  1. Just a quicky can you tell from the outside of an ECU whether its auto or manual. I have two one with a big 22 on it and one with a big 23 on it. My understanding is an auto ECU can run in a manual but not the other way round. Thanks Chris
  2. Mate you need to do this upgrade as soon as poss. Luke at the ZED centre does an upgrade that simulaneously upgrades your autobox and engine oil cooler. Even so your box will go bang at some stage if most cars will only get to 60 to 80 k miles ou upgrade the power it will hasten its demise. Do not do anything to kill it faster like fitting and HKS ALC module (quicker shifting but at the expense of longevity). Start saving for the inevitable manual conversion. Most of us have had to go that route in the end.
  3. Team, I am looking for some set-up help here on my travels I have managed to pick up an original set of Mine's Suspension for my twin turbo. Manufactured in japan to a custom mines specification they are really really nice units. What I know so far is that the spring rates are as follows 3.2 - 4.5kg for Front and 3.0 - 4.0kg. for Rear. They are 32-way adjustable for damping and appear to have 3 pre-load settings via a circlip design on the shock body. Does anyone else have these units on their car as i am looking for some starter settings for fast-road driving. Thanks in advance
  4. This is an urban myth mate they run fine on Optimax. I ran a mines (considered the most aggressive) for 2 years with incident and always sporting driving ;) I also have the Blitz ECU which again runs sweet on optimax
  5. I have a few of these japanese 'tuner' ECU's they are very popular in japan as they provide a very safe way to run higher boost, basic mods etc. Yes it will make your power and torque better than a stock ECU running higher boost. the stock units have very conservative maps in by comparison. The units I have are (Peak 'HP' figures I have seen with my apexi multichecker when fitted):- Trend corporation (413hp) Mines (410hp) Blitz (405hp) Tomei (407hp) I also have a stock ECU socketed with a Zedworld chip in it. (402hp) (all readings taken whilst running 1 bar boost, stillen intercoolers, Blitz intake and de-catted exhaust system) Generally these ECU's have the fuel and ignition maps are optimised for better than stock performance and they are sold with generic tuning mods in mind e.g. Stock engine up-rated boost Induction kit After market exhaust up rated intercoolers These kind of ECU's are still very popular in japan for current models e.g. 350z Evo's scooby's etc. Unlike some cowboy chips these 'named' exchange ECU's are done to a very high standard and do not remove for example the safety maps that Nissan put in for good reason. They are one of the prime creators of a tuning houses brand in japan after their demo cars. Note none of my 'named' units are actually 'socketed' instead they have fully soldered in chips and are sealed with a layer of gunk to stop anyone trying to remove the chip. This is because each tuning house wanted to protect its maps against copying and also the deal was that as you upped the modification level of your car they would exchange the ECU for the next one as long as you had not broken the seals. I have always meant to dyno these ecu's back-to-back for comparison as there are differences and i would be fascinated to see by how much. Current market value of these ECU's is around 250 quid via e:bay Also beware the urban myth that they only work with jap higher RON fuel. They all work fine with optimax. My engine only blew when i put removed the mines ECU (my fave for spread of power) and put the zedworld chip in. I am not saying that was the only reason as it was as hot as hell that day at silverstone and i had a helmet on so could not hear anything until it was too late
  6. I have got an auto box just becoming available that had a Ztech re-build done 10,000 miles ago. It comes with the Z centre oil cooler upgrade too.. PM me if interested. I reckon it will be the best 2nd hand box you can buy as they are all 15+ years old now and unless you can find one with receipts to show you it has been done you are buying a time bomb. PM me for details if you decide to do the simple swap.
  7. Just went to get the missus her two monthly dose of oil for her RX8 and i was given free shell synthetic. It seems shell are off-loading inventory for some reason. Yippee make hay while the sun shines.
  8. yeah have done that conversation with Cosworth. Facts are Jun own the Intellectual Property (IP) for their piston design. They developed their piston spec from basic cosworth forgings in the early 90's. They arrived at a high power road design during the development of their bonneville record breaking 300zx (eventually producing over 1,000hp and 263mph top speed). Note unlike many so-called tuning shops Jun actually have extensive workshop facilities for development purposes but not the capacity to mass produce items. So they did a deal with Cosworth. When I spoke to cosworth they said they don't 'officially' offer VG30DETT pistons and have no plans to. It seems that the IP deal they did with JUN was for multiple years as part of a non-compete type deal. They also said that Tomei's pistons are sourced by them in a similar deal. Interestingly Cosworth ARE finally now entering the Japanese performance market as the ford gravy train draws to a halt but only for newer models. One assumes they did these kind of deals with the japanese tuners when they were something happening 'over there' and both had their own market to themselves. The result is that Cosworth now make a 350Z kit and market it direct from the cosworth site. So......... If you want Cosworth / JUN pistons for your 300zx the only way to get them is they get made in northhampton to a drawing and knowledge that came from japan over 16 years ago, they then get shipped to japan and put in a JUN box with JUN fitting instructions, shipped back to the UK, via a dealer that gets a mark-up too. With all those hand-offs, shipping and everyone making a margin or collecting TAX it is easy to see now why wiseco are £440 and JUN are £1,300 So what is a man to do? Luckily I can play the game in reverse...... Given the dollar is over 2:1 to the £ and I go to the US every month I will probably work it the other way and get a set of wisecos sent to my pittsburgh office for less than they would cost me in the UK. I sense a big increase in my baggage over the next few trips! Crazy world eh?
