1. Read on a few sites that the fuse might need upgrading. What value should the fuse be for the lights and where is it located? I thought these lights consumed less power, so why should they need upgrading?
2. Update. Both lights worked first time after work. However, just now I popped out for something and both lights didn't come on the first time! Tried again a few seconds later and they were fine. Could they be affected by damp?
3. I will check although never had an issue before. As these consume less power, the fuse shouldn't need upgrading, but you never know. Shamaz
4. Switched on my lights this morning (it was foggy and I needed an excuse) and the RHS light did not switch on! Tried a couple of times, waited a minute or so and then worked on the 3rd attempt. The LHS light was fine each time. Could there be a problem with the ballast? It is this same light which flickers from cold. Hoping they will both work tonight!
5. Thanks zx-eyes. It would be gr8 to have a section on the site with guides/tutorials/instructions etc. Apologies if there already is one.
6. No I didn't. Is that the panel with the Z badge? How much space is under there?
7. 5. Now insert the bulb in to the housing and secure as you would do a conventional bulb. Note that the bulb should fit perfectly so don't force it. 6. Now take your original rubber grommet and push through the 2 connectors from the new bulb. Be careful to not tear the rubber and/or damage the connectors. 7. Once through, fit the grommet back in to position as per usual. 8. The next step is to find a location for the ballast. I'm no expert and really struggled here. In the end, I placed the driver's side adjacent to the light and secured to a large wiring loom with a tie-wrap. Let me know if it's a bad idea! Photo below. The one on the passenger side was even more difficult and I managed to squeeze it in behind the light. Sorry, no photo. 9. Now make all of the connections between the ballast and bulb. 10. Next, you need to slot the spade connectors in to the slots in the original connector. Dan's instructions stated that the red wire should be inserted in to the top slt, with the black below that. I found that to be the case on one side, whilst on the other light the connection was reversed. No big deal to be honest but I originally thought that either the bulb had blown or the ballast was faulty, as I trusted the supplied instructions 100%. 11. If you wish, you can re-connect the negative terminal at this point to see if all is well. I did, and the result is below. The comparison is very revealing. I probably don't need to tell you which is which! 12. Next, disconnect power again and repeat all of the steps for the other side. The final result is below:
8. Finally got round to fitting mine yesterday. Thanks to Dan of DTA for his professional and friendly service and advice, as well as a very quick turnaround. Enjoy your holiday! Below are detailed instructions with photos and I hope that they are useful. In summary, very happy with the performance of the new lights although I think I have some adjustments to make! There is a slight flicker for the first 10 secs but then the lights settle down. I will discuss this with Dan when he returns. I also fitted some matching LEDs for the side lights which are covered under a separate thread I posted yesterday. I found the most difficult part of the installation to be the location and securing of the ballasts and spend a long time musing over this. Still not happy but let's see. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. The photo below shows what my lights looked like before the mod. 2. The kit that I ordered from DTA. I assume all kits are very similar in terms of the bits that you get as well as connections. 3. The first step is to disconnect the negative terminal of the battery. Next, twist anti-clockwise and remove the plastic ring around the light surround and pull back the power connector. Unclip the bulb and remove. Be careful not to touch the glass if you ever want to use the bulb again! The photos below show the housing with the bulb removed as well as the connector. 4. Next, unpack the new HID bulb. It is usually inside a casing. As ever,be careful not to touch the glass with your fingers. At this point, I would also highly recommend removing the rubber grommet that came with the kit, as you need to use the original grommet. Take care not to cut the wires!
9. Mine were 55W. Having researched on the web, it seems that they are more for the look than actual performance, however having now got HIDs, there is actually little comparison.
10. When I took out my old bulbs today to replace them with HIDs, I noticed that they were painted blue. Looking on the net, it seems that they too were filled with Xenon. That's probably why the light was whiteish! They were made by Bosch. What do you know about these, and how good are they? I have to say that although the HIDs are the real deal, my previous bulbs were not bad either and the light was white rather than yellow. Visibility was also good, and not what everyone else complains about.
11. Thanks. I thought all cars in the UK had to have lights that pointed slightly to the left, and vice versa in Europe. If that's true, shouldn't the Z have adjustment in the horizonal plane? I'm sure you're right but just wondered...
12. Side Lights - Instructions for replacing with LEDs - Part 2 6. Remove the 4 screws on the back and open up the housing. 7. The side light is in the black socket. Twist and pull this out, remove the bulb and replace it with the LED. 8. Put everything back together again in the reverse order. Do not forget to plug the harness in again! 9. Enjoy the new look. Definitely worth it. The photo below shows both my HIDs and the new LEDs, which when a sickly yellow, would have spoilt the look. Very up to date.
13. Taking the advice of Dan of DTA, I decided to replace my existing sidelight bulbs with LEDs to match the HIDs. Definitely a good mod and relatively simple. Below are instructions with photos and I hope that they are useful. Thanks to turbocraigy for his advice. --------------------------------------------------- 1. To get to the side light (which is actually at the front, integrated with the fog lamp), you first need to remove the indicators which are on the side! 2. Remove the 2 screws on the right hand side of the light. 3. Next, pull out the light and leave it hanging. 4. You will then see the rear of the side light secured to the bumber via 3 bolts. Remove these and also pull out the power harness. 5. The light will now simply slide out of the front. End of Part 1
14. What movements does that control, i.e. vertical plane? How are the other movements controlled?
15. Thanks Jimmer. Just in case the 'friendly test station' bloke faints at the sight of the Z, could you please tell me where the lights are adjusted so that I can tell him if he struggles. Thanks.
16. Now that I've driven the car with the HIDs, I'm sure I'm dazzling some drivers, and not for the right reasons! The lights are great and definitely very powerful, but is there a thread on here detailing exactly how to adjust headlights? I've had a trawl but can't seem to find anything. Photos would be a bonus.
17. Just done the first test drive. They seem to flicker for the first 5-10secs after starting, but then settle down. Do you think they will stay like this or get worse?
18. Just installed both HID lights and new LED side lights. Will post full detailed instructions later with photos but for now, the questions is, are the HIDs supposed to flicker? If yes, for how long, what causes it and how often does this happen? I say this because mine are flickering now and then!
19. A pic would be great. Thanks. BTW, I also ordered some LED side lights. I'll have a look tomorrow morning, but how do I get to those? Is it simple or elaborate?
20. My HID kit from DTA arrived today (thanks Dan) and assuming it's dry tomorrow, I'll be fitting it. The instructions look OK but pics would have been nice. I'll definitely be taking some tomorrow. Question : Where is the best place to put the ballasts and what should they be secured with?
