Mis-matched clutches.... tech thread
When choosing a clutch you need to ensure your covering the performance requirements, your driving style and cost of course, however cost can sometime get in the way of making clear decisions, information, research and recommendations are the way forward. We all like a bargain but you need to be careful that any clutch you buy is matched so that all of the components work together as one unit. Below are the results of a mismatched clutch, removed today in the workshop from a zed with little in the way of drive when under power but amazingly what appeared to be complete drive at lower speeds. The 4 puck clutch plate has very hard ceramic splinter pads that accordingly should hold more than enough ftlb of torque for this zed BUT the flywheel and cover plate are totally standard, the result is that the ceramic pads have literally eaten into both the flywheel and the cover! the plate pads are not far off new thickness but do have some damage from the heat of the metal grinding thats been taking place. No alterative now, this zed now needs a new flywheel and a matched clutch unit as well as a clean up in the bell housing that looks like an engineering factory waste bin! Be careful as some units sold on auction sites seem to be NOT matched, the price will often look attractive but can represent bad value. Jeff TT

Car let me down today
Sounds like something simple, and very unlikely the fuel pump, check around the engine for the frequent bad connection issues such as Temp Sensor, PTU, CAS Unit etc. also may have just flooded. So try removing the fuel pump fuse, ( fuse by brake master cylinder) turn the engine over with foot flat down on the throttle, keep the engine turning for 5 to 8 second, pause and do the same again, try this 3 times and then turn the ignition off. Replace the fuse and then restart keep your foot of the throttle until it starts. Keep us updated matey. Jeff TT

300zx parts trading 2012
Good afternoon everyone this is Jeff's wife Lynda having her say on the post.(You all know me I do not do this very often) I think a lot of you have miss read the post, we are traders on this forum therefore pay a lot more in fees £100.00. this is not a problem, but when you can clearly see someone selling parts time after time and only paying a members subscription £15.00 I bet you would be thinking hang on this is not fair. Yes I do understand the current market people find themselves in and everyone one wants to make a few extra pennies, okay but those people and you know who you are should pay the extra fees, if you continue to advertise just had another breaker in, as you said Jim if someone has posted this more than once with another breaker then this should be looked into. Also don't even get me started on the web site, we paid a lot of money to a customer to update this and guess what he did a runner never to be heard of again, (but we kept quiet about that one, so yes when Jeff has more time he will update the web site) Jeff, Jamie and myself are very passionate about the 300zx and we try to help people as much as we can, we often give people parts for free to help them out, and when another trader has ripped people off in the past we have stepped in to help with parts FOC. This forum is a great site where owners can get help and advice, especially from my husband who when he gets in from work you will often see him answering questions and also putting up technical threads to help people out. We work hard to make our business work, and unless I’m mistaken I thought on here if one trader is advertising parts for sale they will not allow another trader to advertise the similar parts. Maybe I should have not posted this but I wanted to have my say on things, I sincerely hope this does not make matters worse, but as I said I felt we needed to clear a few things up. A lot of you know me and know I’m a straight talker and tell it as exactly as it is. So good to get that of me chest ..... oh that does feel better. Lynda The long suffering wife of Jeff TT (who watches him nodding of every night whilst he is trying to write a post ,yes this is the reason why he takes a long time to answer your questions he is going to kill me for saying that)

300zx parts trading 2012
There has been over the years a growth of dedicated trade and non trade supply of used zed parts been sold in the main by ebay traders. As is often the case the actual success of ebay has also seen the thinning out of trade there as more and more vie for the decreasing number of buyers for zed parts, the decreasing numbers has many reasons and in no small way due to the many zeds been broken, supplying the market with an almost glut of parts. We have been in this market for over 10 years, as a business we did not use ebay as a portal for our parts sales, in part because we did not need to and partly because we have our own trader section here at the very heart of the zed community. But,the past 12 months or so has seen a steady rise in parts sales here from what we shall call domestic parts suppliers, now in as far as someone breaking their own zed or for a mate that`s cool but if a club member is buying breakers for the reason of breaking that`s trading, simple no arguement it`s trading, again nothing wrong with that provided its declared and forum fees paid. This is exactly what auction sites like Ebay excell at and providing the seller is honest and registers as a business all should be fine. What does happen though is many do not, but seem to be able to openly trade as a business with non business accounts? I have asked this more than once of ebay why this is allowed to continue as its against their own rules, their reply is always the same, they cannot monitior the vast amount of accounts looking for trading stats... yes right they can monitor it enough to send sellers fee`s?? So back to the forum, whilst we are happy to not only pay our traders fees but to adhere to the forums rules on selling it has become increasing clear of late that some of the ebay traders and traders from other zed sites have surreptitiously began trading here. Now you will understand why over the past year or so most of our own parts trading is mainly done off the forum. Prices are another contentious subject, I am surprised to see that often "domestic breakers" are selling parts at higher prices than ourselves, which is frankly just nuts, no warranties, no come back as they are not declared traders and as is often the case very slow deliveries and sometimes no shows. In all I am disapointed, I spend a great deal of my "not at work time" here in the past this was a mixture of banter, answering tech questions and of course promoting parts sales, supplying a good quality service along with a good quality part is key to our business and should be the focus any seller has, but if that seller has another full time job then its to be expected the service may not always be exact, but this is where the actual value for money for members is lost, bad service can be just as bad as bad parts. No offence to anyone who is suppling parts in this manner but business investment goes a lot further than buying a breaker off ebay, a tape gun some brown paper and an occasional walk to the post office, it takes time, dedication and hard cash to build, insure and pay tax on, which of course I am sure your all doing.......right? Is there likely to be a committe review at any time on trading in the near future? I honestly think it needs a revue if the current situation does not change. Jeff TT

