NZR - Merc SLK help
RAC chappie's diagnostic gubbins would not do mine  He thought the reason for the bad misfire over 2.5k RPM was down to a coil pack. Wrong! Turned out that the breather valves had become blocked (Hughes MB say quite common on 230K?), causing oil to contaminate the AFM. Result, a new AFM, new breather valve and the mechanic having to remove the inlet manifold and intercooler to clean out the mess from the spewed oil........Cost me £900 :mac1: That said, the car runs better than ever now :D Richard

Well my life is over
I'm guessing the combination of saving the tax, plus the extra net pay from his car allowance in lieu of the car. I do the same thing - I get a car as part of my salary package but I don't do any business travel. Since I don't want to drive anything that my compay would buy me, I chose the cash allowance instead. That way I can drive what I prefer! Plus I still get a fuel card to fill up any of my own cars - including the ZX :p . OK so the cost of the fuel used goes on my P11d and I have to pay tax on the benefit, but I'm still only paying for 40% of my total petrol ;) Richard

New Ferrari owner has a quick lesson??
Yes, OR they make the more dangerous move of deliberately closing the gap on the car in front just to keepp the Ferrari driver on the wrong side of the road :nono:

New Ferrari owner has a quick lesson??
I can agree with this. And who can actually relate to it? I can think of plenty of times, on our A-roads when you get one slow driver who travels everywhere at 40mph. (In both 60 and 30 limits :nono: ). Because some people are incapable of overtaking, you get a line of 4 or so cars all following closely, despite the fact that you can still see it is safe for them to overtake. Now if those folk are happy to plod along at 40, they should really leave a big enough gap so anyone who wants to drive (safely) at 60 can overtake one by one. But no, they don't so it only leaves the option of overtaking a 4 cars in one go. OK it is easier in a fast car as we know, but it is a greater risk. Richard

NZR - Merc SLK help
Looking at my SLK230, there are only 2 coil packs - it appears to have the "wasted spark" system IE 1 coil pack firing 2 cylinders. Mine is a 1999/2000 model; when I suffered a break down recently, the RAC patrol man said that for that particular year only a MB dealer would have the necessary equipment to accurately diagnose the fault. The later ones were more accessible. Don't know if he was talking shite though, but Paul C would know ;) I do like the SLK 32 AMG as well, but I would prefer the new shape 350. My next car, methinks....... Richard :D

What should I choose?
Wise words from Si (again). Sometimes, if I haven't driven my ZX for a week or two, I (foolishly) think why do I bother to keep it. Then I drive is for just a minute or so and remember. It's a great car - way better than my other cars. Plus as it has never let me down, I still have more confidence in it. Richard

What should I choose?
If I had to chose one of those it would be the Honda S2000. I did consider an S2000 as a daily driver some time back just because it is fast-ish, RWD and convertible. Also being Japanese helped a bit.......Instead I bought an SLK; slower and not as good in the twisties but that folding hard top just won the day. So there; S2000. The others just don't get a look in IMO Richard

New member so go easy :-)
IMO don't bother mate. Unless you can stretch to a GTR the Skyline is just not worth it. The GTS-T is slow comapred to a ZX, not as good looking and you will (probably) pay more insurance just because of the "Skyline" badge on it. Just my opinion of course....... Richard

Whats the Ultimate £4k Car?
Yup, well said again Vini  I bought mine before the prices went into free fall with the advent of the dodgy Ebay shite. I had always liked them, plus in comparison it was better value, less dated and more striking than a Supra TT :D Richard ;)

helppp
THE soundest advice yet........ Richard ;)

Wanting the black stripe again!!

Are you making plans for him.......? (Old song - probably before your time ;) ) Richard :D

Wanting the black stripe again!!
Spot on there Gio  Whilst I do like the 99-spec (have to say that.......... ;) plus it's the only bumper I like bar the stock one) the original bumper looks way better with the charcoal stripe, especially when the number plate is in the same position as the UK spec one. It does look lower and more purposeful..... Richard

Whats the Ultimate £4k Car?
Agree with this too - German engineering is not really all it's reputation suggests. I have a 7 year old (50k mile) SLK 230 as my daily driver and whilst it is a nice car, well built and classy in a way that BMW just cannot dream of, I still have more confidence in my 16 year old 300zx. The SLK broke down on the last day of my hols in June and needed to be brought home by the RAC. Apparently the breather hoses became blocked and caused oil to spew into the AFM thus knackering it. One £900 bill later, combined with the 300zx NEVER letting me down, kind of helps me have the utmost faith in Japanese over-engineering. Richard

Whats the Ultimate £4k Car?
Not driven a Corrado but I will agree with you there. Corrado may be one of the best handling FWD cars ever but you cannot compare it to a 300ZX/Supra TT/3000GT/RX7. The Corrado is more in the class of the Calibra/Cougar/Celica/200sx - not in the Junior Supercar/GT car league at all. Richard :D

Whats the Ultimate £4k Car?
You do have good taste Sarah! I love the older Porsches too - 928GT or GTS is my personal favourite. They are still holding their value as a modern classic too - much better than the new ones. I mean the Boxster, whilst it's supposed to be a decent drive is a bit gay..... I almost bought a 928 s4 before I bought my 300zx; however the ZX seemed the better buy at the time. I don't regret buying the ZX as I preferred it as a daily drive back then.......... .......but if I saw a decent low mileage GTS in black with cream leather for decent money now then I probably would let the ZX go ;) Richard :D

Not me....... .....just eaten - I made (fresh) a king prawn lime and coconut Malaysian curry. Washed down with a couple of Tiger beers and a bottle of Chardonnay. Sweeeeeeeet

Rarely mate - if I can't be bothered to cook we go out for dinner :D But I'd not class the local Indian (or maybe Chinese...... ;) ) as "fast food" in the same breath as McShite, KFC or Bugger King. In the Indian they do prepare things (allegedly :D ) from scratch, not regurgitate processed crap from a freezer full of corporate sludge. At least the Indian has a proper chef (my local chap has won several awards) compared to a grease monkey in McDs who just throws burgers in a fryer. And I make my own pizzas.............. :p Richard

Done My First Donut Today
Hmmmmmmm, doughnuts (A-la Homer Simpson) Prefer mine with chocolate glaze ;) Richard

New member so go easy :-)
Royal has summed it up really  RX7 is a lighter more pure sports car (although not sure of the 1/2 tonne less weight though - UK spec RX7 weighed in at 1310kg compared to the ZX at 1580kg. My maths makes that just over 1/4 tonne ;) ) The ZX is more a GT car, so it's better suited to fast long distance touring in the same vein as a DB9 or XK8 is today. But, in stock UK spec guise, the 300zx is surprisingly (very) slightly quicker than an equivalent UK spec RX7, but the rotary engine will drink much much more fuel. Turning to the 3000gt, it is nice car but weighs in at 1825kg with similar power to the 300zx. In stock form it does struggle against the other 2, with a 0-100mph of over 16 secs compared to 14.4 in the ZX. My opinion - drive all 3 and make your own choice - that's what I did and I think in the end I chose wisely for my own circumstances. Richard
