Zed horror stories
Cheap zeds do not exist, in the main paying a little more when purchasing one will often pay dividens later, having said that have seen the odd sub £2k ones that turn out to be a little gem, its part of owning a zed or any other performance car really, but we still all love them! Jeff TT

Mike from Zworld update
Yes your right, remember now, they advertised one zed as "serviced by Zedworld" but in reality they bought an oil filter from us!!! Little tinkers! Jeff

Midland MEET & RIDE
So following the very successful Zedworld bash (thanks for all who came) we thought it is time to look towards the forum regional meets. MEET & RIDE So what we are have in mind is “Meet and ride” days rather than meet in a pub car park, annoy the locals and landlord and bugger off freezing cold 5 hours later. So by Meet and Ride what we have in mind is a series of monthly meets where we will meet at a suitable designated point for the usual putting faces to names etc. and them say a 30 minute drive in a fun convoy (no racing) to a second pre-arranged location which is good for photo's etc., we will post up the pics of each meet and will do small prizes for a monthly pics vote after each meet. This formula should give a good mix of chat, drive and opportunities to show off your zed and maybe your car cleaning prowess, also by keeping the meets around 4 hours or so its less likely to kill a whole day off so keeping wife's, girlfriends, partners happy too. picnic snacks would be a good idea especially as it keeps the spends real too rather than pub grub. Ok I have located several meet points to try and cover the area equally, I have worked out many of the “ride” routes & pic location, I will post up these in the next week or so as soon as I have them in a nice format to put up here. So once all done I will post all the dates in one thread and will also post a reminder thread a week or so before each meet, will most likely not ask for names as that format is less likely to work on small regional meets, one point though is this is only going to work if you guys join in. Will keep you posted very soon. Jeff TT & Jamie TT

Brake failure
Have a zed in for some serious welding and upgrade work and one of the reasons we had to recover it from the owners home was due to brake failure. When it arrived we soon established the brake master cylinder was empty and the pedal went to the floor, so a quick top up and bleed at the abs unit just to give us some brakes to safely move the car about went ok except the front o/s calliper was jammed. So look at the picture below to see how bad a caliper can get when its seized solid, a real mess and although rebuilding is possible this zed is in for some big brake upgrade so we just fitted a good used one and bleed it out again and now we have brakes albeit temporary for moving purposes till the new big calipers arrive. From our experience the incident of caliper seizure is higher on the cast ones, the import alloy ones seem to not suffer the problem so much. Jeff TT

Boost / air leaks
Not an exact answer to that, if you have a big leak then the amount of air you will need to find it will be significantly more than a small slow leak. Its more about volume of air rather than pressure, by that I mean the air supplys capacity to keep up the supply of air as it leaks away. Of course in our workshop situation we have a large reserve tank on our compressor so have ample volume, having said that in a slow leak situation if excessive air was injected you will likely blow a pipe off such as a vacuum one that in general do not have securing clips on them so caution is required and equally a foot pump or a battery powered tyre inflation compressor is not going to be of use unless the leaks are very small. Boost / air leaks
Boost and air leaks are a way of life for zed owners and making sure that your engine is not drawing air or loosing boost is vitally important for correct engine performance and acceptable fuel economy. However sometimes the cause of leaks are self inflicted and one such mistake we see many times is pictured below and refers to the balancer bar. The bar has a bracket on the drivers side which sit on top and is secured by the same fixings that hold the balancer bar itself down. A common mistake is for the bracket to be fitted in-between the bar and the plenum rather than on top of the bar, the outcome of this is a substantial air / boot leak. This leak can effect both turbo and non turbo zeds and will lead to bad fuelling, a grumpy tickover ( my name for it) this also can cause failure to pass emissions testing at MOT time. The most common time for this mistake to be made is when the bar is removed to change the two rear spark plugs, and often we see this problem some months after they have been done which is testament to the zeds self learning ecu trying its best to calibrate and keep re-calibrating, even so high afm readings and odd O2 sensor readings will also be a clue to this particular problem but a non specialist garage will fail to spot this. Another common issue is the rubber hose that connects the balancer bar to the auxilary air valve, they can get real brittle over time and when the bar is moved whn the rear plugs are changed they can split. These issues are common and is one of the main reasons we do not advocate ecu upgraded by post or e-bay as chipping an engine with issues is a no, no. Jeff TT

