  1. Yep. Performed normally for approx 2000 miles. You need to position yourself upside down in the drivers seat and you can see exactly where the adjusting nut is. Hope you get on OK.
  2. My money is on the PTU. Mine did exactly the same 6 months ago. Bloody thing would just stop for no apparent reason. Leave it for a while and it would start up fine - then stop 20 mins later. One day it went for a whole 60 miles before stopping. Put on a new PTU (£180 from the Z Centre) (make sure you get a series 2) and it has been fine since. I'm no mechanic, but this was dead easy to do. Took about 20 mins. I contacted the Z centre and they told me to splash some water (splash - not pour) over the PTU when the car stops - if it then starts, it's the PTU. It worked - PTU replaced. You may find that a diagnostic wont show the PTU fualt up as its intermittent. Hope this is of use.
  3. Faz I have a 92 N/A. Mine started playing up and (like some have suggested) adjusted the clutch internally. Got about another 2000 miles before she finally gave up the ghost. Would coast along nicely but as soon as you floored the pedal the engine would spin and very little happened. I was not interested in anything special and just wanted a bloody clutch to get my car on the road again. Challenger (which I believe are a nationwide group) fitted a 3 part clutch which cost me £350 all in. Has now done in excess of 5000 miles with no hassle - that said, they did put the prop shaf on 180 degrees out and she rumbled like a ******* when I first took off. Took it back and they changed it in 30 mins. As your in London I'm sure you could find a Z Specialist. I am down in deepest Cornwall but was still surprised to find most clutch fit centres would do the Z for around the 300-400 mark. Apparently they aren't that difficult - although bugger doing it yourself! Hope this helps.
  4. Ray At last the effort was there. Thanks for arranging this and hopefully better conditions will greet us next time. Shelton
  5. Tom, at 6'8" I reckon you will be pushed. I'm 6'4" (17 stone) and its a snug fit. Every time I get in and out of the car I wack those bloody control colums that stick out either side of the instrument cluster. That said, with the seat right back its fine once your in. Don't let me put you off - try one, there a bloody great car to drive.
  6. Agree with Houghtons. I'm 44 - no mods and pay £260 fully comp (agreed mileage of 5000). Jap Import N/A.
  7. Older than you I'm afraid. 44 with no mods. That said, I tried Houghtons after looking on this site and there were younger guys who were able to use them and get cheaper insurance. To many, the problem is not using it as a daily runner. Could be worth a try.
  8. I'm sure you are right Paul. However, my classic bike insurance covers for travel to work and I like to use my car to travel to work also. Above all, I was informing other members that Houghtons are obviously being sensible about this and providing you don't exceed your mileage limitation by using it on a regular basis, you can use it for travel to work. All you need to do is ask them.
  9. Guys (and gals) Just a bit of advice. Got my classic insurance through from Houghtons this week. 5000 miles limitation. Very happy with the price which was £260 fully comp. However, if any others have got this insurance it is worth checking both the certificate and schedule as they can differ. My Certificate stated "no use for business" (which is fair enough) but the schedule stated "no use for commuting to work". Although my car is not a daily drive I certainly use it to go to work now and again and see little point in having an insurance that would not cover for this purpose. Phoned Houghtons and they were very helpful and immediately offered to include "travel to work" for no extra charge. Sorted. Certainly worth others checking their certificate and schedule as we all know what insurance companies can be like when it comes to the dreaded payout.
  10. OK. 12 o'clock at Perranporth. Not exactly a massive turnout but at least it's a start. Never know, next time we may get four of us!
  11. Perranport or Pandoras - it doesnt worry me as both are pretty close to my house. 13th is fine, just let me know where we have decided.
  12. I'm obviously the silly old bugger here at 44. Mind you, sod being 21 again if its going to cost me two and half grand to insure the Z. I can do all my cars and motorbikes (Rocket 3 and ZX12R) for less than £850 fully comp all round -and thats with declaring my colostomy bag. Glad there is some advantage to getting old. 44. Jap Import NA. Sports exhaust. Fully Comp £260 with Houghtons. Limited to 5000 miles
  13. Speedy Just come off E Bay. Search under "300ZX". There is someone offering an exchange service for polishing the plenum but can't remember how much.
  14. Hi Herman Internals for me. Address PMd Cheers
  15. I didn't thank that the TT and NA would use different discs but sounds like you are having a bit of a mare. Good luck. Shelton PS. If your insurance is due try Houghtons. It has just cost me £260 fully comp. Agreed value but limited to 5000 miles per year. Bloody bargain.
