  1. I've recently had a re-con gearbox fitted but noticed on collection some oil had leaked as the drain plug was loose!!!!! Rather than re-fill with new oil i just added some MT90 although not sure what was in there already..... Anyway, i now find that after driving for a while the gears seem slightly harder to change almost as if someone has added treacle to it, could it be the oil as i'm using two different types or should i drain it all out and re-fill with all the same oil??? Cheers Alex
  2. I think for now i'll put up with up as just enjoying driving the car... Maybe later on will look again at a newer gearbox....was going down the (late 96 with improved synchros and bearings) route Paul at SWZ was enquiring but never got back to me with a price......
  3. Some months ago now i noticed some bad noise coming from 1 2 and 3 of the gearbox, turned out to the the input shaft (i think), it dissapears when the clutch pedal is pressed. I got a very low mileage gearbox for a mere £200 from Japcars, over in Hythe and had it fitted. The guy local to me in Twickenham noticed a piece of metal on the sump drain plug and suspected it could be part of the synchro. I started the car and couldn't believe how quiet it was then drove up the road noticing i crunched 4th gear but after doing this time again on the way home i knew something was up! Called Japcar and told them of the problem who very kindly offered to repair the box and return all in time for Christmas. I picked up the car and on the motorway noticed a high pitched whining from 3rd and when i filled up with fuel to re-start also noticed the starter motor sounded very crunchy! I got home and decided to give th ecar a once over and noticed: 1: Reverse light not working. 2: Loose heat shield knocking around the exhaust. 3: Left exhaust now too high and knocking on what looks like a very small strut brace under the car. 4: More seriously the gearbox sump plug was loose and oil had leaked out. when i filled it i had lost about a litre. 5: Now when i'm stationary i hear the old noise and it dissapears when the the clutch is engaged. It's nowhere near as bad as before and i should note when i filled up with oil it was probably different to the oil they used. I now cannot be bothered to take it back again as i've lost all faith and don't want anything else to happen. My question is will it harm the box if there's two type's of oil in there and is Redline MT90 the best for getting rid of any noise????? Finally has anyone else had similar problems because it's really pissed me off and i even thought of selling a few weeks ago!!!
  4. For **** sake!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  5. Ok so after a few weeks trying to source a gearbox and ordering one for £350 which didn't arrive after two weeks and finally getting my money back and finding another low mileage one (30k miles) almost fitted when the gearbox chap tells me the starter is well and truly ****ed!!!! Another two days after i should have had the car back he gets a new starter (as the old one was not refurbishable!!!!) and fits it. Tells me it's all ok and engaging in all gears ok. Good news is it's now very quiet and as the old one sounded like reverse in 1-3 i am very pleased! However he did tell me he found a very small piece of metal on the drain plug which is something to do with the synchros........!!!!! To cut a long story longer all gears are fine except 4th which will engage but crunches at speed, not when stationary or when moving slow..... What should i do now....go back to the guy who sold the box and try to get another or just make do with it????? The car has been running with the bad gearbox for so long i'm just pleased to get it back! Think i'll ring him tomorrow.......i'm thinking he should pay to get it fixed....even though the box was £200 inc VAT.... Why is nothing ever simple??????????
  6. Nope the GTS ones are the same as ours and offer him £300-£350 it's a more realistic price £500-£600 is too much, also i'd put on new pads just as a matter of course. I paid £350 for mine from an R33 GTR and they are worth every penny....a huge improvement over the standard milk bottle tops!!! By the way you'll need bigger wheels as they won't fit on the standard 300zx wheels... Alex
  7. Oh dear sounds like my old problem! Mine sounds like it's in reverse in 1-3 then quiet in 4 and 5. First check you have enough oil in the box, should be around 3.5 US quarts, add some gearbox Molyslip and drive for a few miles and listen????????? 4th and 5th have additional support in the box, when you engage these a rod and ring slide forward to support them but not in 1-3. My problem was because i didn't have enough oil in the box and the front or input shaft bearing didn't get enough oil and buggered up! Try the oil first though and see how you get on. How many miles has it done.........over 50k?
  8. The squeaky sound is probably the bonnet catch needing some grease on it.
  9. What again!!!!!!!!!!!!!! *****x i love those lights very cool!
  10. Anyone ever got round to making a set of these? http://www.clearcorners.com/products/nissan/300zx2/imgs/featcarA06.jpg Would love a set but a little too pricey... Cheers Alex
  11. Anyone know where i can hold of one of those funky little number plates for the front? I want to get rid of the number plate holder and drop it down a little to let more air in!!!! Ta! Alex
  12. I will definately check the gaitor but as i mentioned before the noise dissapears when i put the clutch down so i can't see how checking the gaitor will make any difference! However if it's another possibility and could save a new gearbox then soon as i drive back to London i will check it ;o) Cheers
  13. Is that brand new as in a post 96 TT box with stronger bearings better syncro......? Also how long would fitting take?
  14. Not a bad price for a brand new gearbox............then there's the fitting!!!!!!! I've changed a gearbox and overdrive on my old Triumph Spitfire in a few hours but not sure if i should attempt one on the 300..........then again how hard could it be???
  15. How much did it cost in the end Dunk????
  16. Input shaft bearing it is then! Anyone have any exploaded views of the gearbox? Would like to see where the Input Shaft Bearing is???? Cheers Alex
  17. That should of course be can't really afford it!!!!
  18. OK so i've put in Redline MT90 (about x3 litres) and also some Molyslip. Driven about 300 miles to Cornwall and still the gears whine in 1-3. Soon as i dip the clutch when idling the noise dissapears completely or if i'm in 4th or 5th again no noise whatsoever! :headvswal Does this mean i need to pull the gearbox apart and fix it or can i just run it with the noise until it goes bang!!!!!! Any ideas as i can really afford a new gearbox just yet! Cheers Alex
  19. With the filter how does £45 sound? Thing is i need to pick it up soon as i'm travelling this PM would that be possible James? Cheers Alex
  20. Anyone know where i can get some in London today???? Cheers Alex
  21. Sounds good how much will 3.1 litres cost me? Also would i need to put in more Molyslip or need i bother?
  22. Don't think Halfrauds sell Redline?????? Where can i get some tomorrow as i need the car to drive to Cornwall on Wednesday? Cheers Mark.
  23. Had a problem with the gears whining in 1-3 also noticed it dissapeared when idling and i dipped the clutch??????? Decided to change the gearbox oil and add some Molyslip..... Seem to only have drained out just over 1/2 litre which may be a reason for noise in 1-3 but i've put in 80-90.........is this really bad and should i put in 75-90???? Need to buy another litre as capacity is 3.1 but should i just drain out what i've put in and put back 75-90????? Cheers Alex
  24. Couldn't find any Redline Jeff said 80-90 should be fine although i should also mention i drained the oil and only got out just over 1/2 litre......could be the cause of my gearbox/clutch noise in 1-3rd i guess? If you think the Castrol 80-90 is really crap i can always change is as it's quite an easy job and have to do the engine oil soon.....let me know what you think Mark? Cheers Alex
