Wing Mirror Wiring - Oddity of the week!
Ok, a few weeks ago I posted that my wing mirror connections (plugs and sockets) were different. I was told that this was normal, the wing mirrors are from a later model. Lucky me. Both mirrors and car are JDM. The mirrors are heated folding type, the car is earlier spec and I don't think it supports heated mirrors (though can't confirm), as I have 2 pins less on the car side of the connector. So, I realised that the larger plug on the wing mirror side was the same as the car side, with the an extended 2 pin section (probably for heat). The old socket and the 'new' socket wiring colours and location are exactly the same. The only difference was a keyed bit - a little plastic lug in the middle, so I cut this out, and it connected fine, same colour and location as they were in the original connections, all colours lined up if this makes sense - NOTE - The connector on the left of the pic is from the original wing mirror loom, it isn't connected to anything. Just incase you're thinking 'why doesn't he connect the correct one!'. The old socket and the 'new' socket wiring colours and location are exactly the same. The only difference was a keyed bit - a little plastic lug in the middle, so I cut this out, and it connected fine, same colour and location as they were in the original connections, all colours lined up if this makes sense - The problem is, nothing happened, the fold/unfold switch does nothing, the mirror adjust does nothing. I got a multimeter out and checked what was happening at at the socket (car side obviously), this is what I discovered - NOTE - I'm not sure what's fold/unfold, as my switch is too badly worn and I can't remember which way unfolds/folds on the rocker switch. Also - no down adjust?! I've even used the original wing mirror connector (from the original door loom), connected it to the wing mirror side, and tried ALL the wires with the (car side) connector, but not a thing - I know the power is getting to the connection, but the wing mirrors don't do anything - no mirror adjust, no folding nothing - not a sign of anything on either mirror. I considered that the earth, or negative was on one of the 2 unconnected pins (mirror side), so I tried earthing these. Nothing... I tried an independent 12v (13v actually...) supply to the various mirror pins, expecting a motor to twitch or move...something.....but not one pin did anything on either mirror. So, what have I learnt - I know the power is getting to the connector plug (car side), I know the control hat/rocker switch is ok. Both mirrors used to work fine, though haven't been used in a number of years but have been in box in the shed dry and safe until painting recently. I can't believe that both mirrors have failed in both folding functions and mirror adjust, I mean what are the odds! My best theory is that the mirrors aren't earthed somehow, and so that's why nothings happening at all. The wing mirrors are currently attached to the car, so should be earthed through conact with the door? I can't open up the wing mirrors to see what's going on inside as the screw in the bottom wont come out, and just deforms if I put any pressure on them, they're not in a good way. The mirrors are just dead to the world. So...any help on this one would be most appreciated, as I'm at a total loss!

brand new Top gear on BBC 2 now...
It felt a little forced, especially the laughs, and lacked chemistry. I like Matt Leblanc but he seemed uncomfortable in the studio (wondering if this is still live). I did like the German girl though. Give it time I guess. I'm watching Top Gear Extra on BBC3 (online) which was meant to be behind the scenes stuff, but just seems like more Top Gear with unknown people.

Paint. Where did I go wrong.
You may want to see this - http://www.hotrod.com/how-to/paint-body/0901sr-help-with-troubleshooting-paint-problems/ I think the problem is Checking or Crazing, which pretty much comes down to applying too much paint before the coat beneath is dry. For me, I'm pretty sure it's only affecting the clear coat. It has spread to more panels....not great. apparently it can affect 1k and 2k alike.

Paint. Where did I go wrong.
Yeah, I just hope that's the end of it! It's the oddest thing, I mean they're deep ridges / scores, and seem to be in the clear coat. All I can think is that it got hot and expanded, and cracked.

Quick electrical queries - rear tail lights, fog lights, washers
Cheers, as long as it's normal. I was having all kinds of fun thanks to that little black box that controls the lights. Replaced it and all is well. As for the motors, I just find it hard to believe that both motors have died. I guess it's possible...I'll check next weekend with a multi meter.

Paint. Where did I go wrong.
I actually think I have the same, or very similar problem now - It was the same on the tailgate, which I've repainted. It's not happening on my left wing, and roof. These have been painted for a good couple of months. The only thing I can think it that the temperature has recently increased...other than that, all remains the same. Either way, it means I'm going to have to repaint. Gahh!

Quick electrical queries - rear tail lights, fog lights, washers
Hey, My Zed rebuild continues and I recently reattached the rear lights (not shiny new ones like I hoped or planned, they'll have to wait until later on...) Anyway, when I push my fog light button, my front fogs come on, but the rear tail lights also come on, is this normal? On a slightly separate note, my washer motors wont do anything. I haven't been able to test if its the actual motors as didn't have a multi meter with me, but they used to work three years ago, so for both to fail when sitting doing nothing seems unlikely. I just wondered if there's a relay or something that can fail? Fuses seem to be ok. Cheers!

