MOT Failure!

I'm gonna say that despite the tone of this post I am not actually murderously angry, just pretty frustrated and deeply concered for my car :)

Pretty unimpressed, my car failed and is now out of MOT. I took it to a National tyres in Elgin and was suprised to hear it had failed. Brake efficiency! Cough splutter, please stand still while I murder you Mr test man. We can come back to that one, and rusty sills.

Now rusty sills, Mark looked at these on my request the other month and said something like, "Tom they're not the best, not the worst, will need doing some time they're now wax oyled and won't be rapidly getting worse." Totally what I expected and I plan to do a full Bodymech job on the car as funds allow next summer, me and Mark agreed this was sensible. Now I have some smirking test man with a toffee hammer and a strong arm telling me

"When I see an old car I go straight to the sills, give them a really good looking at."

I bet you do fella, pass me that hammer, actually you can keep it I am going to bludgen you to death with this 4 pot k sport rear calliper.

"The back brakes are too weak" lets play spot the difference pal, see those 17 inch brakes on the front, and the milk bottle tops on the back, and these new k sport ones to go on. I am not paying you for new rear pads!

I quickly took the car to another garage for a second oppinion where it is still sat waiting for a test. I am not after a dodgy mot, just a fair one, to look at the car you can tell it's no banger, held together with tape, it is a pride and joy. I will not pay a man with spry paint and an arc welder 300 quid to rip my side skirts off and pass it when I am going to pay 4 figures for a proper job next year.

Sorry, its upsetting to see my car like that, I feel i rescued it from national, I absolutely love the poor thing, I felt as bad as if they said my best friend had failed on rust!

Would of made sense to have had had the MOT done when the other work was done before collecting, then always easier to be wise after the event, testing is very subjective with large sections of the test left to the testers opinion and judgement.

Sounds like a lottery on who you take your car to Tom. We have Government run and made MOT centers taking hundreds of cars a day and they are very good and well run.

This was the last time I took my Z it was night time so pics are not to good but you can see 7 lanes for testing and you go in one end and out the other in about 10 mins with a pass or fail.

I think some testers are just desperate to fail cars, one place mine came out with a list of advisorys as long as your arm. It passed but he made out he had done me a favour. The car had been at zedworld the year before and only done like 3k miles, I liked couldn't see any of them aside from the rear tyres on the markers(they love that one don't they, unless they are spanking new they are always worn apparently) mot it a year later somewhere else, he commented on how clean and together the car was for its age...

Good luck, bet it passes.

Yes agree with the sentiment there, its not like you want a bad MOT just a fair one that takes into account the age of the car and what is important, this is why we do so many MOT tests over the year with most of our 300zx customers passing first time, not all mind as nothing dangerous would ever be let through, having a good working understanding with your tester is important.

How did he brake test it, hope it wasn't on the rollers, lsd or 4wd should not be tested,

Should have been tested with a deceleration meter...and its hard to fail one of them lol...

Exactly that Jeff I'd rather know if it's not right, but when you know there's nothing wrong and someone's trying to dupe you it's not cool. I probably spend more time under that car than in it so I know every nut and bolt, if it's not right I likely already know about it. Thankfully I have now found a chap who is reasonable and is happy for me to take the opportunity come mot time to have a good look under myself while it's up there.

If anyone has hard time getting an mot who's close enough to drive to me,

I can do the mot and if its a zed I have a soft spot so im a push over lol...

If it aint gonna kill u it will be ok....just pm and were sort it out.

Its a lot to do with vosa themselves some testers pass and advise to cover there arse,

If they get a check on a car and they miss it completely u get a lot of points but if its passed and advised, then u have picked up on it and mentioned it so u get less points,

If are to strict u can get points too...

Its quite a dodgy job constantly looking over you shoulder.

TBF a lot of people count the mot as maintenance, "it's in great condition, passed it's MOT last week" etc, so it's pretty important to get those numpties in once a year to check their crap boxes over, we have all seen them, exhaust falling off trim hanging out. I think if they ever do increase the lifespan of the MOT to two years the accident rate will go up.