Speed sensor
You will need a non turbo manual sensor as your non turbo diff is a different ration, the auto and manual sensors are very different, the manual one been much longer, manual ones can be hard to find used as most people keep manual gearboxes intact, and are expensive new (around £120+ ) I can do you a swap for a non turbo manual sensor for your twin turbo manual sensor if you want. Non turbo clutch will work fine whether you fit a non turbo or twin turbo flywheel. Jeff TT

Yes no problem. Jeff

help
Unless it was a mistake and was meaning the engine ecu, you said gearbox ecu, there is no ecu for the manual gearbox, as far as the engine ecu no need to change it, just make sure you connect the neutral switch to make timing settings easier. Jeff TT

power steering
Most likely a coincidence, however there is a small solenoid on the end of the steering rack ( drivers side ) there is connector on the cable that is quite prone to the elements, try cleaning this out with some WD40 or similar, a bad connection here will cause the exact symptoms you have, unfortunately so will a dodgy speedo, delimiter, speedo sensor/ cable / connection. electrical harness for the horn and other
No need to take the wing off, much easier to take the fuse box out, see the link in my previous post. Yes the horn cable comes from the steering column to the relay under the bonnet. The horn cable is an earth return not a power cable, if you have a cable issue between the steering wheel and the relay which I have dealt with several times the easiest option is to just pull a new cable through rather than waste time looking for the fault. Auto Gearbox problem still
Just to let you know, Voddy had a very particular problem, he was missing a very important part, a working one of these...:D Jeff TT

1991 Gearbox problem
There are a few electrical issues that can effect some of the gear selection process however when the gearbox begins to fail the usual order is the overdive first and then third drive gear and eventually non, so it would appear to be the gearbox, autobox rebuilds can be expensive at least £1k and sometimes much more, a good warranted box however is so much less even with fitting. Good news though its a simple proceedure ( NO ENGINE OUT ) especially on a 2 post ramp and should take no longer than 4 hours to replace, add a new fluid cooler at the same time for good measure. Is my ECU standard?
Hi, we did do a search on our data base and our hard copy workshop day sheets and could not find anything relating to the car, maybe it was a casual check or maybe at JAE? If we did have the ConZult on it we would have read the ecu mapping, you cannot be sure either way as we have seen standard chips that have been cleared and re-flashed and then soldered back, a stealth approach for Jap road cars or insurance reasons, reading the mapping is the only way to know. electrical harness for the horn and other
1 The horn cable connector is located on the steering colomn half way down on the silver bracket 2 Due to multi fit looms and option differences there is sometimes spare plugs 3 The targa pipe is behind the fuse box, this needs removing to get access, link to how to thread with pics here: http://www.300zx.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=146736&highlight=targa+pipes Jeff

Insurance
Be careful it has not been rated as a Z31 it is very common for this to happen on 89 models as there was a changeover that year. When I had my first zed over 10 years ago this happened to me, lucky no claim issue it got picked up on the renewal the following year. From there on I insisted the policy showed it to be a Z32 300zx,last year paid a little over 6k for our traders policy which is a lot of cash but covers us, customers and all of our own cars so with my zed tagged on my trader policy I do not feel it any more, I do feel for you guys about these big insurance quotes though. Sub frame corrossion
The wayward rear end of this particular zed caught the owners attention and he knew something was wrong. The very corroded subframe was removed as can be seen by the pictures the o/s lower suspension arm was not connected anymore to the subframe at the rear most fixing point. The level of corrossion was sever on the whole assembly, so it was concidered the most effective repair was to change the lot wholesale, not a particular tricky job ( with ramps etc ) but a bit long winded. A suitable donor was removed from a breaker and once fitted all was as it should be. Jeff TT

consult
Easy cas test is to remove it and whilst still plugged in and the ignition on spin the shaft, the fuel pump should run and the injectors click away. Jeff TT