My kingdom for a courier! (For a bumper)
Annoyingly all seemed fine based on size and weight. It was when I entered the description I discovered it was forbidden! Sent from my SM-N910F using Tapatalk

My kingdom for a courier! (For a bumper)
Thanks, I'll see what Anyvan come back with, then probably give them a try. It's a bit mad calling yourself carpartcouriers then refusing a whole bunch of car parts!!:lol:

My kingdom for a courier! (For a bumper)
That's pretty bad. It's just under £50 for a bumper. I'd like to know why ParcelForce forbid bumpers...

My kingdom for a courier! (For a bumper)
Hey, Has anyone used these - http://www.carpartcouriers.co.uk/acatalog/store.html#infolines Turns out it's surprisingly difficult to have a bumper couriered for less £100. Crazy. Anyway, I'm looking at Anyvan and the above. I hear Paisley Freight turned bad and now aren't in business.

Electric power seats - wiring advice please
Ohhhh of course!! :)

Electric power seats - wiring advice please
Cheers, looks like that's what I'll have to do. I am curious about what this little plug is for if not seat motors. Annoying thing is I could have cut the plug out of my old Zed before it was scrapped (due to serious rot), but obviously I didn't know.

Electric power seats - wiring advice please
Ok, so I have this plug coming from the passenger floor - But I have a fairly meaty connector on the passenger seat - The seat isn't heated (there were heated seat right?) but it is fully motorised. Normally I'd just cut the the plug off and 'hard-wire' it, with spade connectors. However, there are three thick wires on the seat side and only two thin wires on the car side, which is a bit odd. Oddly the drivers side is fine, big connector to big connector. The original seats (assuming they were original) only had a motorised 'power' seat on the drivers side. Given the thickness of the wires on the seat, I'm tempted to steal power from the drivers side, but wondered what peoples thoughts were?

Wheel arch splash guards - reinstall help
Thanks all! I spent far too long pondering this today; thinking that there were guards for the rear, and obviously having duplicate guards hasn't helped! Cheers!

Wheel arch splash guards - reinstall help
Cheers, I think I understand whats happened. I have an N/A, so now I'm thinking I have both N/A and TT splash guards. Yes, this would make sense I think. No wonder I'm confused! So wait, does that mean there isn't any splash guard in the rear arch?

Wheel arch splash guards - reinstall help
Ok, I found this - So maybe I've attached the wrong section to the front, where it goes from the arch to under the front bumber. I've used this -

Wheel arch splash guards - reinstall help
Ok, its been several years since I took these off, please can someone tell me if I've reinstalled them correctly? (I know I missing push clips, I'll need to by new ones) - Also, where do these go, I literally have no clue!? Cheers!

Paint. Where did I go wrong.
I had what looked like a cracking effect on my tailgate, but only showed after polishing with G3. I don't think it is cracking, but deep score marks from something that got onto the polishing mop...only way I can explain it, or when rubbing down with 2500/3000 grit. Either way it ruined the finish and I'm painting it again tomorrow, weather permitting. There is something therapeutic about spray painting though...or it's just me.

Paint. Where did I go wrong.
I'm not sure if this helps - http://www.hotrod.com/how-to/paint-body/1309-how-to-correct-most-common-painting-mistakes/ The thing is, from what you're saying it isn't immediate thing, it happens months later, which is just plain odd.

Paint. Where did I go wrong.
I just painted my whole car in cellulose, and I haven't seen anything like this. I think I'm going to agree that moisture is getting though the filter, or the surface wasn't clean.

Wing mirrors different with year?
Thanks, I don't have other door mirrors, just the original doors that the mirrors came from, so I can use the plugs from there. It's been such a long time since I took everything apart, it's so easy to forget where everything is and how to put it back on! lol
-
Wing mirrors different with year?
Haha, yes, that's a very good point! lol
-
Wing mirrors different with year?
Oh great.... So that's all it is? I mean, if I 'hard wire' it, all will be ok? Seems like a lot of wires to fold and unfold. I guess if I really wanted to I could take a wire from the rear window to heat the mirrors.

Base coat - no need for cutting compound?
Unless it's pouring down there will be wax tomorrow, followed by more polishing. Not sure about the bonnet, it still has orange peel effect, but I think this is in the paint not the the clear coat. An despite using 2500 then 3000 grit, I had score marks that seemed to stay after all the polishing, but you can only see these at certain angles. I think, overall, given that this was an amateur job, done very much in the elements, and on a budget, I should be more than happy. I am happy, I could be happier, but I'm not unhappy. I've learnt a lot, and although far from a pro, I think I've done damn good job.