Annoying insurance companies
Insurance companies really do take the biscuit sometimes, dealt with a customers request for a bronze replacement windscreen for an import zed. The owner had through their insurer been directed to the approved windscreen company for a replacement, unfortunately they only had blue glass in stock and wanted to fit that, but the owner rejected the idea in favour of the correct bronze glass. The windscreen company made enquiries about the correct screen from Nissan, best part of £800 and 4 weeks back order to boot!! but no bother a month wait to get the correct part is no biggy. However the windscreen company required authorisation for the more expensive windscreen ( blue ones are around £200) and this is the rub, the insurance company are refusing to pay for the correct part and are trying to force the owner to accept the incorrect coloured glass. Now when insuring a zed insurance companies in general charge more for imports due to “different parts” been fitted ?? now for my money to take the extra loading and then refuse to pay out for the “different parts” is akin to taking money by deception, wrong just wrong, I have advised to hold tight and insist on the correct glass...what do you think? Who is Mike at Z World?
Ok guys have watched with some amusment at this thread, we see many zeds advertised as been looked after by us and often this is the case but there is a small amount of ads we have seen in the past where they have just bought parts off us only which in reality is not been looked after by us and some which have never been to us at all! This advert is a puzzle, the work such as the head works etc is not work we ever choose to do? the zworld feature is odd as we do not have any form of publication? and we never have had anyone called Mike work for is? so its a mystery what is going on here. Maybe the seller is somewhat confused and it was actually done by another specialist in the past and now got the name confused?? we always keep records of any zeds we work on and always give detailed receipts, in that case there should be a file full of them with the car, I see there is no mention of this. All very odd? Jeff TT

New tools are so cool!
Is it a man thing or what but when ever the Mac Tools van or the Snap on tools van calls its we turn into kids in a swet shop? today a new member of the team arrived.......the hydraulic spring compressor below. So it was unpacked and assembled and just had to be tested with an old shock and spring unit, and jeez why the hell we did not get one sooner I don`t know! it`s so easy. Just need some springs to compress now!! Jeff TT

Repaints and leaky targa`s
Repaints and targa leaks Leaking targa`s can be an issue for any zed owner due to wear and tear but paying for a leak to be caused is another thing entirely. Any decent repaint requires the door seals to be removed and in many cases the seals are not correctly fitted or sealed down as they would of been originally, but correcting this is quite simple. So if you find yourself with leaking targa`s especially after a repaint then check the area`s in the first couple of pictures, the door seal runs from the lower front of the door opening up and around the targa area in one piece, and in most areas is just clipped, however as it passes close to the targa drain holes the seal needs to be firmly fixed down or rainwater will creep under it and from there can get inside the door opening. see pics 2 and 4 Pulling the seal up by the targa drain as in picture 3 and 5 you will soon see if it needs refixing down correctly....this is a simple job and as shown in pic 6 and 7 its a case of squeezing some clear silicon sealant under the seal, of course this is after cleaning the area and making sure its clean and dry. Push the seal down and wipe away any surplus sealant as shown in pic 8, and then once all done refit the targa and clip down, (pic 9) this will keep everything in place whilst the silicon cures, leave at least overnight to be sure all has sealed down. One other point after the seal have been completely removed for a repaint is to check the seal is firmly located in the A post strip as shown in pic 10 Of course the condition of the seal in general cannot be overlooked and sometimes there is no alternative but to fit new ones but at £80+ each side its got to be worth trying the sealant first. Note the pictures are of a breaker for illustration only. Jeff TT PS Cheers Smithy for the suggestion for this thread Front targa seal section Rear targa section Sealant fixing Targa refitted

oil pressur gauge
All that is required is a new oil sender in the engine, a 5 minute job to change, a bit dear from Nissan around £100 but will sort the problem, if your buyer is only concerned about that, ask him if he wants to call us at the workshop will be more than happy to explain it to him, should calm his worries then. Ebay prices
As a used parts trader here and a full time business in zed used parts I am amazed that often the prices on e-bay are dearer than ours and we have to warranty our parts, in fact sometimes even members here post parts dearer than us which dumbfounds me sometimes, a bit of competition is always good but ebay has caused many companies to either join in or fail...saying that when I want something for my BMW you know where I look first!!
