1992 NISSAN 300 Z HKS Motorsport
Just phone a few of the sellers, ask all the usual questions about its history, mileage, what documentation its still got etc, then go and check them out! There are some very good buyers guides and check lists on http://www.300zx.org.uk, some of the checks arent really practical (jacking up the car etc..) but most are really good points to check (mostly common sense car buying stuff and a few 300 specifics) make sure you see quite a few before making your mind up, Im sure everybody here will agree 300's arent the fastest selling cars in the world so you prob wont loose out by leaving a day or two's cooling off time! Once you've seen a handful you'll be able to spot a good one from a dog and make a slightly more informed decision!! With the help of the FAQ's on the internet I managed to choose a good'un.

How Much to Run
I still havent learned how to do this "driving sensibly" thing.. can somebody explain how? :D I'll be doing well with a tank then I spot a supra/scooby/whatever that needs to be raced and whallop there goes 1/4 of the tank in about 10 miles!!!

Advice on First Buy
If you go for an 89/90 you should get a lot of change from 5k (more money for mods!!!) I originally set out with a budget of 7k for a really late one but couldn't find one for love or money, so I settled for a 90 auto that had been really looked after. Dont pay more than 3.5k even for a very good example '90 (if its standard with no fancy bits), hammer them down, chances are they are sick of tyre kickers and test pilots and if you turn up with a bundle of notes they will probably just agree as they are glad to see a genuine buyer!! (I know the guy I got mine from was!) I paid 3k for a mechanically very sound 89 with 60k miles and a couple of minor mods. Which I think is a hell of a lot of car for 3k!

Bluetooth and the zed
I dont think its too idiotic to wear one while driving, yeah it looks stupid but Id prefer that to drilling holes all over the place to fit a "proper" kit. Comes off the moment I step outside the car though! I think the ultimate sin is bluetooth on head, phone in holster on one hip and PDA in holster on the other hip! like you are waiting for some wild west gadget shootout!!!

Respray!!!
Just booked my Z in for a bayside blue respray!! cant wait, it's going to look the nuts! it's gonna go soooo much faster when I get it back! Had anybody noticed body shops down south (i'm in hampshire) take the p1ss with thier quotes? It's about 500-600 cheaper for me to have the car shipped to nottingham, have the work done and shipped back than it will be to have it done locally! wasted about 3hrs driving around to local shops today, lots of sharp intakes of breath through teeth, "oooh thats a lot of work guv, we'll have to take all the panels off and everything" one place even said it was too much work and they didnt want to take the job on!!!! :xxx:

honking noise???
I've recently noticed a very odd honking noise during gear changes on my auto, it's pretty low pitched, not sure if it's always happened and I've only just realised but I'm fairly certain it's got louder. Only changes recently are a Blitz filter and an oil change... I know it's a bit vague but any idea what it might be?

what is the best upgrade route to around 400bhp
I was planning on the cheaper route and a boost controller so I can have it on "sensible boost" most of the time and crank it up on "special occasions" I've been assuming this should reduce the strain and hence the chance of a failure of the stock turbos, am I right or talking out of my tail pipe?

Flippin' Nissan Maindealer & cant find the oil filter....
Yeah, you're right. I've no excuse for not doing the oil change, that was just lazyness!! serves me right, cant seem to find the filter will have a proper look in the morning. Really didnt fancy messing with the Cambelt myself. Will be taking the car back tomorrow. Might have to have a test drive in that 350z they have on the forecourt while I'm there too!!!! ;-)

Flippin' Nissan Maindealer & cant find the oil filter....
Just got the car back from the local nissan dealer after a cambelt change and some numbnuts managed to break the plastic shield around the radiator fan in half!!!! the cheeky *****cks then just put it back on still in two pieces and didnt bother to tell me. Also they charged to change my oil and brake fluid yet the two litres of 5.1 I put in the boot havent been touched!!!!! Stoopid question but where is the oil filter? I want to check they have actually put a new one on the car and changed the oil! (on checking the residue on the filler cap the oil still seems really grubby, I would expect it to be a lot cleaner after a change....)

best car film ever.....?
Best car has to be the delorean from Back to the Future! Anybody know what they are actually like? yeah they look crap, i'm sure they are slow and drive crap too, but that film made them soooo damn cool!

Speed camera detectors to be banned
From the sound of that quote he is advocating the use of a GPS "informer" like the Origin Blue i, he is "Happy" for people to know where they are!! So I should get browny points for using one!!! still no firm decision on laser blinders which is good, they are a god-send!!!

Shift at will
Found this link via 300zx.org.uk http://www.ess-racing.com/ They used to make a pretty smart manual/auto shifty thing with buttons for the 300, it looks really cool in the video on the site. Anybody know if there is an equivalent product available elsewhere? Seems like the best of both worlds to me!!

Need a "sensible" car
Well the idea was my Z was going to be an everyday car but as I have been completly bitten by the bug in the space of a week and before long my car will have a body kit, funky wheels and a whole lot more boost I dont think its really sensible for turning up at a customers office with, (rumbling exhausts will get nothing but frowns I think, I have already become public enemy no. 1 with all the staff at my boys school, wait till the miserable old cows see the finished article, ) So the shopping list has been narrowed down to either an Alfa 156 2.5l or a 200sx s14, budget is 6k tops, I should get an decent alfa for that but whats the deal with the s14's are they a good everyday driver? I know nothing about them really, If they are as much fun as the old silvia I had when I was a nipper that could be the car for me!!

how do you remove tints?
Just spent an hour outside trying to remove the horrible great "300ZX" sticker from my rear window, oh those wacky japanese they do love a good joke.. at least I didnt have "Love, Drive, Passion, Desire" or some other mental slogan down the side of my car..... Lighter fluid and a wallpaper stripper seems to do the trick, takes bloooooody ages though. :(

MP3 help
I use Winamp to rip CDs to MP3, It fills in all the file details (album, track name, artist etc) but only if you tell it to (you need to fiddle around in the settings. Also make sure you rip to MP3 format not M4A (or whatever its called, apparently that is the "new version" of mp3, most players wont touch that format yet....) You can get an eval version I think and play around with it before you shell out your hard earned (or just get a crack like everybody else.. you aint seen me right!!)

Massive oil radiator
It sure is, but thats normal if you fit an aftermarket cooler isnt it, the orginal one becomes the auto transmission cooler and the new one is now the engine oil cooler. (making the old one that is built into the radiator core (I think) redundant) (according to the Z centre website anyway) It's going to the nelson mandella tomorrow for a cambelt change and a full service, I may ask the grease monkey there to have a gander but I think he will just get confused...
-
Massive oil radiator
I'm pretty certain the aftermarket cooler isnt the stillen one, and it's defo not part of the aircon as with the aircon turned off its seriously hot even after a short drive. making me think its oil, I couldnt work out where the pipes went which was a bummer, I'm thinking I may just pull off one of the hoses and see what's in there!! ;-) The guy who sold me the car was pretty convinced it was an oil cooler although it wasnt him that had it fitted. Fingers crossed It's going to a specialist soon for remapping etc. so I'll have it checked out then.

To Bleed or not to Bleed
according to the guff on the bottle it says it will mix with any other DOT standard fluid quite happily. I'm replacing the whole lot this morning though then off for a pootle around town to start bedding the brakes in.