I know most of my other halfs friends don't know they need to check oil and water and tyres etc you know the basic stuff.

How did he brake test it, hope it wasn't on the rollers, lsd or 4wd should not be tested,

I can see the reason for 4wd with permanent drive. What is the issue with lsd on rollers (each wheel tested as a pair)?

Project 1547 - Out of the Blue

She's so fine, there's no tellin' where the money went - Simply irresistible.

The problem these days too is iff you think its been an unfair fail and go elsewhere ime sure the fail points stay with the car like a lifelong tattoo:wacko:

Hold on Terry you will have all of the UK z owners worried, at a pedestrian 3.5 miles per hour the brake roller stresses is negligible, any stresses on the LSD in normal road use will far exceed those resulting from being put on a brake test roller that works at 3.5 mph!

You are correct in principle ( see Vosa MOT recomendation 3.7 Brake Performance (Roller Brake Test) attachment )

but been pedantic over the test was exactly we and you we saying not to be, zed owners have enough to worry about, in 14 years doing Mot tests on Zeds never seen a diff remotely damaged from it two minutes in the brake roller, saying that to fail on the roller the brakes do have to be bad as it is such an easy pass level.

Its said not to test it on the rollers with an lsd it can brake the diff,

You shouldn't lock 1 wheel while the other is spinning, I wouldnt test it on the rollers at all if it breaks I'll be the one paying for it,

Has a tester if its lsd and every tester I know will not test it on the rollers,

And if he tested it on a deceleration meter it would have passed if it didnt there must be something serious wrong...

What was the brake weights,

Did he test both wheels together, did one lock why the other one was still low atl lanes can give incorrect readings.

The wheels should each be tested independent, but does not have to be so if 1 wheel is wet slips on the rollers and locks,

The other could be reading low...

And if each wheel is tested independent then 1 wheel will be spinning on the rear why the other is locked which is where damage can be done to the diff...

And this bit says it all for the tester:

If it will break it or not it should not be tested.

so your tester jeff was doing it wrong and put your cars at risk of damaging the diff,

are all uk an jdm cars fitted with a lsd diff ? is there any models and years that don't have lsd ?

All 300zx are lsd even na cars, if u jack the rear wheels up on a car with an lsd when u spin 1 wheel the other will spin the same way not the opposite way...

yes was just making sure. get this the Porsche boxster I had didn't have lsd diff its used to piss me off big time not having lsd.

Yep one wheel drifting lol, I had a lexus and one wheel would spin in the wet all the time...

Sorry guys, back with you been out on a job, I'll put it in SAR Saturday later.

I don't think the second garage is going to look at it till monday, national tyres did use the rollers, because I said your computer will shit itself when it sees the difference in brake power. The man was a robot, had no shades of grey it was black or white. "Mate my brakes are not standard" "The rears aren't strong enough, the car has failed" etc etc...

I just hope this other place is personable as it seemed to be, thanks for the support, I feel a lot better. If he said wheel bearing, or headlight or something I would have said change it, but those 2 particular things. I take it as a victory that that is all they found, Gary and other military people will know, you never get 100% on an inspection.

why dont you fit the new rear you have ?

so your tester jeff was doing it wrong and put your cars at risk of damaging the diff,

Given we know it does not cause any damage on the 300zx what your talking about is the actual Vosa advice that I highlighted, the key here though is the rules, regs and advice has to cover every car that can come in and every kind of roller tester so becomes generic in its application, any tester worth his salt will know what does and does not work in the real world and an experienced tester will have learnt many area`s of the test can be misleading, from this Terry I take it you never test cars with lsd or abs on the rollers? so you have not gained the knowledge then from actually trying it out to see if that is the case, widening your experience procedures is always a good thing and a little application of good sense goes a long way, but do accept in principle the rules state otherwise.

Dan, the rear k sports haven't arrived, the 12 weeks they reckoned has now been 14 and they're apparently, due tomorrow. I think they must grow them from seeds :headvswall:
