Hi guys

Back in the day (don't ask how many "days" ago this was :wheelchair:) I used to organise rolling road sessions for car clubs that I used to be part of. I was wondering if there might be any demand for something like that here? I used to go to http://www.surreyrollingroad.co.uk/, we'd get 6-8 of us together for a morning meet, test the engines then drive off to a nice pub for a bite and bragging session.:clap:Not looking to do this until mid to late October, cars with Jim getting some TLC.

If you're interested post you name up and once I have rough numbers I'll see if we can get a morning slot a possible discount.

Cheers,

Chris.

Nice idea Chris in theory, but many zeds will not be set up for a good run or even safe to , many could be damaged by it, remember some are 27 years old now.

Last thing we all want to see is to loose some members engine`s on the rollers, saw it years ago even then when they were maybe 10 years old, when multi cars meets are arranged the rolling road garage have a lot less time to stay safe and will do a set price with a maximum hours to do all of the runs in, easy for mistakes to be made.

Like I said nice idea, maybe some will want to do it, make sure those disclaimers get signed though!!

Im up for this. I've been wanting to put the car on the dyno following some recent upgrades to check that it's doing what it should be throughout the rev range. Charlie at SRR was always very helpful when it came to feedback on the parameters so a good choice of location. Does Charlie even still work there?

I just need to source replacement recircs or a work around as they're leaking past the seals through the witness hole in the body casting. Once they're fitted and the system air tight again, I'm in.

Yep, Charlie still runs SRR, however it's moved from when you were last there, they're now in Farnborough.

Seem to remember seeing that he's shut first week of October

Hi Jeff

I hear what you're saying but would it not be better to get a car on the rolling road to check that the power is coming in as it should and possibly be able to spot an issue before it lets go than just wait for it to happen? We've all brought these cars for the great engine (among other things) and at some point or another will squeeze the throttle. I would rather do this and have the engine let go on the rollers with a few enthusiast next to me than on a A road in the

Middle of nowhere.

Also anyone not wanting to get on the road can still list their name for an after meet if interested.

Agreed if it fails on the RR it wasn't right to begin with, it's just a power run. If things aren't in good enough condition to give it death every now and again then it needs maintenance.

I'd be up for it but not till spring.

A SRR session from June '08.

I remember that! Good day that was! Hard to believe it was over 9 years ago!

Not sure if it was this exact meet, but was one of the first 300zx meets I went to. Andy Isherwood arranged it I think, as well as Marco. I still have the Dyno print out for the day!

Would be up for a blast at SRR.

reopened.

BigH's fault :)

What? :confused1:

I did it, I admit it...

Might try A Andrew to see exactly what the lower setting is.

Sorry about that I blame the "Black Russian" cocktails, consumed prior to posting.

Thought I’d reignite this post. I’m thinking towards the end of April or May. I’m easy for a date but would probably prefer a weekday. Anyone interested in a weekday blast or would you rather a weekend?

I have never been to one before and I am curious as to how much my cars are producing. Is it expensive to test a car?

1990 Black MT NA LWB = 2014 - 2020 (Sold)

1991 Red MT TT LWB = 2015 - 2017 (Stripped & Scrapped)

1991 Red MT TT LWB = 2017 - 2021 (Sold)

1991 Black MT TT LWB = 2018 - 2021 (Sold)

1989 Red AT TT LWB = 2021 - XXXX (Kept)

Depends on if your engine goes bang or not ?

On a serious note there are many things to consider before getting a rolling road session and not least the dangers, a bad or poorly set up engine will at best give you a disappointing result, at worse detonate your engine.

Now I know there are some super good RR guys out there and they do their level best to listen out for knock but by the time they are hearing it the damage has potentially started, this is compounded by the not true life air flow through and over the engine / car.

RR sessions are best done slowly and comprehensively, by that I mean a full check and map set up first, then changes made to suit, RR power runs do not include this, infact they will doubtful make even simple checks on oil level and condition, water level, this is the owners responsibility.

So lets assume all goes well and you get a RR read out saying you got a thousand BHP, firstly who really gives a t*ss, and second is it real ? how many zeds have been on sale and mentioned here with a RR print out that NO-ONE believes ... yes you know that how its is really. the variable factors such as ambient temp and engine set up, transmission type and more all have factors, even the RR workshops power supply can effect results if not correctly installed.

So yes I am a pessimist, come on lads the cars are near 30 years old lads do you really want to break them? how would it impact on you if the engine went tits up?

Sorry to be down on your thread but just want to add some caution, if the worse does happen will the forum or thread starter or RR garage cough up ? we all know that is a big fat NO, so really think about accepting any invite.

Have a meet instead, at a nice family pub, take the kids and have a sit down, meal inside and chat about zeds and cars and have a good time without any competition to concern yourself about.

Good luck guys, off to collect my pension and get the warden to cook my lunch.

The only way to avoid bresking the car is to never use it Jeff, even driving like miss daisy could be the coffin nail. I hear your concerns but there’s little difference between giving it death on a deserted A road to on a RR other than someone, who hopefully knows what they are doing is monitoring things.

I had mine on the rollers the year before last. Partly for curiosity but mostly because I wanted to set up the boost controller up in a controlled environment where AFRs could be monitored. It allowed us to turn the boost up run after run without pulling over. It was all very safe and useful tbh.

Thanks for your advice again on this post Jeff. As always I totally respect your view and observations, however in this case I’m prepared to risk my cars engine to see if elements of it are performing correctly in an environment I can’t replicate.

So who’s up for this and would you be available for a weekday run or weekend?

Hi. I’ve put a link on the first post, it might be helpful to you. The link says £40 for a saturday run, we may be able to get it a bit cheaper but to be honest I’m happy with £40 it would just be nice to meet up with a few of the south coast cars (and their owners ).
