Could be an injector being lazy i.e. too much fuel is going in on tick-over. Mine did that.

Hmmm possibly try the CAS and check the timing as well as swapping the ptu. My ptu went but when it failed the car wouldn't start at all. Ivan

Take a coil pack out and a plug and rest it on the plenum and try cranking the car over and see if it sparks. If it does it rules out the PTU. Then listen for the fuel pump when you out the ignition on. Best way to do that is get someone else to put ignition on and listen in the boot for the fuel pump priming up. Ivan
