  1. Despite fitting a new centre bearing some months previous the owner of this zed was disappointed when the vibration returned, but when the vibration changed to knocking he new best to get it checked out. Knocking from under the transmission tunnel was enough of a clue where the problem lay but when removed the propshaft coupling condition was a horror photo, unfortunately not possible to show in the photo`s but you could almost part it completely, imagine at motorway speeds if that happened. Lesson here is to not ignore sounds like this, the owner had the presence of mind to not only stop using the car but transported it by trailer to us, the centre bearing had been installed correctly and it would seem the failure of the front shaft coupling to be a coincidence. Jeff TT
  2. There are two points low pressure and high pressure, both in same area you can fill from one if you must but really to do it correctly you need access to both so you can evacuate the system and pressure test and then vacuum the lines for 30 minutes or so. When refilling remember to add a few cc of mineral oil or the compressor bearings will not last very long. Jeff TT
  3. Nissan fitted rear speaker amplifier will have a Clarion sticker on it,disconnect and bin it, very low power anyway. Jeff TT
  4. The n/a pump uses a narrower belt, the n/a engine has a different lower pulley so as to be compatible with the narrow belt. The twin turbo pump has additional port for the rear steering ( hicas) so would be pointless on a zed without it It is possible to swap them around, just needs a little ingenuity. Jeff TT
  5. One very poorly turbo, no debris other than the bits of turbo so quite what cause the failure is uncertain, a complete rebuild of the turbo was required, no engine damage whatsoever so not as expensive as you would think to get sorted. Jeff TT
  6. Yes quite possible, but on the balance of things its more likely bad connections, always best to check the less expensive first eh:D Jeff
  7. Yes no worries, you have that worried zed owner look already, in most cases when things go wrong they are often small little repairs. See Saturday?? Jeff
  8. Cat light comes on when unburnt fuel gets in to the cat, this is caused by a misfire, so your poor running issue is connected to the cat light directly. Check all the coil packs for solid connection, and failing that check the connections to the ptu (power transister unit ) silver box with cooling fins on the left hand front of the engine, has two large connectors going to it. That should sort it. Jeff TT
  9. Bad news matey, as your zed is OBD1 ( ON BOARD DIAGNOSTIC 1 ) it has NO feature that brings the engine management light on. This means either a corrupted eprom ( chip ) or more likely the eprom socket has an issue, check for a a loose soldered joint, you will need to remove the ecu located under the passenger footwell and remove the lids carefully remove the sister board so access can be made to the eprom / carrier from both sides, check with a magnifying glass, any broken or loose joint need resoldering ( remove the eprom if socketed if not be real quick when doing soldering work as heat kills components, use a screwdriver as a heat sink. Hope that helps Jeff
  10. Steve your a mind reader:D when originally posting this thread I did it for information only hence no requirement to include names etc. I have since had the opportunity to speak with the both parties again and it transpires that such things as the side brackets were in fact already missing and the loose bolts had been torqued up, speculating why they subsequently came loose etc. will send us all crazy so as Steve correctly said lessons learnt all round. Jeff TT
  11. Cheers matey, top motor you have there. Jeff TT
  12. Yes agree with Mac and Dazkent concerning puplic hanging having felt this myself in the past a long time ago but this is a current issue, and was only to show how when it goes wrong how far reaching the problems can get, with no names to prevent the public hanging the thread serves as it was intended to.....just as a warning. Jeff tt
  13. You know you maybe not far from the truth there, if the job was done over a longer period than it should of these kind of mistakes can creep in, as I said the turbo intallation was done very well. Jeff TT
  14. No perhaps I did not make it clear, no one here just known here, public hanging is not fair I fully agree, but in this case there is no excuse and as I used the no names approach no hanging has taken place just warnings to maybe check over jobs of this nature, or ask the garage to show you the car before it is taken off the ramp. Jeff
  15. Yep spot on. Jeff TT
  16. Oh you beat me:rofl: Jeff
  17. Yes agree to a degree, spoke with the customer and he was cool and neither party has been named. Jeff TT
  18. Not for me to say here, can pm you if you wish. Jeff
  19. Well if the torque convertor had moved out of the gearbox anymore it would have leaked and yes a potential fire hazard. Tony will update you tomorrow about your leather. Jeff
  20. Yes it was lucky, could have caused a lot of damage, just replied to your pm too.:D Jeff
  21. Not promising BUT I might be able to help, have a few sets of odd ball caps do you have any close up pics of your wheels? pm or post here if you have and will take a look in the workshop tomorrow see if we can sort you out. Jeff TT
  22. I know, I know shocking. Jeff TT
  23. Slow reaction usually caused by the aux air valve needing a clean. Jeff TT
  24. Ok what we got here then, a zed with an odd sound from the engine area, some thought was big ends, some thought was little ends and some even thought VVT springs. Well non of the above, the car has just been treated to a pair of new turbo`s ( last month) but they are fine and fitted well and are not the problem, sadly cannot say the same about the workmanship on fitting the gearbox back to the engine Cut it short when the gearbox was refitted he did not refit the side brackets between the gearbox and engine so there was no lower fixings at all, the top 4 fixings were all loose and the gearbox had started to fall backwards!!! the flex plate was been twisted by the torque converter !! New side brackets 6 new bolts and all the others torqued up and all was well...lucky man. Oh and where had it been done....well I am dumbfounded to say by someone who professes to be a 300zx specialist and is known here, this is shocking in our view and I sincerely hope the customer complains about this shoddy work. As a side issue , the last photo shows the exhaust brackets missing on the gearbox, but even worse the hangers were jammed solid metal to metal which would cause noise and vibration. Jeff TT oH
