Which brake calipers are best?
With the cast-iron calipers, are all four made of iron or just the fronts...?

Which brake calipers are best?
To start with, I'd like to say that this is only about the standard Sumitomo calipers, not Brembo upgrades or anything like that :) Anyway, I have a set of alloy calipers on my Zed at the moment and a set of cast iron calipers that I bought to refurb. I think right in saying that the alloy ones have the "ribs" around the piston mounds on the outside, whereas the iron ones don't have these... is that right? Which are the better (or more preferred) calipers? I seem to recall there was some issue with warping with the alloy ones, or is that a bit of a myth? So, which set of calipers am I going to be better off refurbing - alloy or cast iron? :)

Front foglight lenses (glass sections)
I have a pair of ridiculously clean and good condition front foglight lenses. Ideal for someone wanting to clean up their front end without having to buy new ones from Z1 or similar :) No cracks, no chips, no scuffs... just lovely transparent glass in superb condition. Please note: these are only the central glass sections - the clear plastic end pieces are not included! £20.00 the pair, including delivery :thumbup1:

"You picked a fine time to leave me, Loose Wheel!" - Mondo's new Zed.
So, Mondo made the trip across to Lancashire yesterday (via Huddersfield) for some of Andy's hospitality and workmanship :) I'd already "smoked" the insides of my JDM indicators to help them blend in with my gloss black 'tache, but this then meant that the foglights were pretty prominent in their chromeness. A look reminiscent of a UK-spec Zed, someone said. But I wanted full stealth on the front end, so me and Andy put our heads together and came up with these: The full internals of the foglight have been sprayed gloss black (reflector and fog bulb removed), new lenses and side sections, and all secured with black silicone. The new internals comprise of a black-painted board with 6 super-bright LEDs mounted in each unit. So, as you can see, the entire thing just looks dark and blends in very nicely with the black 'tache and the smoked indicator units :D But! When you turn the sidelights on.... These are seriously bright and, frankly, look absolutely sensational! They really (in my opinion, anyway) update the front end of this car and don't look like any of those stick-on DRLs that you can get off eBay. Everything just looks factory, especially as the foglight lens diffuses things just enough that the LEDs are all but invisible when switched off, then hit the lights and BAM! - a nice bright white light that isn't dazzling to other drivers. :thumbup1: I love 'em. Happy Mondo!

Clean shaven or not.........?
Mine's gloss black, like my roof bars and mirror bases, and I prefer it to any other colour or shade on there :)

What did you do to your zed today?
Something much more subtle than that, young man :thumbup1: Got home about 30 minutes ago so I'll get some nice pictures in the morning of mine and Andy's brainchild...

Nice extras on this one.
Have you read my assessment from this afternoon...?

If it was a Supra, then it'd no doubt be worth £4k as it is, considering their current values. But I honestly believe that there are better Zeds out there for the same amount (if not less). Some of the issues are purely cosmetic, but they still cost a fair bit to put right properly (as I personally know). And the engine issues... well, I wouldn't like to speculate on what's causing them. Although I don't think new plugs are going to make a great deal of difference!

And that's the important thing... :dots:

I've edited my original post as you've just reminded me about the smoke from the exhaust whilst idling :)

Just got home from having a good look around this Zed. I'll start with the good points :) Good points: Factory manual Alcantara trim is in good condition Altia quarter window shades (working) and tail panel (not working) Larger SMICs fitted Aftermarket exhaust Nardi steering wheel Turbo timer (if you like that sort of thing) on top of steering shroud Electric Hicas Targa blinds present and fitted Bad points: Engine runs like utter crap!! 5 cylinders at best. No amount of fiddling with connections or wires seemed to help. Really struggles to build any revs whatsoever beyond idle Mammoth boost leak! Boost gauge sits in the positive vacuum scale on idle! Some blue / white smoke while idling All roof trims, windscreen trims, scuttle panels, and door edgings are shot to pieces Paintwork is pretty old and tired-looking Passenger seat electrics not working at all Driver seat electrics, only forward and backward movement works Sill flanges bent on both sides of the car Perspex panel is a lovely shade of burgundy Alloys badly kerbed and scuffed all round Front brake discs carrying a bit of a lip When I fired it up, the guy said they had a set of plugs on order for it. I didn't have the heart to tell him that it had the world's biggest boost leak. The idle hunted significantly and the engine just sounded quite poorly, presumably due to it running on 5 cylinders and having said enormous boost leak. Structurally, it looks and feels like a solid car, but the running issues and general tattiness when you look at it would dissuade me if I was in the market for a Zed. I think there are better examples out there for similar money. There you have it. Some nice bits fitted to it but, overall, I don't think it'll sell any time soon. The difference between this Zed and my own is staggering!

Nice extras on this one.
It's not showing anywhere on their official website, which is strange. I'll have a wander over this afternoon and see what (if anything) I can find out about it :thumbup1:

I'll go in my Zed then and show him my stuff - see if he wants that knob freshening up

Very local to me, this one. I might go and have a nose around it... :)

Takes about the same amount of time to trim that a gearknob does. Which means my hourly rate is rubbish!

Yellow UK 300zx
Agreed. Reminds me of Ford's old Citrine Yellow from back in the 90s. Unless there's a bizarre filter on those pictures, I'm guessing respray.

About 2.5 hours, plus a bit to fit the new assembly into the car. :)

Here's a job that's been niggling me for months and months now, that I finally decided to get sorted: the handbrake handle. Plastic, tatty, scuffed... just an eyesore, really. :( So this morning, I changed it to this: Solid and perforated Andrew Muirhead Sateen Black leather - gorgeous stuff :) I added the French seam on the top edge solely for decoration, then hand-stitched the rest. It looks and feels infinitely better than it did and, thankfully, is no longer letting the rest of the cabin down :thumbup1:

Further to the above post, I've just spent the last couple of hours swapping out the climate control ECU for the S2 one. That was fun (not at all)! Driver's seat out, dash panels off, heater ducting out... and there was still no room to get at anything, even with me laid on my back in the footwell. But it's all done now and, thankfully, everything works as it should do :) I now have complete control of where the air is being directed and a 4-stage fan speed :thumbup1: A successful morning :)
