Dropped socket down turbo pipe..... HELP!!!!!!!!!

well was doing some work removing EGR and the bloody 12mm long reach socket dropped down the rear pipe and into the snail shell of my drivers side turbo......

I have tried a magnet on wire, wire, everything I can think of and cannot get it out.....

stripped the front pipe off and can see blades....

Removed elbow, removed all but 1 manifold nut and washer... can't get to it due to the inlet being in the way, can't seem to get to the 4 bolts holding the turbo to the manifold.....

Any idea's..... my arms and hands hurt from trying to get to these bolts......

I was actually going well till this bloody nightmare....

Can you rotate the inlet side of the turbo so I can get to the manifold bolt?

Mine seems to have a big cir clip holding it on and can't remove that as can't get to it.....

AAAAARRRRRRGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHH..........

I used a magnet on a wire coat hanger, had the same problem when i dropped a 1/4 inch 10mm socket head down my turbo.

Helps with the wire coat hanger as you need to keep the magnet from the sides of the turbo or you get stuck before getting near it.

I tried a magnet and the socket has turned and is wedged in there........

if you have the blades on show, can you not use that to your advantage and move the blades while the magnet is also on the socket, might free it, other wise it sounds like turbo off and apart job if its wedged in there, unless you just try getting the metal coat hanger on it and shifting it that way, just be careful not to damage the turbines.

Are you 100% sure it went in?? you should be able to get a 90 degree small pick in the front of the turbo and feel for it given that you cant find it from the top. With regards to "clocking" the tub by undoing the circlip, forget it as its a mare when on the bench getting the clip to un-seat then moving the housing.

I have magnet sticking to the socket but it is laying on it's side and won't rotate to come out of the hole it went in through.... I watched it go down the pipe, so it is definitely there.....lol

How can i get that manifold bolt out directly above and at the back of the pipe the socket dropped into.....

Or is it best to try and get the 4 off between the manifold and turbo??

If so, how do you remove the front rear from the 4????

The socket went down the outlet pipe... the one with the 90 degree elbow on it, middle of turbo..... Engine is in the car....

the problem is it is a long reach socket and has gone down the pipe and turned so it is laying sideways.... can't rotate it upright to be able to lift it with magnet....

so trying to remove manifold and turbo and can't get to middle rear nut on manifold.... the one behind the 90 degree elbow....

can't get a spanner on it.... 90 degree elbow removed by the 3 bolts, but still can't get a socket or socket and extension on the nut..... I haven't got any universal joint extensions either.... they have gone walkies.....

How do i remove this last manifold bolt???

Do I need to remove the 90 degree exhaust elbow?

Anyone free tomorrow to help me get this bloody turbo off and get it back when i get the socket out please???

You won't get that bolt on the manifold it's a dick to do that one up with the engine out. Your best undoing the four that hold the exhaust housing onto the manifold. If you dropped it down the front housing, that's aluminium. Unless you've pushed it, it can't really jam anywhere. Your potentially a bit snookered here. Even with the tub off you will more than likely have to remove the front housing with is a horrible little job, to force it out.

Best way forward is to remove the turbo, much easier than you think, once off it can be turned upside down and shaken free.

What id do is pop off the 90 take a coat hanger with a folded over end and poke around gently till I dislodged it, then use my flexible stick with a sting magnet to pull it out. With a cold sweaty stress all the while.

Hi z32bolt, this is driving me mental....

How do you get the back 2 off the manifold...?

I can bend the locking flaps on the front 2, but couldn't work out how to get the back 2.....?

I have dug out one of my spare turbo's and tried to make a bent wire from some rod using the spare to work out where it is stuck.. I tried it on the turbo on the car and can feel the socket, but no way I can get it..... it's wedged.....

cheers...

Russ

Tried that and it is completely wedged right round the bend..... magnet sticks to it, but just pops off when you try to pull it out......

Thanks anyway....

Take a look at one of my old posts below, there are some pictures of which show the turbo fixings and removed, I will add another pic in a few minutes once I have added some more info to it, back in a min...

Ok back here we go, I have marked the 4 x turbo nuts 1 to 4

TURBO OFF.jpg

With the elbow removed both 1 and 2 are accessible to bend back the locking tabs and get a 13mm short spanner in there, the nuts are not that tight normally and also once loosened off slightly will spin on fingers.

3 and 4 nuts needs the water pipe banjo bolt removing to access them, I also remove the actuator as its so much easier, the tabs again need bending back and there is no particular way other than trying whatever screwdrivers you have to do that. No 3 nut actually will have good access and can be undone easily with a medium drive 13 mm socket, the last nut 4 is a little harder, I use smaller drive 13 mm socket on a wobble extension and whilst holding the water pipe to one side, one little tip about the locking tabs is it is easier to not refit them, you can use self locking nuts ( not nylock) or thread lock, either will work.

Just spoke to father in law who has a flexi camera on a stick thing with a monitor on the other end..... going to try to see how far this is stuck tomorrow....lol

I am going to try the 4 turbo to manifold bolts tomorrow morning.... why is it when they are off the car they look easy to get to the bolts.....lol

I have the spare here on my table and it looks easy to get to everything.....

I don't have turbo pipes, so not totally sure what it looks like. Feel free to shoot me down, but how about getting a hoover (vacuum cleaner) in there and suck it out?

I'm guessing you've already thought about this and it's not doable.

Cheers Jeff, studying the pics.... I will have to remove exhaust elbow tomorrow and completely remove the decat pipe... hanging down at the moment... I spent ages trying to get to that illusive bolt on the manifold.... gave up after cursing and kicking things....lol

LOL.... nice idea.... but it would spin the turbo up and I am trying not to do that in case it takes out the rotors....

Thank you soooooooo much for this Jeff, you do not know how much I appreciate that...... I owe you a beer.....

And thanks to everyone who has responded with idea's of how to get the socket out.....

I havent read all the replies if its already been said then my bad, get the hoover out any try to get some 2/4mm nylon pipe attached to the end of the suction hose, I know it will be going from about 1 1/2 inches to 2/4 mm but this will increase suction power. Then feed the pipe slowly down and around in the pipe, if the hose gets good surface contact you may be able to pull it out.

I think thats worth a try?

Hi Jeff, I don't suppose you know the nut size for the 4 turbo studs?

I am trying to source some locking nuts that aren't nylock..... I will have to pop down to local fastener company monday and wondered if you knew the size and thread pitch?

Cheers....
