Detonation in 5th low revs...Normal?
who and where was/is that place in coventry then plz???....the others sound like cowboys. :xxx: I'm referring to Thor. I guess there must be somewhere nearer to you actually, since Peter Rosenburg at SE must use someone not too far away. (He has used T&M before - but he doesn't make a habit of it. Also, Pete would have been in the drivers seat, so no chance of him driving your engine through the rev band under det!) Maybe worth a call. Maybe even ask 'MAC1' to see where his car was setup? Hope this helps Simon.

Detonation in 5th low revs...Normal?
T&M in colchester is who you're thinking ok I think: http://www.t-m.co.uk/ Blackmagic: If you look in the dyno section - you'll see the run was performed there. HOWEVER.... the chap has no tuning equipment for our cars, AND, (and this is worst bit) he has no regard for det as I found out. I think the quote was "don't worry - it might stop in a minute!" - Cricky, once det has started, and you're still winding up the revs it gets worse very quickly! Anyway, that was just my experience; but I will say that in future I shall be taking the three hour drive to Coventry for some more professional expertise. Regards Simon.

wideband 02 sensor kit
Tis indeed interesting - especially if you've got aftermarket add-ons and want to keep your AFR in check. I think John Dixon was looking into making similar a while back? John?

Electrical experts, any truth in this?
Hi Timmy! (Sorry I know I'm not Paul!....) The ECU sends a lower voltage trigger signal to the required Power Transistor for the respective coil. This transistor allows the full 14.4v (or thereabouts) to flow to the coil, which will consume as much current as it requires - this stops any unwelcome power fluctuations in the ECU. When the coil signal stops, it will have a reverse voltage - usually much higher than 12v whcih will return down the same cable. The PTU in this case actually protects the circuitry in the ECU - as these voltage spikes are not good for IC's. If your spark plug isn't igniting properly, this return voltage is much higher since less of the energy has left the coil - possibly one of the reasons why some Z owners find green connectors on the PTU. This is of course similar to the injector connectors which are very prone to this green stuff - which is caused by high frequency high voltages in bad connections. (The magnetic field generated by the returning solenoid pin in the injector creates a low current but very high voltage) Anyway, I'll stop rambling now Simon

Carefully plan and monitor your drinking!
A "Tactical Chunder" - lmfao!!! :D

battery!
I've just bought a new battery for the Z - last one was left flat for 3 months and consequently died! UK spec battery is listed as a 088. (In both the Lucas and the ABS catalogue at least) Chunk, the 069 is the right size in all dimensions, but has the recessed terminals so no idea how the battery could be wired once inside the battery holder. (Without the holder/cover it would be ok however) Simon

Forum Names
lol i know :) Middle-name Benjamin which explains benjibunny Seamon - my mates younger sister finds it highly amusing to call me that at the moment And Simone - well this is a silly one - my mate Simone calls me that when she's drunk :) To be honest WillyEd's probably the best of a bad bunch!

Forum Names
Williams was obviously far too a common and sensible surname it seems. Between the ages of 4 and 28 the following have been the following (in order): BenjiBunny Willy Willybum Wilf WillyHead Seamon Simone Si ...but somehow WillyHead stuck, mainly due to the fact that I now work with some of the guys I went to college with. However I toned down WillyHead to WillyEd so I might be given some credibility on the forum - but alas, I'm not sure it's been entirely successful. :) Cheers :duffer: Si.

RIP John Peel
A real shame :( Driving home from work won't be quite the same: Death metal, then some deep drum n bass followed by something quite ambient - brilliant. On a different note - doesn't he look like Jack dee: http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/40457000/jpg/_40457063_peel203.jpg spooky

crank pulley bolt !!
If you remove the starter motor (2 minute job), and get someone to hold a screwdriver between the gearbox housing and the flywheel teeth - this'll definitely stop the crank from rotating when undoing the crank bolt. Hope this helps Simon.

Thick Question
My 91 UK model has the warning light too. Without I'd have been stuck many times ;-)

I have been looking at pointy stick
OMG - how dead would the driver of that car have been!!

