my intentions are to remove all arms, suspension and springs and refurb, obviously its possible to paint up the non moving parts in heat resistant paint , but is there a way to polish up the springs and suspension as they are aftermarket parts and would be a shame to be replaced

i think u'd struggle 2get a low miles decent golf for under a grand, lagunas a good possibility i had a mk1 laguna which was as solid as a tank but when i stuck to renault and got a 1.9dci megane everything went wrong with it (including clutch,electrics) and they are only built outer the exact same parts.

car must have had a manual conversion at some time then!

the trick with a grinder is to break the disc in and take its corner away then u cant cut in2 the steel easily and then just let the grinder do the work 4u, absolute doddle once u know how!

as i weld 4 a living but never on a car, usually the best way is to turn your juice down low put a sealing run along, let it cool, then grind nearly flush and grind a slight groove where you want the run to lay, use anti spatter and turn juice up slightly 2get a better looking weld then you shouldnt get any overlap or undercut and also should'nt blow thru
