Smokey and bad fuel consumption.
Remove the intake side and check the turbo in case there is a bearing issue, look for signs of the compressor wheel hitting the casing, just in case the turbo is foobared:)

Smokey and bad fuel consumption.
Does it have an intercooler on it, if there is oil in the compressor side it could be restricting air, have seen that causing all kind of smoke/performance issues. Also i'd check in the tank in case there is a filter/gauze on the pump/sender unit. Basics first, again have seen people jump and throw parts/money at faults without checking the basics first only to get their fingers burnt by something basic/simple being the fault. Cheers John

Smokey and bad fuel consumption.
I would check the basics first, diesel nowadays creates the dreaded growth, is there a filter/gauze in the fuel tank, could be simple fuel restriction. Black smoke could be caused by restrictions in air, as could white smoke when the fuel is injected but poor combustion potentially shows up as white smoke/fuel vapour, have you had the sir filter out of it? The service interval on my Scenic for the air filter is 48k miles, fuel at 36k miles according to the dealer, both far too long IMO. Have you changed the fuel filter? I would cut it open after changing it to see what debris is in it. For me fule of thumb black smoke = this and white smoke = that is out the window as I have been caught out with things, for me 100% do the basics first, pump/sender out the tank, fule and air filter after that. Modern vehicles (I work on commercials) are a fookin nightmare, good luck. Cheers John

Renault Grand Scenic DCi Poor Fuel consumption
LOL I have a neighbour with a 2.2 Mercedes, his trip sits at 55 mpg motorway and between 45 to 50 town, maybee thats what we need to change the car for lol

Renault Grand Scenic DCi Poor Fuel consumption
I get your point about the small engine in the big car but the last 08 plate I traded in generally showed 48 to 49 mpg so I cant see why this one is lower by so much. I know for modern engines to be more efficient in what they put out the exhaust they use more fuel but not this much lol

Renault Grand Scenic DCi Poor Fuel consumption
Chris its got 17k miles on it just over a year old. Have just reset the trip after about 7 miles its at 32mpg looool can see trouble ahead.

Renault Grand Scenic DCi Poor Fuel consumption
Mark Car is doing exactly the same runs, mpg on the old car stayed steady winter/summer, car doesnt idle as with cost of fuel its switched off instantly, tyre pressures all to spec, a manual check is next on the cards, but we are using more fuel as the car is getting filled more regularly. What I would say is both cars allegedly had the same bhp but the newer one is a lot quicker off the mark. As for servicing it it was allegedly serviced before I got it but with dealers who knows. Its booked into the dealer next week to get checked, lol I told the salesman its coming back if its not rectified so will wait and see what Thursday holds. Cheers John

Renault Grand Scenic DCi Poor Fuel consumption
Guys 6 weeks ago I bought a 60 plate Renault Grand Scenic 1.5 DCi, the trip is showing 38.7 mpg. The 08 plate one that was traded in was returning nearly 50 mpg, with a few miles to and from the motorway and the bulk of its daily journey sat at between 50 and 60 on the motorway as her indoors doesnt break the limit. I was sold the car on the presumption that the dealer was puting money in my pocket, 39 mpg is costing me money, its booked in to get checked next Thursday but I know before it goes they will say there is nothing wrong with it. Anyone else had similar issues, I have registered with a Scenic forum and there are quite a few people complaining about similar returns. I know to be more efficient in what comes out the exhaust the car burns more fuel, logic being there somewhere but 10 mpg worse off, not for me, have told them if its not improved the car will be returned to them. Anyone else had similar issues with a newer Renault? Cheers John

proud new owner of a shed
Worse case scenario m8 break it and put the aftermarket bits on a better car, U will make more in parts specially selling a manual conversion, which is sad to say to be honest but more people are breaking them so they are getting rarer. Cheers John

grrrrr help? alternator fubared now?
To test the battery there are all kinds of electronic testers available but I prefer to use the old fashioned discharge tester. More than likely the alt is fooked but as you say up in the air test the voltage at the back of it. They are not that difficult to change just a lack of access but thats cars for you. All the best

Check using the body as an earth as well as across the battery in case its an earthing fault, electrical issues can sometimes be abnormal lol
