Hello! A few questions from a newbie.
Hi Scortboy Welcome to the forum :) You will have trouble with "regular" wheel retailers for the ZX as there aren't many manufacturers who supply wheels either wide enough or with the correct offset owing to the large clearance needed for the brakes. If you like Azev wheels (see my car in "my rides" section) then contact Dave at DT motorsport They are the UK importers of Azevs and will sell them to you at the same price he sells to other retailers so you get a good deal. http://www.dtmotorsport.co.uk Otherwise try Wheelmania in Birmingham as they have some decent designs for the ZX too. For tyre sizes on 18s 265/35/18 rear and 235/40/18 front are probably best combo. Any wider than 235 on the front will affect the steering and the car will tramline badly. Those sizes will fill the arches nicely without the need to lower the car - I have 17s on standard suspension and the car doesn't really need lowering. Imports do not have adjustable shocks, only the UK cars do and on the rears only. Lowering the car will have an effect on wheel camber and accentuate tyre wear on the inside edge. There was an article on buying a ZX in Japanese Performance (nov 1992 IIRC) where a couple of experts (eg Mike Feeney - a trader here) on the Zx said it is best not to fit lowering springs. Although some members have done (maybe with help of camber correction kits) and could advise you better on this. The best bit of advice I will give, is once you have your car enjoy it - you wont be dissapointed  .....Oh and send Ajay a cheque for £20 to subscribe to the club  Money well spent IMO as this site will save you time and money aplenty, should you have any problems with your car. Turning a blind eye to the odd member "testing out their car" wouldn't go amiss either, officer  ;) Richard :)

Waranties...
Hi all I've just called WHA and they told me the administrators had re-arranged cover with another insurance company so existing policy holders have nothing to worry about...... I'll believe that if I have to claim again  As for your claim limit, FairladyZ, it doesn't cost much more to have "value of the car" limits per claim. Mine was just that. ;) Richard :smw:

derestrictors
As far as I know, UK cars are restricted to 155 and Jap ones to 112. Therefore when you remove the 112 restriction on a jap ZX it is not limited at all...... I'm sure someone will confirm this. Richard

Waranties...
At the minute, Warranty Holdings are only in administration. They haven't yet gone bust. However, whether any claims will be met is yet to be seen. I posted a thread on this back in Feb as a warning to others too. Jeff at z world replied, saying he had several claims which WHA had already authorised where the money was owed to him as a repairer, but he was still chasing the money and may never see it....... The problem IIRC was that the insurers behind WHA pulled out of the warranty business. But as will all insurance I believe someone has to step in and take over provision of cover. Mike Woolley BTW (trading as Private Car Warranties), supplied my warranty last June for 15 months (at £375 IIRC) with..........Warranty Holdings :( You need to check who he is using now before you part with your cash. Still, on the upside I have made almost 3 times that back with a couple of successful claims :) Richard

Quick question
I can't remember, think they're 180w too but JBLs are probably better quality speakers  Did you keep your stock rear amp wired in? I replaced my head unit with a JVC 4x50w and kept the stock amp. I now have to switch the fader more biased to the fronts as the rears are fekking loud :) They do sound good, though - way better than stock. As Stuart said I'm not a loud thumping music person either so this is a top upgrade for not a lot of cash or effort  Richard :)
-
What do you guys think of my new wheels?
Yup, Looks class mate  Maybe I'm a little biased too coz I've got the A's but Azevs are top alloys and the classic design really siuts the Zed  Richard :smw:

What are you?
A monumental sex god who likes to explore hot bitches  Close enough  (Just don't tell the wife :x: )

Yay passed MOT!
Certainly not from a dealer in the midlands, as even more warnings here point out...... Having said that, I travelled all the way to a dealer in Tamworth to buy mine...... :x: (Doh !!) Congrats on the MOT pass, Pete. Mine passed without a glitch back in March  . Here's to the next one...... Richard :)

how much should a full service cost?
IMO Nissan service history now means FA.....after all most of our cars are 10 years old+ As long as it's serviced at correct intervals by someone who knows what they are doing I would not be put off. My Zed had full Nissan history when I bought it last year, but do I go there now?......... No fekking way!! My local garage does a better job for half the labour cost and uses Nissan parts. He stamps the book and my warranty company are happy too :) Richard :smw:

cost of front fogs
Hi Mickey Jeff at z world has 2nd hand ones listed on his site at £25 each..........if he has any in stock, which is unlikely (but you never know.....). I got fed up waiting (and Jeff, Mike Feeney etc said 2nd hand ones in good nick are v.rare :( ) so I got new ones from Courtesy in the end. Cost me about £120 after carriage & duty, but being US spec, I had to get corner lights with indicators/side lights combined as the US ones don't have sidelights within. HTH Richard :)

Import or UK
I'd guess all of them.......   Richard :p

help
Funny but it really helps to change companies sometimes. I was with Houghtons for 3 years with my Supra. When I first thought of buying a ZX they quoted me an extra £20 (1 month into new premium). Then I bought my Zed 6 months later they wanted an extra £58 FFS ??? So at renewal houghtons wanted almost £600, Bell offered a good policy for £472 which I took up. Houghtons have since lowered their price so I will probably go back to them in October. Richard :)

Service, timing belt ect..
Seconded  I knew very little about these cars when I got mine. I had the cambelt changed at 64000 as soon as I got it, then 3 months later the water pump and 2 poncy little front water hoses went. Lesson learned :slap: Luckily my warranty co picked up the bill :D As Andyduff mentioned, it is probably worth changing belt tensioner too. Had mine done with the cambelt on the advice of my mechanic - IIRC Nissan charged £200-ish for the part, the :xxx: Welcome to ZX ownership Richard :)

