What Exhaust do you have?...Varex Mufflers oppinions...

If some of you remember i'm looking at changing my exhaust, The pipes from my mid section to the backbox are badly corroded and have got little holes behind the wheels and they're slowly getting bigger.

I'm still unsure what to do. I've managed to find a place in Darlington that will replace those two pipes with stainless and attach them to my original Kakimoto boxes for £80 a side. however the boxes are quite old and looking through the pipe it doesn't seem to have a lot of packing left inside them.

The bloke said if I provide new back boxes he will fit them at no extra charge. but if he were to be providing the back boxes then it would be £200 a side, but he said it would be very loud, and would probably ruin it.

So in the spirit of keeping it quiet I've come across the Xflow varex mufflers, for those that aren't familiar its basically a muffler with a remote operated butterfly valve in the box giving you the option of a silenced muffled sound, or at the push of a button a straight through pipe

http://www.xforce.com.au/about-varex-remote-control-sports-muffler.php

the only problem been is that they are based in Australia, so shipping is expensive

Through talks with a bloke on ebay I've managed to work out a deal that will get me a pair of the 2.5" cannon boxes (or ovals, haven't quite decided yet) to my door for around £665 including VAT at customs and excise. then there's the £80 fitting each of course on top.

I just can't decide weather that's a little over the top or not, just to have a change of sound on the mufflers.

My worry is if I buy another system off the shelf then it'll end up been too loud and i'll regret doing it.

Any thoughts or ideas? What system is most common, and what do they sound like?

I like a roar when smashing it about some country roads, but I hate a constant drone on motorway trips. mine at present isn't too bad, but at the same time i'm only comparing it to my friends systems on their cars. I've never actually heard another zed from the inside...

Are the resonators fitted in the centre xpipe?

Yep,

Bit of a daft question, but the two box thingy's in my centre section, are they resonators :blushing:? How much difference does the shape of the centre section make? Mine looks like a H join but I believe its actually two separate systems, and they don't actually join, having it off in the past and looking down it, it looks like two separate pipes.

The two sides should be balanced in some way (X or H pipe), its to do with the offset negative pressure pulses from each bank, but it also improves the sound.

This is what I used to have about 3 years ago...

Till the Police did a clamp down in our area of cars with modified exhausts. They took a dim view and got an on the spot fine of £80 so had to change back to my Mongoose...

Miss the noise of these exhausts but it was over 120db at 4000RPM... Still have them so maybe thinking of getting one of those electronic noise muffler things and fitting them back on.

What was it?

It was a custom one I made myself using a JANSPEED back box and the original mongoose pipe work to the back box. Originally I just chopped off the the old mongoose back box and fitted my own. Glad I kept the mongoose in a way because it's quieter and keeps the authority's happy!

That sounds really nice..... Mine was similar sounding when mine was a N/A.... Mine was made by London Stainless Steel and is not very nice looking, the flanges are rusty and the 4 tips are way too short to clear my rear lower spoiler.....

I need to get mine extended but that will have to wait till I can find someone to weld stainless at a very reasonable price.....lol

Shame you had to remove them....

Watching my Z disintegrate on my driveway!!!

I think at some point I will be removing my japspeed boxed and welding in some updrafting dual tips similar to whats on the r35.

Its 2.5" pipes from mongose system, no cat + x-pipe + back boxes like on picture below

My apologies yes Simon it is a veilside system I was thinking bout Brian znut's zed as his has the kaki system on

correct Ian...Kakimoto single exit which when the loud pedal gets pressed the sound gives me an instant hard on:yes:

Lee your's is a bucket, I reckon I could fit my head in them. although it does sound pretty.

Obviously you've not seen it for a while (since you're always busy lol). I now have a veilside one lol

oooh, sexy stuff. I thought you meant your buckets were veilside. we'll have to get a meet sorted at some point. before the weather goes tits up again.

Yeah, the Veilside system is the same as mine Stevie. Not the old wheel-barrow-donkey-dicks that Lee use to have. :)

In addition, if you're in anyway concerned with noise and droan, try sourcing a Veilside system. They really got the design spot-on. The beautiful deep burble when you want it. No droan, no cabin intrusion and an exotic engine note. If you don't fit dump valves, it'll sound even better...ie, just nice exhaust note.

wheel-barrow-donkey-dicks

I tried googling veilside exhausts but all I got was a couple of sexy sounding video's and some old threads from a load of forums. i'm guessing these will be about as rare as that impul kit.

There's a guy with a full kakimoto system, just waiting for him to get back in the country and send me a few more photo's. He wanted £800 for the lot, but because I already have stainless front pipes I was hoping to get it a bit cheaper, well a lot cheaper if i'm honest If it's looking close to the varex ones then I think i'll probably go with them, they do look like a quality piece of kit.

As long as you didn't try googling 'wheelbarrowdonkeydicks'. I have licence on that one as Lee hated them too! haha.

They are rare, but they do come up. Lee does have a spare one I think with some minor damage. Also keep an eye on Japanese Yahoo Auctions - I've bought some stuff on there.

You using that kakimoto single exit I sold you a few years back Brian? That was an amazing sound, I sacrificed that awesomeness all in the name of quad exits... Form over function, doh!

No Joel i sold that and regretted mate...my current one (same type) bought from Jeff earler this year

I loved it. Sounded awesome. The wheelbarrow one was before stevies time. Will have to find some photos of the different ones.

The veilsides are super rare nowadays

I like the look of quads just dont like the sound, too burbly on idle and a lot of resonance ive found, never heard a set yet i like.

I know he,s going to hate me for it but the worst sounding pipes are those Mark derby has just fitted...sounds like a V8 running on 6 imho and just picks up the crank/cylinder phasing too much like them scubbys.Something just does,nt sound right with them.

It is. Kakimoto systems don't have rolled tips. In addition, I've seen this car at Jeff's. It has a Veilside system.....just could do with a bit of a deep clean! ;)

You're very welcome to bob round with some brasso and a big polishing cloth!!!

No they are not mongoose, now i dont know brand of them. On motorway around 2-3k rpm they are resonating (like a subwoofer) , so its not a really nice and quiet exhaust ;) . But i think sound they make is really nice :)

Another option to consider. Not sure if anyone else has these in the UK yet. Although....they are possibly the complete opposite to what you are after...
