I posted at the start of this month i had bought a SWB N/a with a naff engine and was planning on doing a TT swap among other things and general tinkery stuffs.... ( BTW i bought this with a Big end Bearing gone.....)

Well i started to strip her down and upon removing the R/h Wing i found this abomination!

Then obviously having to remove the engine and planning on stripping the underside i start removing the engine beginning with the Fluids and find a certain something peeping out the sump! (the dipstick i knew about when buying the car and the look on the owners face when i asked him where the rest of it was was priceless)

This next one isnt detrimental but i thought, at least I've gained something so far from buying this.....

Now for my favorite surprise ive had yet...

How is the electric power steering coming along? Thinking of doing the same to mine, or similar anyways.

Well it runs and is good i just have some niggles with the pressure relief but if im honest i have bigger problems at the moment such as why am i not getting a pressure reading from my oil gauge while cranking???

this is what i need to sort. haha

Very nice mate when are you usually down at your unit? Will have to pay you a visit :-)

come over when you want baz...as long as im there lol.

Steve, as youve been interested in the PS system i thought id plod along with that and hopefully have remedied my pressure relief system.

This is my gauge and pressure relief valve. Gauge is 0-1000 PSI and relief valve is a 'light' hydraulic valve from flowfit with pressure values from 10-150 bar iirc.

looks fairly 'industrial' but i bought a steering system that doesnt already have a relief valve built in but is variable speed instead. ooops.

Ill get it fitted asap and give you some feed back.

But i must say without being able to run my engine it makes it SO good to be able to turn the PS pump on with just batt power as this thing is a pig to steer with my Equips on.

Well i got the gauge and pressure relief valve fitted today and had some fun with it.

Operating pressure of the pump is around 100psi. When i start using the steering and putting a load on it it varies but at full lock im getting around 500psi which starts to slow the pump down.

I have a poor video where i show it starting up, me trying to show how loud it is at the drivers position (as its quite a high pitch whine) and then i get my pressure relief line in a tray to show operation after a few tweaks

I must say the constant whine may not be for everyone but i have it on a switch and relay to allow me to turn it off when im cruising about and also fitting an engine driven pump in the engine bay was nearly impossible without chopping stuff up.

Well finally...It starts!

Video to follow but having issue uploading it onto crappy photo bucket.

This is a huge hurdle for me and my zed as i bought this engine not knowing anything other than what this Mexican guy in Canada had to say about it.

Its not running 100% as i have a standalone ECU and im reaching the point where i need a 'pro' to do the next few steps.

Next Thing is to Get it mapped and MOT'd, don't know which one first. Then Respray, and finally Interior, along with a huge amount of little jobs in between

so yeah, video to follow....

PS: My videoing skills are below average and it doesnt have the majority of the Exhaust fitted.

Just a few pics of it currently as i haven't uploaded any in a while.

A hole i have had to make for the Intake manifold.

I am pretty sure you can fit the VH in with only having to remove the bonnet bracing rather than the skin also. Nice work...but man, your choice of socks! SHOCKING!

Yeah you can, but I'm using the stock exhaust manifold and wasn't willing to chop my lovely powder coated subframe so for now the bonnet has to suffer. I have another bonnet so once it's all functional I'll take measures to get a better fit. I'm not a fan of bonnet bulges but at the moment it's function over form.

Luckily you can't see my array of Xmas jumpers I've been wearing all year round to work on my car haha!!

I wouldn't want it so it's merely a functional suggestion but you could have a bonnet rake euro style, that would give you about an inch of clearance without cutting holes. Alternatively a power bulge, think 70s muscle. There's a very subtle one there from stock so simply (I say simply it's not) accentuate what's there from factory.

Well today has been a success in some cases!

Since the last video the following has happened.

- The car produced copious amounts of smoke along with a fairly rough and high idle at around 1700rpm.

- Kenlowe 14" heavy duty fan installed. It pushes a lot of air!

- Coolant filled and bled

- Some exhaust cans donated by Lee dent which i chopped it to fit my SWB (they are slightly divorced too).

- Found a huge vacuum leak in the intake manifold which i remedied to now get to the point of the video soon to be linked below.

Its all back together as shown below and is hopefully ready for an MOT.

It isnt cleaned up yet as there is a a lot of tape marks on the bodywork where I protected it when ive been moving it around.

Also yes the rear end is in primer as i welded up the tailgate to go for the smooth look.

With regards to the air leak i had. It was quite a significant leak which was around where the equivalent of this engines lower plenum bolts to the head. That being sorted i had to play around with some fuel settings to get it to start so i can play with the idle.

This engine doesn't have an idle control valve, i am setting the base idle of the end stop on the throttle body.

As i said in the video it was slightly rich and there was quite a lot of condensation which cleared. The AFR was adjusted to a more suitable level.

From here the next steps are

- Fix the coolant leak i seemed to have gained

- Determine whether my alternator is shot as im not getting a noticeable increase in voltage between battery and engine idling.

- Fine tune my timing as base timing is set but for higher RPM i need to set a delay to compensate for system component delays.

Then MOT.

Cheers.

Coming along nicely :)

Cheers,

Need to iron out a few things before it goes anywhere on the road but progress is being made.

Great work mate, it took me over 10 attempts before I even got my V8 driving vaguely normally - much easier with a carb than mapping so i don't envy you! :)

Cheers! it is so good being able to stand near it while it idles without running away with burning eyes.

I think i may have found the problem with my alternator too...i dont think my exciter coil is getting a 12v batt feed...duh

I think ill put together a list of all my mods as i just seem to add bits without any pics or info on what ive done haha, no very informative.

Feel like a child again doing this but sifting though some stuff i seemed to have stumbled upon a xmas present not so well hidden. As a result i took some pics, hopefully she wont find out i did this or she would probably send it back :(

Haha anyone got a steering wheel boss going? ;)

This is a 350mm nardi deep corn.
