A good sign of getting old is when you start saving thin pieces of wood for stirring paint, or empty icecream containers to store shite, and empty coffee jars because their useful for something.............what !

Why Did You Buy Your Zed
I noticed Zeds years ago, thought how low and wide they looked, but did not realise that they were twin turbo and bloody quick. Last year my son bought one and had the chance to drive it on a few occasions.....that was it, it became a must have. Bought one off Ebay without even seeing it apart from the photo, 40K miles and turned out the auto box was 'unpredictable' when booting it. Swopped it for a manual box, fitted JWT chip and boost jets and whoooooooooooosh. It goes like f**k and returns 25 mpg on Optimax. (£1.03 per litre at motorway services)

wireing for a manual auto gearbox?
Steve, Forget the rubbish about changing the alternater loom and get in touch with Jeff T at Zedworld. Me and my son converted mine to manual, and Jeff sorted the wiring out an 20 minutes, without changeing any looms. The inhibitor switch thing can be overcome by playing with the switch mechanism at the bottom of the gear lever. That will get you going.

help me again please
Graham, the torque converter becomes the flywheel in an auto so the existing flywheel will need to be remove. Two other differences you will have to cope, the first is the bolts for the torque converter mounting plate are shorter on an auto, so don't mix them up, and the second problem is the spigott bush that fits in the end of the crankshaft, The auto one is larger than the manual. You may be able to swap but you usually damage them getting out, so best but new before you start. By the way, you shoul leave the torque converter with the gearbox in the car, and just disconnect the mounting plate from it, 3 bolts I think from memory. You will also need some sort of lifting plate to fix on top the engine to enable easy manouvering when its going in. Good luck mate.

The Car has failed
Hey Bird, the welding is the big bug here because the cill areas are quite complex metalwork due to them providing extra strength to the body for the targa tops, so welding will not be straight forward. If you can keep the price down on this, the rest aint so bad. I would be tempted to clean your brake pipes up with some wire wool and see just how bad they are. If they are bad, measure them up and try a few motor shops that make them up for a price. just go for basic piping not the fancy material type. And then there is the ball joint, you might be able to fit that yourself. Washers headlights etc are easy. Stay positive and try to assess the total costs of getting the car back on the road.

repair costs
Does your mechanic have agood knowledge of Zeds, because the cills are totally different than any other car due to the targa roofs. They are part of the vehicle stiffening / chassis structure and will need repairing by someone who knows what he is doing. Is it a manual or an auto, if an auto the gearbox will fail with weeks of driving due to the plates drying out. If its a manual, it will also require a new clutch. I would think that after standing for two years, you would be into rebuilding most of all the suspension, brakes, steering joints etc., plus problems with the turbos once they start rotating again........ouch. I hope you have a big wallet because you will need one.

SW 2006 meets Suggestions and Comments
This might sound a bit chavy but how about some sort of treasure hunt when the weather warms up. Meet middayish, give out the clues, and then have a final finishing time early evening for a steak and a pint. If the clues were arranged differently on every sheet, everyone would head off in different directions, and you would avoid convoys through villages and any agro. It could involve wifes, partners, kids or even the motherinlaw..............who said that.

Price of Genuine parts
The worse thing is that they are 'inconsistant'. I recently bought a fuel pump relay from Nissan at a cost of £12m and 4 small bolts which hold the gear stick gaiter to the centre console, £8.70. How do they come up with these prices.

Anyone down here up for a trip.....a mini convoy.

broke down-non member
I reckon the club should get rubber gloves made with 300ZX.co.uk printed on the back so when you found someone at the roadside with the bonnet up and swearing, you could instanly tell if he was a member or not. You could perhaps include emergency telephone numbers of either techy type guys in the area, for advice, or a taxi service so they could get to a bus/train station and get home.

FAO - Old Zed
Hi MGH, I am not very good with shortening these Ebay links down but here it is. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=8034107649&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AVRI&rd=1 Both me and my son bought them for our Zeds and they are 'BRILLIANT' you can go out at night with confidence, one small snag tho', they make the main beam look crap afterwards.

To import or not?????
Hi Neil, If you can get a 94 TT Zed delivered to the UK for £1600 it would be a bargain, and I would go for it providing you get alook at the auction sheet which shows the condition of the car. They grade them according to condition, I think it is 1 to 5, with 5 being the best. The usual scoring for a really good car is 4 or 4.5 which would have low mileage, good bodywork and usually everthing working as it should. I have a mate who imports Bongos (people carriers by Mazda) and although he buys 1995's to avoid the SVA test, the auction price for a good one is about £2400 but he has to pay shipping on top which is about £1100 per vehicle. your price of £1600 sounds very cheap. I would be interested if its true.

why are 300zx brakes rubbish
The only complaint I have is when braking down from a high speed in an emergency, the ABS reaction is violant. The first time I experienced it, I stopped the car and checked the wheel nuts for tightness. Apart from that I think they are acceptable for normal road use.
