  1. I ran exactly the combo that the listers want Mines ECU and HKS ALC2. result running std boost dead gearbox 5,000 miles later. Yes the drive was more urgent and gear changes were faster but..........the box went pop probably faster than it would have. Chris
  2. thanks guys, i am tempted to go the hair dryer route but was wondering if anyone does this as a pro guarenteeing not to screw it up I think i would rather entrust this job to someone who has done loads of times before. plan a) if anyone knows a window tint remover in the north west then please recommend, if not I will have a go with the hair dryer as plan b) Thanks Chris C
  3. Ho can i get my tinting removed without screwing up my rear window de-mister etc. Anyone know a pro in the north west who can remove my chav-film from my car?
  4. Mate, i live in preston but take my car to geoff at zedworld. (tamworth) There is no way I would leave a Z in anything but the hands of a specialist. Nissan main dealers have not got a clue what they are doing on a Z. Ask yourself what is the average leangth of service of their mechanics? How long will it have been since they worked on Z's in any numbers? The Z is a very complicated car to work on and most of the knowledge needed has been lost by the main dealers. Drive your car to a specialist (if it drives) if not get it there by truck and let them give it a full healthcheck. Believe me you will save a bundle of money in the long run. The key to enjoying a Z is driving it as it was designed to be driven not worrying about what might go wrong. My 'mint' import had a horror story cambelt (saved in the nick of time), dodgy wheel bearing, centre propshaft bearing on the way out, front subframe that was loose, and some broken sensors. :headvswal The upside of doing what you must is you will not believe the performance of a well sorted Z :) :) :) Best of Luck mate Chris
  5. All my gears work perfectly in non kickdown mode and it shifts smoothly through the box at all other times whether in overdrive or not. The issue is in overdrive at 95 - 100 and above kickdown results in loss of drive to wheels and revs to redline. When I back off and feed in the pedal more gently it does what I want it to. Of course it is dangerous not to have the response when you need it so I want to fix it. Could it be a faulty throttle position sensor? I don't want a manual conversion because all my other cars are manual and i want the fast-auto-GT-ness that is the 300zx auto Chris
  6. Ok so on my private road when i kick down real fast at about 95 to 100mph the engine revs to the red line with no drive from the autobox. (new 10,000 miles ago). Backing off the throttle and feeding it in gently brings the drive back. I have done the whole oil level thing and am beginning to think it is something to do with my Speedo KPH / MPH converter but am really clutching at straws here. Anyone had this problem themselves and solved it? Thanks Chris
  7. Just to pile on I did the pro-drive weekend when i bought my missus her RX8 :) did not realise it was part of the purchase price so have no idea of the stand alone cost. I know that various manufacturers use them:- Bentley, Ferrari, Ford when you buy a performance model you are offered it as an add-on or in the RX8 case in with the purchase price. I thought it was good because of mix:- High speed track, handling circuit (the one they use to develop their handling packages), Skid pan and Advanced road session. I think they are picky because not only does the car have to be in top nick, (otherwise they would have to be scrutineering ever car) but I could not believe the spectrum of 'joe public' that came along. It totally changed my opinions. Up until that point I thought that anyone who bought a performance orientated car would be broadly similar in background and i guess ability. Ho wrong was I. I used to race both cars and bikes starting in karts when i was little so I have been driving things on-the-limit and for daily transport most of my adult life. What I could not believe was how the pro-drive weekend revealed how bad some folks are at driving. It was scary. you would think that people buying RX8's (which lets face it is a fairly focussed sports car) were 'drivers'............oooooooooo no! Some idiots complained at the end saying that they had no idea it would cost them so much in petrol and made the edges of their tyres go "bobbly and wear down so much!" I kid you not........ I would wish you well with a Z focussed session but I fear it may teach us too much about who is at the wheel of so many Z's !!!! Seriously the best value for money for me was when I took the Z to the nurburgring:- 1. On the way watch unlimited autobahn savvy germans drive (roadcraft) 2. Take 3 laps on my own (current state) 3. Hire a ring-meister to drive with me and give me tips......(future state) 4. Extra laps on my own. Best money I ever spent. Best Chris C
  8. The purpose of the system is much misunderstood. The system mimics the racing technique of the 'scandanavian flick'. a momentary flick of opposite lock before turn-in to un-load the suspension before the turn. results in a more settled flatter, smoother cornering. A massive safety by-product of the system is that of emergency evasive swerves or lane changes being much less likely to result in a loss of control. It has saved my bacon big style once when a bit of 4" by 4" wood fell off a lorry on the M6 and i was safe thinking how did I miss that?????!!!!!. A well maintained HICAS system will never feel woolly. If it feels woolly and your HICAS parts are in good condition then its not HICAS its probably shot subframe bushes. Some people point out "So why do racers lock it out then?" It is because in the course of a season many changes will be made to the set-up of the car trying different geometries for different tracks. From the off with the Z no one knew what associated changes would be needed with hicas to make sure that it 'complimented' all the possible geometry settings of a race season as no one had the time or money to figure it out thus locking it out or removing it altogether became the racers way of running a Z. My advice If yours in poor condition and your too chav to get it sorted lock it up / remove it and forget about it. If it is in good nick leave it, as it may save your life one day. I would liken removing good hicas to removing an airbag. Even if you never have to have it do that for you (fingers crossed) it is certainly making you a smoother driver than you are again IF it is in good working as designed condition which is a big if on a 15+ year old car CHris
