Wheel trims come under fair wear and tear with most rental companies (especially commercial) so I am surprised they pulled you up on that. I deal with all the rental companies (including Europcar) on a weekly basis too.

When I bought my first 300 I did the opposite to you, I bought a rat and saved it from certain death. Paid very little and ended up with a gem after a few grand in expenses. Had it sorted mechanically and then had body issues sorted out. Best to avoid any mods as you quite rightly said especially those with sideskirts because you will only find out what lies behind them if you pull them off! All the very nice 300s money can buy are not available at the moment. You can see them in the COTY poll!