Unorthodox Racing pulleys
The crank and water pump pulleys fit a treat - but the power steering and alternator ones are different - as I found out! Courtesy did do the 'courteous' thing though, and refunded me the payment on them. Don't worry about the damper / harmonic balancer business - you won't find anyone on any Z forum who's had a problem. If they have it because they didn't get the crank balanced after installing aftermarket pistons. HTH Si.

Faulty something..?
Hmm, not sure if removing it is the way to go, I'm pretty sure you can adjust the sensitivity in the ECU. Although a well trained ear will hear det, so perhaps removing it is ok for those who religiously use a premium fuel and know what the listen out for. Nissan have had to cater for everyone too - Lets face it, not a lot of people actually know what det sounds like! Lots on this board do - but thats just because we're all generally experiencing the same problems as our aging cars start to show their wrinkles. Si.

Faulty something..?
Hi Andy, I'll give it a go as I'll try anything to fix it. But in a way I hope it doesn't work - coz the knock sensor isn't even a year old yet  Hi John, somebody has offered my the loan of a conZult actually, so am keener than ever to take him up on his offer now. With regards to the wet, I don't know because I never floor it in the wet, BUT.. the car definitely runs a lot nicer when it is wet / foggy and even better when its cold AND wet - how ironic! Hello Jim mate! There is a good thing about you not having a Z yet - and thats because it means you're holding out for a good one, so stick with it. :)

Faulty something..?
Maybe worth changing the actual sender then too I guess - I've replaced just about everything else over the years :) The smoking at this particular roundabout is a bit of weird one actually - let me explain... To get to work in the mornings I drive 6 miles through a 30 limit with several sets of traiffic light and all manner of things to keep us driving slow. Nothing special there, but perhaps worth noting that the turbos have not yet had a chance to spool up yet (even though I've been driving 20 mins). Then I reach the end of the 30 limit, whereupon I'm at this particular roundabout which gets me onto the dual carriage way for my final .5 mile to work. So usually (like any Z driver) take full advantage of this new speed by planting the foot to the floor, then *smoke!* What do you reckon then - something to do with the fact that I'm spooling for the first time? Perhaps one turbo is spooling faster than the other and causing one side to run rich?? (Dual boost gauge and blocking the balance tube would detect this perhaps?) Si.

Faulty something..?
Hi low-zdr. I've recently replaced the coolant temp wiring, so hopefully not that. But your comments have got me thinking - perhaps fuel temp sender? Mmm, I reckon a ConZult will reveal all......
-
Faulty something..?
Every now and then.... and I mean perhaps less than once a week, I'll be accelerating out of a roundabout in third, when the car decides to really over fuel - *huge* cloud of black smoke that fills the view from the rear-view mirror. If I ease off the accelerator then reapply it then acts the car behaves normally, and full acceleration is then available. The ECU is showing up 55, so must be a dodgy MAF / wiring problem right? Duffer / JD .. any ideas?? Cheers Si. p.s Nismo 555's, no EGR, no AIV's, decat, Turbo Technics stage 2's, stock ECU with SE chip.

Body Jig?
Hi Mark, This may not be of much help given the distance between Ipswich and Aylesbury; but this company straighted my old Astra GTE several years ago. They specialise in jig-work: D.C Westwood Car Body Repairs Tel: 01449 722599 Unit 9, Lion Barn Depot,Lion Lane, Needham Market, Ipswich, Suffolk IP6 8NT Hope this helps Simon.

(Ipswich) Who checked out my z this arvo?
Other half phones me at work this arvo, saying a black zed has pulled up, having a look around the car? Anyone here? Drop me a line if its you - be nice to meet another Ipswich owner. (Only met two so far, TVC (David) and PowerLoad (Stu) - who doesn't really count anymore as he's defected to the TVR camp.) Si.

wheel bearing prices ??????
Hi JD, I have a brand new one, which I never used - because it's just not possible to remove without a press! I have the bearing, locking ring and one other thing that came with it (might be a shim or something) msg back here or Mail me if you're interested simon.b.williams (a t) talk21.com Cheers Si.

Billing Pic
:) lol - reckon I would too!! Although that may just make matters worse for the following year... who knows Bugger to have missed it. But like Cos, our first born arrive a few days before so had to pass. No such excuse for next year. I'll bring a spare wetsuit just in case I end up in the river, oops I mean lake.