  16. Hi there paid my subscription by Pay Pal today. No indication of what else to do or how to contact Herman Munster (sounds a pretty frightening chap so we probably have something in common) Details are as follows: User Name - Shelton Full Name - Shelton Grigg Address - Chapel Cottage Crothandy Redruth Cornwall TR16 5JN Many thanks
  17. Went to renew my insurance today (£375.00) with Direct Line (Axa Insurance). Thought I had better inform them that they had sent the renewal for a 300ZX Turbo when mine was a NA. This obviously set alarm bells ringing and the company came back with a "no insurance quote" - because it was an import. I obviously became a little pissed off with this as I clearly stated this when I took the policy out in the first place and it was one of the main things I checked before I bought an import. Anyway, to cut a long story short, insurance was not renewable with AXA and Direct Line could not offer me an alternative. I am 44, in the Royal Navy, have no convictions or accidents, live in deepest Cornwall (low insurance Post Code) and have 9 years Protected NCB. Viewers may therefore be interested in the following: Had several quotes but these were the cheapest. Adrian Flux - £495:00 (0870 069 2202) - Unlimited using my NCB Peter Best Classic Insurance (5000 miles) - £488 Houghton Classic Insurance (5000 miles) - £260.17 (01582 867763) Yes - £260 and considerably cheaper than my original insurance (for the wrong car) With the classic insurance for Houghton I have to join the 300ZX club but that was only a matter of time anyway. NCB doesnt count with classic insurance but it undoubtedly helps if you are a silly old bugger. To anyone viewing, this 300ZX site has been brilliant. Right from the start, before I even purchased a Z, it gave me all the info to go out and purchase the best car (and I certainly viewed some real dogs), helped me when my PTU packed up and, above all, everyone seems extremely willing to assist in anyway possible. Previous posts also gave mentioned to insurance and who club members had insured their cars with. It was this info that saved me a lot of dosh. A bloody big thankyou. Shelton Grigg
  18. Ray Let us know the details idc. Sister lives in Camborne so you may see me around. Saw the blue Z last night (big white strip up the bonnet - looks a bit like a Viper!) so that one is obviously in the area as well. Please note the new E mail address "sheltongrigg@yahoo.co.uk".
  19. If your really desperate and think it could be the PTU I can send you my old one. There was no problem with my car running on this PTU it would just cut out after about 5 miles.
  20. Mad maybe - but it bloody worked! Some commonsense was obviously required with this snippet of information. If your daft enough to throw a bucket of water over it then that's your look out. The idea is to cool the ******* down not drench it!
  21. This might be worth a try. When it starts to stutter, pour some cold water over the PTU. If it starts to run fine the PTU is on the way out. Had a similar problem with my car (although mine was stopping completely) and the Z centre gave me this tip. It worked. New PTU and its fine. Information might be a load of rubbish and not work at all. That said you have nothing to lose.
  22. Thanks for all your help and advice. Spoke with Luke in the Z Centre and he gave me some cracking advice. If the car stops pour some water on the PTU. If it starts immediately the PTU is at fault. It works. New PTU in place (series 2) and my car is running like a dream. Great site and great advice. Cheers Shelton
  23. Any location is fine by me. If there is any interest from just the other side of the Tamar Bridge we could always arrange to meet at somewhere like the Half Way House in the Glyn Valley or perhaps the Jamaica Inn. Victoria Inn just after the Goss Moor is another good location. All of these have good car parks where the cars are not going to get bashed by some Skoda driver. That said, you started this one Ray so I will follow your lead. Shelton
  24. Hi Ray Mine is not the blue one - but I have seen that one around also. I own a red N/A (almost standard) private plate XRX62. There is also another guy in the Newquay area who gave me his telephone number when I met him in a car park (about a month ago) but unfortunately I lost it. That makes four of us in a 25 mile radius. Being in the Navy I do travel through four lanes. That said, I always keep the windows closed and lock the doors. A good cornishman knows that Four Lanes is bandit country My car is U/S at the moment. I am hoping it is just the PTU that is on the way out. A new one (series 2 replacement from the Z centre) should be arriving Friday. Using my bike to go to and from Plymouth at the moment - its bloody cold and it ain't much fun. Fair wether biker I'm afraid. You can get me on 01209 821473. Give me a ring and we can arrange to meet. Shelton
  25. Found the bugger. Have cleaned the connectors and keeping my fingers crossed. Will let you know how I get on. Many thanks guys.
