Hi the club,

I am 16 and i recently purchased a 300zx 3CP7bee3.jpg and it will be my restoration project for a couple of years.

The car is 1990 automatic Twin Turbo targa top.

Good things:

- It only has 46,000 miles on the clock (74,000 km)

- I think it has barely 1000 miles on the automatic gearbox only recently replaced.

- It has MOT and drives well, gear changes are really smooth.

- coilovers with lowered suspension and a kakimoto titanium exhaust

- (apparently) really rare JDM from and back bumpers but missing the side skirts in the set (if someone could identify the bumpers that would be great so i could find the skirts for it watch?v=EfbMa9s61v8

- aftermarket ECU (not sure what make)

- It has an aftermarket air filter

Bad points:

- When driving you can hear an air leak and the car will not boost properly. (the previous owner said that the oil pressure and boost gauge work when they wont to but i have never seen the dial move, boost pressure stays at just over 0 psi and wont move. he said that it has a defi gauge controller but has no gauges connected so i am guessing that the oil pressure and boost gauges have been cut and re-routed to the defi). There is a possibility that it will still boost but it is not noticeable enough as the acceleration is very linear.

Questions:

1. Does any one know of any good z specialist in/around London. I heard Z centre in Bristol is the place to go to, but its not really worth the trip at this stage.

2. Does anyone have an electronic boost controller they could sell which might fix the cars boosting problem. i have a blitz sequential boost controller but i am missing the solenoid and i have no idea if it works or not.

3. It has been recommended I replace the cam belt as I don't know if it has ever been replaced. Is there anything additional i should be thinking of replacing at the same time and where i should go. (I will get the boost looked at if I do not fix it)

4. Are all z32 turbos really quiet? i plan on upgrading to bailey dual dump valves which will help performance but also give the iconic turbo pressure release sound. should i hear the turbos spinning at high rpms or at lease a whu-tu-tu-tu when slamming the throttle shut or do i have to upgrade to really expensive turbos for that to work?

Now for the parts:

I heard somebody on the forum had a pair of rear speaker grills, could i get in contact with someone that does, Thanks.

Also if anybody is breaking a car does anyone have an engine cover as i do not have one. (the 'Nissan v6 3000' metal plate thing)

Finally does someone have a drivers side targa wind deflector, a little plastic bar that rises when you take the targas on it. my brother snapped it off (don't worry, i dealt with him).

Thanks and hi everyone, I'm Ali

I was thinking if it can't boost properly, check if it's in safety boost? Code should be 34, 3 slow flashes and 4 quick flashes

Hey Baz, I asked a breaker for a quote for the items and he has come back with: engine cover £15 and rear speaker grills £15 postage £10.00.

Is this a good deal or would you be able to get it better?

Thanks, Ali

I can do you the speaker grilles, engine cover and targa wind deflector for £30 inc postage mate.

"I don't want to start a bidding war" haha

also, about the boost you can hear some air leaking at idle and at full throttle, so I think I might be the boost controller incorrectly set up or just a leak in the system.

A: BOVs won't make the turbos sound louder, won't do anything for performance, don't really do much anyway.

OK mate, you made your point. AGAIN!

omgitsalic - Go buy some BOV's and enjoy them. FungleBumpkin won't talk to you any more, but that's not so much a bad thing ;)

That's 'cause he asked the question AGAIN.

No, it's fine. ill go without them, its just the stock ones are kinda boring. eventually ill probably get some bigger turbos, but for now i need to focus on fixing it :tt2:

If you can hear air leaking it must be a sizeable leak.

If I were you. I would get the thing fixed up to stock. Get it as good as new, with service items, belts, pumps. Then get it remapped with an EBC.

At that point I would think you would be happy with a 350hp car. From there, get a proper intake setup and get some BDE recircs. You will have a fabulous car.

Advantages are that it will be more reliable doing it that way. You won't buy any false economy parts, second hand turbos, Chinese turbos, injectors etc. You get good use out of your nissan turbos and can then drive them to death before spending on big ones.

It will be bloody rapid after a service, ebc and remap.

Have a ride in mine one day, you will want to buy it off me afterwards, it has auto turbos and 400andalot horsepower, 500 and some ft lbs of torque.

To be more clear, it was dynoed at 430fwhp 550ftlbs of torque, it has since been modified further, is a lot more powerful and torquey, but was remapped on the road not a dyno. So it's more than 430/550 from about 3000rpm.

You cant hear the leaking from the engine bay, only from inside the cabin so my first guess is that the vacuum hose for the boost has been cut and left when the gauges were taken out.

It Has a large air intake on and already has an aftermarket ECU on it, ask martin what make it is, i have no idea xD. The owner before martin had boost gauges and a blitz boost controller and it made around 450. since everything was ripped out now i think it just runs as a NA with a big intake and a big exhaust

When I first got it running that was exactly like that and wasn't boosting at all, I guessed it was the remains of the EBC where the pipework was going through it that was causing the problem.

Hence the cheapy manual boost controller. When I drove it then it wasn't as quick as the shorty but pretty close. The shorty is a manual and will spit you sideways when the turbos boost. The auto was never as aggressive but pulled bloody well.

My daily drive is a 335d xdrive so I am well aware what a good old slug of torque and a chunk of ponies feels like. I reckoned when me and my lead foot took it out it was mid to high 300 BHP. The guy before me claimed 450 but it never felt that strong to me. The shorty is about 400.

It does sound like it has acquired a significant boost leak somewhere.

I think the ECU is Blitz there was a little paperwork with the car for it.

Bit gutted really as it was running pretty well. A guy called Lee (Sorcerer on here) took it out and came back with and enormous grin across his face so it was definitely working then.

Hope you find it soon

Martin

Hi Martin,

Yeah it pulls pretty well and runs fine, i just don't think it is boosting as it should do.

I'm no mechanic at the moment so i think ill take to down to get looked at when i replace the cam belt. Since i'm no mechanic the first job i think i will do is a full respray, i have a spray gun so ill try to get to grips with it.

I can do the little jobs here and there but when it comes to engines, man i don't want to break anything XD

Pair of uprated stock recircs with 21psi of gt2860s will wolf whistle at all the teen girlies in McDonald's within a 5 mile radius

Ah, so they add a stronger spring. Thanks.

Auto turbos are slightly smaller, but give slighter better response than manual turbos. Horses for courses.

Cheers, are there any identifying marks showing what they are? My car started off as an auto, but they've been changed or upgraded at some point. The history only says "360 degree turbos" though, so I've got no idea what it has.

On the turbo housing, it will have the model of the turbocharger, another member can probably tell you which models are for turbos and which are for autos.

But the turbos are deep within the engine bay so this might be hard to check

Just means they've had 360 degree bearings fitted. They're probably stock turbos in that case and a high probability they're the auto ones if yours was originally automatic.

Auto turbos are 0.54a/r (that's the housing size I believe) and will have 686 on housing, manual turbos are 0.63a/r and have 687 on the housing. Essentially they are the same except the auto, as previously said spools a little quicker, but it runs out of puff a little sooner.

tomomontana do you think i could make you an offer for your skirts and then you can buy some '99 spec ones or something please :) . I want the full impul kit ⊂(▀¯▀⊂)

You can make an offer..... Chances are I'll say no though mate  (unless it is an obscene amount)

Although saying that, they will be coming off very soon so I can fully check and repair any metal worm on the sills.

I would offer £500 which is over double the cost of most new skirts haha. hope you accept plz

That carrot is well and truly dangled!