  9. I will concede and consider myself put right on the le mans engine issue but my info was that Steve Millen had very very close support from the factory as he does to this day in his US nissan franchise. I hear the argument that the UK are top tuners deep in the bowels of motorsport and we are told that we are world leaders in formula one etc but i simply do not buy it. It sounds too much like a re-contructionist "we invented it all" that every nationality likes to say. It was only when i'd travelled a bit and worked in other countries did i realise every country has a guy who invented the telephone, electric light four valve cylinder heads, supercharger etc. etc. Every nation teaches history through its own eyes. The americans have to believe that it was one of them who taught the japanese quality (deming - ingnired at home) for them to accept obviously superior product. Like you I know for a fact that Cosworth make jun autos pistons in what are niche market volumes just like Chambon of france make their big bore kit long throw crankshafts and rods etc. but dont big them up. They are mere contractors making stuff to the customers specifications. Don't kid yourself they are the major 'tuners'. The the ones doing all the development work, trial and error, investment in money etc. are JUN auto. They have their own machine shop to fabricate and modify the bits they need to help them on their quest they get it right then place orders for the kit to their spec. I submit you cannot even call your self a 'tuner' unless you are designing and developing your own bits. Same story with the indy car engines and bodies assertion sounds nice but we are mere contractors who because of our size don't mind making niche market sized volumes. If us brits were playing such a big role then our companies names would be on the side of the engines and the cars. They are not. The only exception i will cede to is pro-drive on what they have done for scoobies but heres a thing. I spent some time at pro-drive last year at the time they were developing the handling package for the RX8. Let me tell you what it consists of:- Wheels designed then made by.....you know who, bilstein shocks selected from a catalogue and eibach springs and A.R. Bars selected off their website total development work in hours? oooh I'd say about 12. So the japs know nothing about tuning? one word Honda. look at what they were doing with race engines in the 60's. Look at what mazda have done with the rotary engine that ****el / NSU could not. Does anyone still really believe that the japs don't have any ideas of their own? If so you have clearly never worked with jap automotive guys. I sat in on a meeting many years back and watched British engineers in awe of their honda 'partners' as they coached every step of the design of a great 'british' engine. The brits almost wet their pants when they then went on to show them how to make it and make money building it too. There are no UK tuners that deserve that title, probably just one or two good engineers the rest are what the japanese would call 'catalogue' engineers. Agree 100% bout 'drab racing' Agree 100% about Z owners 'tuning' quests Agree 100% that to put an RB in a Z is interesting but probably a 'backward step' respectfully chris
  10. lets hope it wasn't jade goody on her way back from re-hab or her indian emissary work as you may have to now negotiate the hello magazine fee for the photo shoot. You know when she comes to ask your forgiveness for her 'car crime' phase. Bless them crimminals they can't help it it was their deprived childhood............. Chris standing up for perps rights in the face of all the prior law and order victim biased rants before. Seriously I'll give you a tenner mate and if everyone else on the list does lets hire a private detective so you can find the toe rag wot did it. LIke vince vega says in pulp fiction messing with a guys car is just not on
  11. Your making my points for me really so i think we 'violently agree':- Rich kid buys the Jun car after they are done with it and runs it. fair play buy it and ride it but deserves mag articles? Top gear? nah! My whole point (badly made perhaps), was we are light years behind in terms of the freshness of our 'tuning' stories. So now someone has bought it again and re-furbed it is it better? running better times? have we added anything to the mix, donen anything new or innovative? When is the last time you picked up a mage and went wow that is genuinely new and breakthrough for this or that model. To my mind for the Z that would be that shift-at-will thing. "fastest in europe......." So what! says I. Lets see a league table of times set by the same cars worldwide by year since the model launch. I bet we make for sorry reading and are at least 5yrs or more off the pace." My challenge is can any UK tuner claim to be 'world class' and have a rep that they have forged from their own work and development?? :ets see when the new GTR hits the UK who will be the ones pushing the envelope? How many Uk tuners are doing the 350Z even though its now been around for an age? --- None, they are waiting to copy what has already been done. My worry is that because of our lack of 'real tuners' we in the UK seem to be unecessarily re-learning what other people have already been, done and got the T-shirt for years ago. I cannot see how buying an ex-tuners car and re-furbing it makes it magazine article worthy. Why not just re-run the orginal jap mag coverage? Honestly I bet the JUN guys just think WTF when they thing what has happened to their 'retired' project. Anyway back on topic (sorry i took us off) Agree 100% bout the RB / VG engine but believe that all of the above causes the wrong headed decision to undertake such a project. Have we