So its finally happening after been off the road for well over a year the zed is on Target for its refurbishment.

Last year I started with doing all the underbody suspension stuff to make the ride more stable and after that

I decided I wanted to do a full strip down to the bare shell and start from scratch to create a show quality z32.

After much bad luck and many thousands of pounds wasted on rotted zeds i'm cracking on with the original plan.

So as a quick update i'll post some older picks followed over the next few weeks by an overall progress report.

Starting off with how she was when I first purchased her 3 years ago until the state she is now then showing the

strip down and all the bad luck I've had.

So here she is as I bought her :

my car sounded like that after not starting it up for like 6 months was the lifter once i drove it the oil got pushed around and the noise went.

sounds like a rod...i thought Mr Dent built the motor and given that fact i find it almost impossible that it would be a rod...

mine sounded 100% the same as that

i didnt go till i drove the car round the block then once the oil got round it stopped

Well done mate

I think we are at almost exactly the same point on our rebuilds, even down to the missing rear window trim

Now that my zed is home for some tender care I thought i'd put her up on some axle stands to fix

some of the issues I've had.

First was the oil filter which was replaced with a new HKS.

Then I tackled the issue of the damaged loom cable going to the gear box.

So I stripped the melted loom down to discover that none of the internal cables were actually exposed.

Bugger so something else is blowing the fuse and I now have another problem on my hands.

taped the whole thing back up and pushed it away from the down pipes which melted it in the first place.

Next issue was the blow back correctly diagnosed by groover.

I started her up again then had a look underneath for any tell tale signs and I found it :

This is the joint of the centre section of the exhaust and hard to see but they have a gap in the gasket.

They are fairly tight and even if I forced them closed further I might end up stripping the bolts.

I was thinking that if I hack saw off the link in the middle should that free them up for a better connection ?

I also noticed that there was a fair amount of water dripping out of here too.

You can see the water in this pic and also the large gap between the joins.

On a final not after I drained the oil tonight I decided to refill it with fresh semi synthetic 10w40.

The old that came out was fully synth at 10w45 and it was very dark for being in the engine for

only a month with minimum running time.

I'm guessing as the engine has been sitting for a year all the crap got cleaned out with the first stuff.

You do have the correct rating fuse? Your not trying to run a small sun off it either are you?

Good news on the oil filter. The oil goes black in these cars pretty quick, turbos high heat low volume all takes its toll. Hence why you should change it every 3k miles. You may be right though that it's the crud coming through. See what your next change looks like.

As for the exhaust, that the problem with those japspeeds. Fitment isn't perfect every time. If I was you I'd disassemble the joint, work some exhaust gasket sealant into the joint and granch the bolt up. I know your worried about damaging the bolt but if that did happen you only need an m12 but and bolt iirc. Replacement can be acquired easy.
