  • We did a video earlier this week, the Z hasn't been out the garage since July 2020. So happy for this, this is miles away from professional video, and the guy who helped me with the drone and editing,

Today nothing, but I did take the Zed out for a little drive the other day - and stopped for a couple of pics. Any excuse 😉

Who's knows Irelands future may have kph speed limits and Monopoly money in store yet.

Drove it. (Yesterday) Opened the garage door and eased her into the Autumn sunlight then after a fill up of BP's finest it was a quick three figure dash down the M2 to visit family and home again. You forget how good these cars are when you don't drive them for a few weeks.

So true Gary!

I used mine all over the weekend - after a 4 week break - and it felt great blasting along in the autumn sunshine:cool:

From a quick trip to Beaconsfield early Saturday morning, followed by a visit to the RHS Wisley Gardens on Sunday, the Zed was performing well. Made me realise just how much I'd missed it.....

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Been out getting the box off today.

Forgot to take any progress pictures but the box is no longer attached to the engine, so box is ready to drop.

However got a problem with the starter in which the top nut has shredded the thread of the stud somehow and so just spins and doesn't loosen. The problem is that the loom loops around the starter so it box won't come out.

Do I cut the loom? It looks like both ends go up to into the engine bay and are too far out of reach to detach. So if I cut the loom with all the sensors on (speed, neutral, reverse), would that cause me an issue putting it back on?

LOL - but NI is still GB £s and MPH mate....

It is right now...have you not read the sun or listened to the BBC recently. The end of the world is nigh.

It's part of the Alternator harness iirc. We will use your auto loom. However you can just unplug all those connections at the box end. Try to remove the starter. Try applying a flat blade screwdriver behind the bolt head as you undo, should lift out. The bell housing issue will take minutes to repair.

I have unplugged them, they are hanging down in the picture, but the main loom (thick thing covered in heatwrap that comes down from the engine) seems to split, with one to the connectors, and then another bit carries on back towards the engine.

And I have tried my damn hardest to get the starter off, flat blade behind prying the starter to put tension on the nut so that it might catch the thread has already been tried. I figure it would be a lot easier and give me more options to try and do it when the box it off the car.

Where's Jeff tt?

Can he give you any pointers

Haha, I tried Mr Dent and he gave some brief info and said will respond back later as he's at the pub (on a Wednesday?? Lol)

Anyway, I'm sure it won't be the end of the world, as I and people have said I'll probably cut the the loom, but I just want to make 100% sure I'm not going to cut a bit I might need.

So is everyone saying that the connectors and speed sensor are the same for auto manual so it doesn't matter if I cut the bit where it goes back into the engine?? As I said I don't want to make a big job having to resolder stuff.

You need a nut cracker my friend! They're amazing and cheap!

I don't recall them being different. You not got a spare speed sensor from an auto to compare? Why can't you remove the starter?

I think I do, but a drill will probably do me fine

Is this the breaker? I hope you have plans for that rust otherwise :scared:

Oh boy oh boy that's not the worst of it, I probably better not scare you with any more pictures of the rust lol.

Yep my breaker

Lol is that a rusty sump?

Rusty Sump sounds like a porn star name! Is the Rusty Sump plug rusted over or removed, I can't tell?

Yep sump plug still inserted because Well... It's rusty and tight.

So the starter is connected by a 17mm bolt on the bottom (removed), and a 17mm nut at the top. The nut has stripped the thread of the stud so that it will just spin, not get any looser or tighter. When I get it off the car I'll have another go but quite limited to get power tools to it when it's in the car.

Erm I've literally already answered this.... nut splitter. Don't know what you mean by a drill will do fine, they do not do the same thing at all!

Clue to what they do is kinda in the name, you can split the nut clean in two in about 2 minutes so it will just fall off, and it won't even damage the stud thread. I believe this is exactly what you're looking for?!

Particularly useful for ball joint nuts when you can't stop it spinning (and the new joint comes with a nut!)

I can't believe I ever didn't have one

I did read what you said, but first of all I'm going to drill both side of the nut and pry it off, if not then nutcracker I guess.

Well it's your time not mine, sounds like a complete waste of effort to me. I don't even know how you would drill a nut off, sounds mental to me and God know what damage you could do if it slips off or whatever

That's odd. Everyone I've ever seen it's been two bolts. If it's a stud with a nut then do as Chris suggested and get the nut splitter. It will be off in minutes with no damage. Doing it the way you plan is a recipe for a headache and swearing and a cock up.

I took mine into High Wycombe on my Saturday morning Sainsbury's run.....

......And then stopped off at Hughenden Manor to take a few pictures of my Zed in Autumn's glory.....

I thought it would serve to kick off our latest competition:
