Hi all

I managed to get an hour today on the 300 so started trying to clean up the engine bay. I do like a well cleaned bay and this 300 is one of the dirtiest bays I’ve ever owned. Any heavily oiled areas I’ve had to deal with on previous cars I’ve dealt with using WD40. :thumbup1:Unfortunately the 300 is so groty that the WD40 wasn’t touching the sides without working it in with a toothbrush and cloth.:tooth:

Can you guys recommend any products that are more aggressive on contact please? :gun_bandana:

Cheers,Chris

P.S. Please feel free to post your engine bay to keep me motivated.

I’ve used Gunk before and, like you say, have found it to be good however it was pants on whatever the muck is in the 300.

Use a good degreaser and a toothbrush and then G101 neat with a tooth brush and it'll come off with ease.

Lol, that’s cheating if you pull the engine and respray. Although that’s the plan for winter 2019...

Post a pic so we know what sort of grime we’re talking about mate

Here we go...

It’s black but very crusty and almost sandy in texture.

This is just general grime

Here is a lot of soft gunk, looks like it was a leaking PS pot but I’ve cleaned a lot off.

And here is my first bit of cleaning.

Cheers Simon. Do you buy yours off eBay? My local motor factors don’t sell it.

G101 is a brand of APC, yes you can get it on eBay. It's amazing stuff and will remove staining and water marks like they weren't even there.

I'll be in my Z down in Portsmouth in a few weekends time. I'm taking it to a classic car show near Paris. I'll be taking the ferry from Portsmouth. If you're about on Saturday 28th in the morning and want to meet up briefly in Southsea or something since you're just down the road in Langstone.

Thats a dirty bay but very common. I used Gunk, T cut and polish.

That is wonderful. There’s more skill in my opinion in cleaning an engine bay than the body work. Do you unbolt a lot of items to get behind them properly or leave in place and look for a cleaning tool that can get in those hard to reach areas.

For your car Simon I’ll make the time.

Obviously, I’ll have to get some elbow grease down lower before the engine goes in but will make life a bit easier on the cleaning front

All purpose cleaner mixed to a 1 in 4 ratio with warm water and a soft bristle brush for anywhere that’s painted. I also find it helps if you have any rags, dip them in really hot water and then cover the area you want to work on. Leave it for a few minutes to soften the grime up before going at it with the APC. If that doesn’t cut through it try a dedicated tar remover (autoglyms one is available in most Halfords). Anything else use a stiff brush.

Personally find Gunk drys out really quickly

Unbolt what you can and dont forget the underside of the bonnet.

:punk:Soooo clean :punk:

For the painted parts of the bay I've used a general purpose degreaser such as AG's Engine & Machine Cleaner

worked in with various brushes and cleaned off with microfibre cloths (sometimes wrapped around a stick to get

to the awkward places).

For the electrical connectors I've disconnected each one and used Pagid brake cleaner aerosol blasted on and

worked around with a stiff small bristle brush. Whilst doing this I've placed rags underneath to catch the gunk

coming off. I also use the same approach for the numerous small components in the engine bay.

For the plenum I've used Frost's Ali Clean - Aluminium Castings Cleaner which is specifically designed for castings

that can't be polished as the blackening which results discolours the semi porous surface. Worked on with a brush

and then carefully washed off with water. The plenum will come up bright and clean.

To keep dust to a minimum on surfaces that are difficult to reach after cleaning I use an air compressor and airline.

Just order the G101, not cheap but it’s undiluted so should last a long time. Can’t wait for it to turn up now!
