in terms of late models! They are as rare as hens teeth here. Think I have seen 1 99spec import for sale here in 4 years!

Trond lives in Norway so he would want to convert his imported jspec RHD to a LHD

I've never looked, but I had assumed that every shell has both sets of holes either marked and not punched, or blanked, as all models were made in the same factory in Japan.

The problem with getting LHD specific parts for a 2000 model of course is that there weren't any made, so you would have to use older '95/96 parts from the US as those would probably be the most recent available. Not sure whether that applies to any parts that matter of course, but dash would be the most obvious. I would have thought that everything else is do-able though.

Oops that's what comes of reading the forums whils I'm still asleep.

Also looked in converting a '99/RHD 300zx to LHD (I owned a '99 version-R a couple of years ago).

You will need a LHD shell to start with and the interchangeable parts from the RHD car are mostly mechanical items such as engine, front/rear subframes and bodyparts.

Most of the electronics (wiring) and interior won't fit (front seats, dashboard, door panels, center console, etc, etc) and the interior is one of the things that makes a '99 spec so special.

You will be surprised how many parts are (slightly) different and won't fit a LHD car.

So best is to leave it RHD or just get a LHD car in really good shape.

Good info Lymon - and sound advice at the end I reckon....

....TBH it's not really economically viable IMO; and you might actually find the cost of importing one from the USA not much more expensive than converting one!!

A lot of info- thanks :) completly forgot about the electronic inside the car. Just thinking about the work with rewiring makes me :cursing: I have all the other parts. But it would be a bit of a shame to use a good ccar for a donor. So I've decided to leave the 2000 model project then.

What's so different with the 99 spec interior ?

in some versions it has red stitching on leather items:

(in the non leather '99 spec versions) also the parts that are normally cloth/alcantara on the doorpanels and under the dash, are made of some really nice fabric...it has a carbon-fiber look.

You can a small part of it here:

The non leather '99 specs have recaro seats

The non recaro '99 specs have some really nice leather, also on the doorpanels/under the dash/etc.