  9. Yeah but they are a bespoke JUN design and not the same as the cosworth own brand ones. My sources tell me cosworth are on par with Wiesco.....
  10. So.......... It seems my plan will be to run is to run the Z1 600r T28 based turbos, Stillens titanium rods and JE / Arias pistons. (or do cosworth do Z32 pistons?) I will fit a metal head gasket and go with the 555 injectors and appropriate re-map. ARP bolts on the re-build. I already have big ass intercoolers, exhaust and intake etc. Crank and mains left as-is or replace? Chris C
  11. Yes Z32 rods are forged and the Jun guys told me the stock crank is the one they used at Le Mans so leave it well alone. That leaves the pistons as the weak link that seems to be the balance of opinion here but what do others think? Chris
  12. any piston brand clearly better than another? Also in the re-build doing the crankshaft main bearings is a right pain as its not until you know what colour code your stock bearings are that you can order your replacements. So my current thinking is leave the bottom end as is but do:- titanium rods (i can get them whilst stateside for amazingly low price) with wiesco pistons, metal head gasket and ARP bolts. Chris
  13. hmm penny wise and pound foolish...... I spent over £4,000 on my last powertrain and it still went bang! Would you re-bore? or just replace the stock pistons with forged items. Chris C
  14. I will do that if necessary as i can get titanium rods and std size forged pistons at the same time as the turbo kit but i must say i have had conflicting advice:- Some folks say do a rebuild as its 15 year old etc. others say "done loads of these and below 600bhp the standard internals are great even with an old engine." I do not want to have to pay later on but it will probably double the bill if i have to do stronger internals. Will go with the weight of opinion on this one as it comes in so team, To re-build or not re-build that is the question.........
  15. Guys, If any of you were at silverstone you will have seen my engine go spectacularly up in smoke during the final track session which was a real pisser as it was going real well. Anyway i have now got a replacement engine and gearbox with 33,000miles on them :D and have decided to start my quest for 500bhp+ and a manwell conversion. :hyper: I am in the process of sourcing the Z1 motorsport GT600 (T28 based) turbo kit and plan to do Z1 uprated throttle bodies, fuel rail injectors and chip the ECU accordingly. I already have stillen side mount intercoolers. My question is has anyone gone this route and if so what lessons learned can you share. Does anyone recommend a different turbo set up? I want to do the flywheel and clutch at the same time so what combo will be best for this kind of output. Also is 500bhp a realistic target on stock internals or can i reliably get more? If so what is the limit? It won't be a daily driver but it will get used. So many questions i know but i had to do this rather than scrap her. Chris
  16. or is it the other way around. I seem to remember you do not need to change and auto ecu when doing a manwell conversion
  17. What exactly were the upgrades to the manual gearbox over the Z's life? What years did they happen?
  18. what year did the series 3 gearbox come in and what are the differences?
  19. Hi Guys, I killed my ZTT at silverstone sunday :( As i travel to the US at least once per month I will definitely be needing parts from you for the re-build. :hyper: Now if only i could get one of your built engines into my checked luggage !! Welcome to our world
  20. Guys i went through a 6 month process changing top links, tension rods, bushes, dampers etc. clunking was still there. Turned out to be the front sub-frame loose  one bolt was already almost out and the rest were loose. Seems like it happens after 15 years-ish of use so one that needs to be checked by everyone one suspects. Chris
  21. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NISMO-LM-GT2-18-INCH-ALLOYS-SKYLINE-350Z-300ZX_W0QQitemZ200106249580QQihZ010QQcategoryZ28648QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem Tasty 300zx period wheels and i can vouch they look awesome on a Z Chris C
  22. neither would I unless.......... I fitted race logic traction control to the Z last year and with my Toyo's no one passed me at the ring when it started raining. What would have been scary as hell actually turned into a big ego boost for me :) Not the same story when it was dry though :wack: Chris
  23. 99 spec rear lights AND fronts make a silver Z look totally contemporary. Best cosmetic mod for a Z by far!!!! 99 spec fronts also mean no dodgy troublesome HID installs either. Just factory quality and instant fire up............. :D Chris
  24. A 300zx scalextric car? My lads and I have just built a rulin' touge drift circuit for our drift edition 350Z scalextric and they asked me if they ever did a 300zx? So come on you anoraks.............. PS scalextrix is as we all know wack until....... you get the drift cars which do not fly off and if you overcook it you just get to drive the opposite way until you can spin it back the right way. hell i am even doing do-nuts !!!! :hyper: :hyper: :hyper: Chris (11 again)
