how many days off over christmas?
what you finished your period a week monday at least there will be less stress at xmas manta :D
-
full engine
sounds a reasonable price, but its all good and well saying you can hear it running you need to get a compression test carried out,and idealy check the state of the turbos when engine is out, check for any smoke rattles etc,but if all checks out then not a bad price at all

Top end rebiuld?
the only PITA is removing the egr from the plenum, thats about the only fiddly part, rest is straight forward if you have stripped the front of the engine before and you have a manual top tip if your replacing the lifters use a magnetic pickup tool to pull each lifter, that way you dont drip oil every where and you can drop all the old lifters straight in to a container, new lifters come in a sealed packet containing oil, keep lifter upright on removal then get them in

teething problems
you probably have a pre 92 z so they had the series 1 heater controls that annoyingly dont blow air in the direction you want,so it can seem like the heat is random, possibly a poor working thermostat, hence why your car takes a while to heat up oil changes religiously every 3k miles takes approx 20mins to do,use a good quality fully synthetic oil castrol rs 10-60 or 10-40w IMO
-
Reliable?
keep 2k aside, the turbos will fail with time, may be 500miles or 100,000 miles either way ;)
-
teething problems
the temp gauge could be faulty, the gauges in general are not that great