actually lost many of the valuable lessons learned from the past or the chance to truly innovate? I mean the homage that is given to the RB engine is largely built on its recent mythology and before that the VG mill was seen as a brilliantly more capable engine. On launch the RB was seen in the industry as a step backwards due to more cost conscious times. Agree that no-one seems to spending serious wonga on a VG based tune because I bet there is no one in the UK who could take it on exactly because my assertion is that most UK tuners are 'painting-by-numbers' artists copying earlier great works. "pack-up-and-go-home" said an earlier quote. I am not saying that each punters 300zx upgrade journey is not a worthwhile journey but that upgrading a 300 should by now be pretty much a 'menu based' project as it has all pretty much been done before and you just pick your spec and build your car to your likes. Now to at least bring us somewhat up to date where can I get a carbon rear diffuser to fit the stock back-end ???? Chris C
  12. Andy I did a 2000 mile trip to the nurburgring and back in mine and blew a turbo casing :headvswal on my last lap (only running 15psi so looks like it was badly installed    . Anyway my Z got me all the way home with no drama even with one bust turbo so as long as it was freshly primed I 'd go anywhere in my Z. trip sounds like a dream in a Z. Wind up that big GT car and let it do what it was designed for. Good luck mate
  13. Anyone living in UK for 99% of their driving LOL Chris C
  14. EVEN if you compare it to lambo and fezza the 300zx was and is an AWESOME car for its time. I have a 1994 ferrari and although in many ways it is beyond the 300zx in some things (e.g first composite major structure on a production car) in real terms there are many areas were I can state 100% without emotion and hype that the 300 is simply a better car... Now if i was being 100% fair and comparing it to a 1989 launched ferarri or lambo i bet you'd be hard pressed to call it at all. 300 beats fezza in............ 1. reliability and engineering - light years ahead (the ferrari has no HICAS, less sophisticated ECU, ABS, Stability plus leaky doors, boot.........) 2. handling and ease of driving fast (more forgiving) 3. Wheels (yes even std better like-for-like than ferrari) 4. quality of assembly finish (way way way better but then only 149 of the ferrari model made in RHD) 5. financial cost of ownership (don't even go there) 6. Social cost of ownership (Z comes with few if any social consequences) Chris C
  15. Sometimes i get pretty jaded about the UK jap import tuning scene as it tends to be just treading a well worn path that was made by the japanese themselves many years previous. I stopped buying the UK jap mags because they rarely cover zeds and actually most just read like a shopping report followed by and "it was fettled to run on UK fuel by joe lock-up with a dyno who was last decade seen running cozzeez at X bar boost". blah blah blah Mr X bought this hyper rare car from japan and it has a kin big turbo and loads of bits that the wangan racer previous owner fitted years ago blah blah JDM blah blah before he was done with it. I mean the dolts that bought that jun hyper lemon skyline must have had rocks in their heads. watching them at santa pod is like going to see a tyson fight i.e. "your fookin 15 years too late bud". So what exactly have the UK owners done or any UK tuning shop that is truly groundbreaking enough to feature in a mag? So at least even though I think fitting the RB26 was pretty pointless at least it was a bit different. What we do know is Nissan won Le Mans with the VG engine std rods and crank and if you want to see how far behind we are in tuning terms read the following posts and then check the date. Most VG's go bang because they have been run into the ground by a succession of idiots who runthem without maintenance and then an equally big idiot ups the boost, fits the goodies and expects a 15year old engine to just take it......... Unless we are talking about fitting a V8 or perhaps a sequential 6 speed gearbox i think it has already all been said or done in a Z tuning wise. uh must have eaten too much read meat today Chris
  16. kewl sounds like there will be a few Z's then. I am camping at karting nord Chris
  17. Dave, Did 8.59 at the ring in my TT auto running 1 bar and the usual mods. My racelogic traction control helps iron out the autos quirks ;) I love the auto but thats because my other toys are all manwell not sure I'd feel the same if it was my only sports car. Autobox went bang and lots have or are about to (think 60,000miles). this is because the design was at the time at the cutting edge of what could be achieved. manwell conversion is about the same cost as a re-conned box so take your choice. Chris
  18. Which brand do you recommend? Group buy anyone? LOL Chris
  19. if you were a sad e:bay sleuth you could check out his last item purchased was a penis pump.......... Thus confirming the stereo type that his testarossa is a big red penis extension that is compensating for his pencil-like dick. Amazing thing is no matter what women or other guys 'say' let me tell you when they are sat in one fezza = moistness from even the most hardened "not into cars" mistress. Ferrari getting you normally-out-of-your-league pussy for over 50 years
  20. Ahem, Don't wanna stir it up but in my mind the Z is absolutely an 80's car. the team started its design work in the thick of the 80's and whilst it is no doubt a classic design it has too many 80's influenced cues especially from the side and 3/4 views. At least nissan have moved on and not stood still. Thinks about porsche who went back to a pre-war design and then constantly re-worked in an attempt to see the triumph of engineering over physics. I think 90's cars were boring but some new cars are at last getting interesting. New supra hybrid is a real breakthrough and i think the GTR will have its work cut out.
  21. maybe its to take oil out of the dry sump in case you over fill it...........! ;)
  22. All :nono: As a ferrari and a Zed owner let me assure you this is not always the case. Must be RED ferrari owners!!!!!! Chris
