  1. Back in 1989, 16 inch wheels were pretty big by then contemporary standards. Most family saloons ran 13 inch rims, with the sportier versions on 14s. The Escort RS Turbo ran on 15s, which was very rare for non-supercars. The Porsche 928s4 ran on 16s with the same tyre sizes as a stock UK 300zx. Similarly the 911 turbo also had 16s, whilst lesser 911s could be seen on 15s. Plus 16 inch tyres were a lot more expensive than today as they were state of the art for performance cars. To put it into perspective, I remember paying almost £90 each for 195/60/14 tyres for my Cav SRi back in 1989  The suspension of the ZX would have been set for the tyre flex and characteristics of the stock tyres. However I think that upgrading to 17s doesn't compromise the stock settings and adds a little more precision to the steering and handling. Richard :smw:
  2. I don't know exactly on the J-spec (mine's a UK), but I believe it is small and built into the radiator? Then there is an engine oil cooler somewhere in front of it. The UK spec has a separate, bigger 'box oil cooler. I think the conversion kit consists of a bigger engine oil cooler, so you then use the old engine oil cooler for the gearbox oil. I'm sure someone techy will correct me if I'm wrong. It may be hotter in Japan, but they do not drive their cars as hard or over the long distances we are used to here. Hence the need for less cooling there. Richard :smw:
  3. Tis indeed the correct pronounciation! "Scon" is more likely a regional dialect (probably from the north ;) ) that has become entwined in every day language. As for the breakfast one - yes the word does mean to break one's fast (ie first meal after fasting) but in English is has come to be pronounced "brekfast" over the years as it just rolls (not scones) easier off the tongue :p Richard :D
  4. Many Zeds are autos - must be because it is a fast GT car (in the DB7/XK8 style) rather than an out and out sports car. As such, Nissan have gone a long way to ensure performance should not suffer by fitting an auto box. Therefore it is a good 'box and it works well with the twin turbo engine. Providing the 'box is in good condition, kick-down is fast and instant. The mid-range overtaking ability is superb and whilst the manual may be slightly quicker 0-60 (but we are only talking a tenth or two), the auto is supposedly quicker 0-100. But again the margin is small. The manual is more the driver's car (of course) and feels like it has more urgency about it, whilst the auto doesn't feel as quick it is. The speed builds up smoother, that's all - look at your speedo and in the rear view mirror and you'll be pleasantly surprised! If you are buying a japanese import, be sure to fit the UK spec oil cooler upgrade otherwise you will cook the 'box. As long as it's been looked after and given an oil change as required it will be fine. Richard :D
  5. We all have different taste so please don't knock Scoops just because his is bad ;) However good they were though, when I play either of their CDs, they are never quite as good as I remember so Scoops may have a bit of a point :nono: Richard :smw:
  6. Jeremy Clarkson by miles.......... ;) I've just finished reading his new book and it had me pissing myself  Top Gear would be as crap as 5th Gear without him. Richard :D
  7. Sums it up for me too. Plus no other car I've ever owned could be described as "having a soul"........ .....albeit one owned by the Devil ;) Richard :D
  8. I was going to say that there is nothing I don't like about mine...... ....until Si came up with the crappy sounding horn. It's just so gay for a hairy chested muscle-car  Richard ;)
  9. Nice one James - and welcome to the club. I've seen that on Auto Trader for a while now and hoped someone would snap it up. Did you get them down much on the price in the end? I thought it was priced as a decent ZX should be, but sadly there are too many crap around knocking down the price of decent examples like yours. Good luck with it. Richard :smw:
  10. I think it's a thing with Golf GTi drivers, Gio............. .......anyone noticed how GTi is an anagram of GIT ;) Richard :mac1:
  11. Turn it into a WOK  Feck all on TV, even if you have 50000 chanels ;) Richard :mac1:
  12. I do lke the new SLK AMG too. Althought the 350 version is a fine car at a fraction of the cost - it's fast enough too with 280bhp it can compete with a 350z only with more class. I'd have one.......... I have an old shape SLK 230k as a daily driver and it is actually quite a nice car. Good build quality, more class than a Boxster, reasonably quick and you just gotta love that vario-roof ;) No Hairdresser jokes though, please chaps :D Richard
  13. Looks a nice one. I have a bit of a soft spot for late 80s/early 90s Porsches myself. Many's the time I've thought about replacing the ZX with a 928GT or GTS :slap: They are still holding their value too....... I do like the 944 too, although I thought they had power steering? the couple I have drived both did  Good luck with it Caz. Richard :smw:
  14. If I cared about fuel economy I'd have bought a Golf TDi ;) sorry, not helping really am I? :slap: Richard :o

Unless you have the convertible (which was N/A only from the factory) then don't bother. It can be done - Topless did with his convertible but if you have a targa or slick-top then just sell it and buy a twin turbo. It's not worth the conversion cost and the car will not be worth any more for it. Richard :smw:
  16. It does look a nice straight UK spec car, which is getting pretty rare now. That's been on Auto Trader for a good couple of months now though so in with an offer of £4500-5000. They'd do well to achieve the advertised price. Also, looking at the other cars they have for sale, they could probably do with selling the ZX at a loss to make space for a much more expensive/profitable car........Take a chance and go for it. Richard ;)
  17. Thanks for that offer Tony! Luckily a mate at work taped it properly......she lent it to me yesterday ;) Cheers, Richard :smw:
  18. "Aitch" is correct. There is no "H" sound at the start. Which is ironic since most people from London or the Thames Estuary drop their "Hs" from every word (eg "ospi'al - hospital with the "T" dropped as well ;) ), yet pronounce the letter "H" as "Haych" I think Si and I should head the national campaign to bring back proper English....... ;) Richard :slap:
  19. Still is, is it not? Wasn't it worth more per kg than gold recently? Richard :smw:
  20. Quit winding me up now fellas :nono: ;) Richard :p
  21. Too bad we can't put that to the test now eh??? ;) Still it was a good car once, but I'm pleased it has now long since been sold...... .......Julia now prefers the Rav-4 - driven hard that can embarass many a hot hatch  Richard :D
  22. You could turbo charge your Honda but at the end of the day you'd spend £3500+ and your existing car would not be worth any more for it. 300zxs are pretty reasonably priced at the mo so the best option is to sell your Honda and buy one. Personally, I'd never bother spending £000s modifying a car only to see the money potentially wasted; I'd just buy a newer/better/faster (not necessarily all 3 though :D ) car straight away ;) Richard :smw:
  23. Hey all, This is about the only thing I care to watch on the crap that's called TV nowadays....... .....anyway, we've been out celebrating my birthday and Julia didn't set the f###ing video properly so needless to say, it didn't record. Did anyone happen to record it, and if so please please can I borrow it??? Thanks in advance Richard ;)
