My dad gone one for the last mini he restored, think it was a like for like one. I would see a problem if it was a genuine plate, but I wouldn't change it to something not genuine

Very true Gary but that is assuming should si ever sell up that the car would be sold to someone on the forum which may not be the case not every owner of a z32 is a member of this forum. Also regarding the US market if the vin plate is not original even if it is original but the rivets have been replaced it is illegal.

Edited by pig

I just removed mine and bined :)

Then you may have trouble at the next MOT as they check the VIN number plate, no plate no MOT, that was my experience when i took mine off to respray the crossbeam.

I would agree with that if their market value was substantially higher than it is. However, with their current values and the car being purely an old low value (relatively speaking) enthusiast / hobby vehicle, I am not sure that same argument would apply?

Good point Si, but what about in another 5 years when all the poor Z32s have rotted away; leaving only collectable examples which command ever increasing sums (you never know:wink:)

Personally, I'd leave it alone. Maybe do what you can to machine polish the original 'plate - and perhaps a coat of lacquer to seal in your handiwork - but I would not replace it, even if it was looking a bit ropey...

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Even though the car is mint Simon i think normal patina on the original VIN looks fine.Iff i was buying ide sleep much better knowing it had the original Nissan plate when 1st built. Now iff your after concourse condition from head to toe then thats another story and i could relate:wink:

Can you get a pic of it to show how bad it is

The top part was a little grimy and the black lettering slightly worn, so I masked the lower part and polished the top section last year. It looks neat enough.

Bloody hell Si, that looks terrible. No wonder you want to replace it. I would not drive your car until that is done.

Alternatively have you considered therapy?! Lol!

Up yet bum Paul! Go back to driving your recycled U-boat! Ha. ;)

At least I can get a new vin plate for my u boat easy enough!! :D

Slightly off topic. Are you getting your engine bay painted?? I know it's going back to the paint shop Si and I've been thinking "what could need sorting?". The condition of that VIN plate would worry me a lot less than a hand painted engine bay on such a meticulously painted exterior. :detective:

But a freshly painted bay would be offset perfectly by a nice new VIN!

Ask Hellraiser about my engine bay. It looks professionally done! It certainly isn't 'hand painted'. Those that have seen it have been very surprised.

That still doesn't answer my question bud. So you didn't use blackboard paint and a 6" shed and fence brush?? I wasn't having a dig Si, I was genuinely trying to work out why your car was going back for paint. And as I said, thought a new VIN would be the icing on the cake if you were indeed getting the 'bay painted.

The bay will get paint at some point mate, but likely when the engine next comes out. As for what I am having done, that's a little secret. No one will likely notice, but it's a big job! :)

Are you having a Japanese mechanic remove & install every nut & bolt so it's only been touched by Japanese hands?! :shuriken:

I have removed mine and i mot cars and see no problem with it cause there's a chassis number just under the scuttle panel I use that to get the chassis number,

To paint the engine bay properly the tag would need to be moved so any car with a colour change should have had it removed and left off or rivited back on...

id leave it off and rivet it back on if the time came.

this is mine removed much better lol, but I

wish I welded the little holes up

Photo bucket user error!

I realize that !!!

Just examined my plate and it's not bad at all, certainly not losing sleep over it, not as good as yours Si, expect we will not find one much better imo.