Import or UK
A good theory, indeed b19rks. I just read my "300ZX enthusiast's companion" and when first sold the UK price was £34000 but only £17500 in Japan  The UK cars were also sold in fewer numbers to remain exclusive. According to the Jap Performance buyers guide the other year there are more imports registered at DVLA than original UK ones. The rust problem for UK cars is down to the salt on our roads in winter, so a non-rusty UK car (and there are still some well-kept examples) will rust no more than an import if subjected to the same use from now on. So if it's not rusty, top up the underseal...... Richard :) PS...... Mines a UK car with no rust, just done 70k miles with full history

Anyone know owt about Jags?
Hi B19rks The XJ series only came with the straight 6 AJ6 engine, then the new V8. (Only the older models had the V12 and the V6 is found in the S type or newer XJ6s) If the budget won't stretch to an XJR V8 (supercharged) you can still get a decent older XJR straight 6 supercharged for a good price and they are still fekking fast - almost as quick as a ZX with 0-60 in 5.7, 0-100 in 15.1 top of 153 The V8 XJ8 engine was (until the new 4.2 just out) 290bhp IIRC and they are still no slouch despite the weight. I'd still go for the XJR-6 over the non supercharged V8, though. Richard :)

Gah - First blast and I get trounced.
If you've got the driving skills (like, say, Sir Tiff  ) then you could make those old porkers move round the twisties too...... I checked my car bible, the 3.3 tubby does 0-60 in 4.7 and 0-100 in 11.4  Damn fast for an old-un so don't feel bad about being done by it  Richard :)

Penalty points- How many have you got?
Clean for me too  I did get 3 points back in 1992 for an average of 99.7 over a measured 1/2 mile on the M11 in Essex. The copper was trying his new toy - a video equipped unmarked Senator 3.0 24v. I saw him and guessed it was an unmarked piglet car but I slowed down too late :( Fair play to him, though. He said (showing me the vid) ".....there's you appearing over that hill at 118mph......and braking when you saw me. I should do you for over 100, but I'll take your average and you'll just get a fixed penalty..." Richard

Gah - First blast and I get trounced.
If it had wide rear arches and a whale-tail spoiler it would be the 3.3 turbo. They certainly do move  Pig to drive, though. I assume the roads were dry then coz the rear end on those slips easier than a ZX  Richard ;)

help
Hi rsgill, That's with Bell Direct. However I have a UK car and I'm 34, I also live in a low crime area. There are a few companies who offered me cover for similar amounts - Houghtons (recommended by a lot here), Lifesure, Adrian Flux etc. I chose Bell in the end as they included my wife (28 years old) at no extra cost. Richard ;)

Quick question
JBL do 6x4 2 ways - £49 from Halfords and they are good  Direct replacement - they just screw in like the stock ones :D Richard :smw:

brakes
Mine has just started to do this too........ I was giving the car a good booting at 140-150 (private road officer :x: ) a couple of weeks ago and left it a bit too late for a roundabout :o Had to brake very hard as there was a car already in it. Loads of smoke fom the pads :D Zed stopped no problem, but the dreaded judder has developed over the last week :( I'll get onto Mike Feeney for a set of Stillen discs, methinks ;) Richard

Last night
Congrats, mate..... don't know which is more expensive to keep, the ZX or the wife :x: (Still, at least I can send the wife out to work........helps pay for the :duffer: ) Bad show with the wheel, though :( Give http://www.wickedwheels.co.uk a shout to see what they can do. I was unlucky enough to get a burst tyre last year as I was changing lanes at 70. I caught a cats-eye on the flat and dented a brand new Azev rim beyond repair. I waited 3 weeks for a new one from Germany, when only the other week I was driving at 20 on a narrow-ish lane when some dozy fekkin bint in an oversize 4x4 came round the corner on my side of the road. I swerved towards the curb, only to clip the new rear n/s rim on a sticking-out curb stone and scratched it  I may bother to fix it......... All the best Richard :)

Thin, paint-on rubber sealant
Why not try silicone rubber lubricant spray. Rather than add substance to the rubber seals it simply rejuvinates the rubber and helps shrunken rubber re-expand to restore its sealing properties. It also stops creaks and squeeks too.... Costs about £3 in Halfords for a can Richard :)

Imports...
Hi Ben You returning to ZX ownership then? It's obviously too addictive and you have withdrawal symptoms  If you're lucky, some insurers won't charge more for an import. IIRC Houghtons don't - they didn't on my Supra. Like you say it's the same car but insurers are greedy fekkers and make the rules up as they go along  Richard :) ps still enjoying the book

help
Hi mate, As Alex said, 7.1 is for the N/A. A tt will hit 60 in 5.6 and onto 100 in just over 14.......most hot hatches struggle to do that in 20 :) As for reliability, these are essentially reliable cars - typical Nissan over-engineering. However you must accept that these are complex supercars which at best are 10 years old. And more like 14 years old if you are looking at spending 5K. Yes, it does scare you when you read some of the threads here but it is generally the heavily modified ZXs that suffer more problems. Most things are minor problems specific to these cars and most of us here know how to solve them cheaply and easily - we've all been there  Take your time and get a good one and you'll not be dissapointed. The power of the TT is addictive - bugg*r the fuel bills, if you want economy buy a diesel VW !! I use mine as a daily driver and average around 18mpg. I have had 24mpg on a long m/way run at a steady 90. Oh, and I pay £472 for f/comp insurance on a regular everyday unrestricted policy - my only mods are Azev wheels and an induction air filter kit. Richard :)
