Your car insurance may also be invalid. The police can ask to see an MOT certificate for a vehicle that needs to have one. They also have access to the computerised records of MOT test results and can tell if the MOT certificate for your vehicle has expired. It is your responsibility as the vehicle owner to ensure that the due MOT test is carried out in time. You can use the peel off reminder sticker on the front of the certificate and put it in a place where you’ll be reminded of the expiry date. In my opinion the police have had ample time to examine your car. i cannot think of any excuse for retaining any of your personal property and you should go to either them or the garage and demand to have it returned (your property) don't forget that if your car is on police premises they will be charging you for removal and storage by the day and if it's on garage premises they will probably do the same so you will have to pay them to get it back. Odds are your insurance company won't pay this fee so keep on top of them, it's around £100 per day in some places.
