How much does a 300ZX autobox weigh?
Definitely more than 60KG for an autobox. I recently transported one in the back of my Zed which involved lifting it over the tail into the boot and out again and ever since my back has been telling me not to do that anymore! ;) I would estimate the weight of an autobox to be between 70 and 80KGS. If you need to ship it your best bet is to use a pallet service - should fit on half a pallet. HTH Dan

New Exhaust System
Hi, You can de-cat the car legally ONLY if it is older than a 1992 year (ie 1990-1992) otherwise you are legally obliged to have cats come MOT time. Full systems are hard to come by as most companies supply cat-back systems only. I, for example, sell Mongoose exhaust systems which add a lovely deep throaty roar whilst not being overly loud. If your car is from 1992 or before then you can add decat pipes. Mongoose don't do these but I can also get you some decent decat pipes if you want. The alternative is to take your car up to Leon at Alunox (Wrexham) for a full custom system - he has worked on quite a few member's Zeds and his work is generally regarded as a work of art. He's not cheap but you do get exactly what you pay for. I hope the above has given you something to think about. If you have any further questions please don't hesitate to ask. All the best, Dan

Hi Mark, I can supply you with an A'PEXi boost controller. A'PEXi has stopped production of their BOV's so you're only likely to find them second hand on the likes of ebay or other forums. Let me know exactly what boost controller you're after and I'll get you some prices. Regards, Dan

PC/PDA problem ... your thoughts please
Will do Chris. I understand the workings of the cradle now (thanks for your info) and I think it may be a fault in either the wired-in USB cable or the connection from the cradle to the PDA. In either case, I've got a new cradle coming my way and we'll see what happens then! Thanks again mate! :) Dan

PC/PDA problem ... your thoughts please
RESULT! I just "accidentally" dropped the cradle onto the desk. Put the PDA in it, turned it on and connected it to a USB port. And what do you know ...? The PC picked up the device, installed the driver and ActiveSync worked!!!!! :hyper: After all this head scratching all the cradle needed was a bit of a bash! Anyway - I'm glad I've ordered a new cradle (which should be with me after the weekend) hopefully that will solve the problem once and for all. I have noticed that I need to hold the PDA down with my finger in order for it to make continuous contact with the cradle so I'm assuming there is a break in a wire inside the cradle somewhere. I'm keeping my fingers crossed in anticipation that the rest of the day will go well and will let you guys know. Many thanks to everyone who has offered their advise - it was very much appreciated! Have a good weekend everyone! Dan

PC/PDA problem ... your thoughts please
Thanks! (1) There is no mention of any new and non-functioning device in the device manager. Not even a new portable storage device ... So I'm assuming this means no driver (correct or corrupt) has been loaded into the system (2) I haven't tried bluetooth yet but will do so this afternoon. (3) Sorry, I'm not on MSN. I'm more and more leaning towards to possibility that the cradle is at fault here. Dan

PC/PDA problem ... your thoughts please
Hi mate, Thanks for your input. Tried what you've advised but nothing happens ... Yes, cradle is also a charger and this function works well so could only be a USB cable problem ... I have another cradle (new) coming after the weekend and if I can't get the PDA to work before then hopefully that will solve the problem. Although I still think there is a problem with the PC picking up a USB device. General Q: If the PC has installed either the wrong device driver for the PDA or the driver is corrupted ... shouldn't the device show up in the device manager? Also, how do I get it to remove the "faulty" driver assuming I can't see the device in the device manager? Thanks! Dan PS - the Axim forum has only been of limited help but full of other useful information :) THanks Vijay!

PC/PDA problem ... your thoughts please
Hi Chris, Thanks mate. I have followed your advise but I'm afraid it hasn't helped :( I'm having another go this afternoon and will let you know. Cheers! Dan

PC/PDA problem ... your thoughts please
Hi James, Thanks for that. I had another go at it last night but still no cigar! I did find out a few more details though: I am running ActiveSync v4.5 on the PC and v4.0 on the PDA (I have tried v4.0 on the PC but that didn't help either) I also found a connection reference to the previous owner's home PC network on the PDA ... but haven't figured out how to change that yet. However, I think I have a much more fundamental problem in that my PC wont connect with the cradle. No matter which USB port i connect it to the PC just won't "see" it and therefore doesn't recognise it. And as long as that doesn't work ActiveSync won't see the PDA either ... I'm having another go at it this afternoon when I'm done with my work and will report back. Regards, Dan

Thanks guys - will have a look in the morning. Have decided that one afternoon of frustration is all I can take at the moment ;) Cheers, Dan

PC/PDA problem ... your thoughts please
Hi, I recently bought a Dell Axim X50v from a member on this board. It's a cracking bit of kit and works beautifully. I've been using it extensively but only got around to connecting it to my PC this afternoon. The kit came with all the bits (cradle, USB sync cable, official Dell MS Activesync 4.0 software, etc, etc). As per the instructions I installed the activesync software and followed the instructions on how to connect the cradle and device. I have 8 USB ports on the PC, all of which work fine. Whilst finishing off the sync installation I was told to connect the cradle to the USB port, turn the device (PDA) on and insert it into the cradle - the sync software should then recognise it and complete the installation/sync. This is where the problem starts. The software does not recognise the hardware automatically and letting it search for it doesn't turn it up either. So I cancelled the installation. Deleted the sync software, disconnect the USB cable and restarted the PC and followed the same procedure - same problem, still no connection. I then delete the sync software (again), restart the PC (again) and decide to see if the PC will pick up the USB cradle by itself. Put the USB cable into a free USB port and ... nothing! I have checked every USB port on the PC with my memory stick and they all work properly. Being a sucker for punishment I decide to go through the process again and this time when I connect the USB cradle a "balloon" pops up from the task bar stating something to the effect of "the deivice is not installed properly and may not work correctly". There is no where to click on the balloon to investigate what's going on and further investigation in the system device manager shows no new hardware or any problems with existing hardware. I'm now at my wits end. I need to get this PDA connected to the PC in order to (a) sync outlook files as well as (b) install TomTom software on the PDA. It's really doing my nut in. Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions? I have been thinking that perhaps the USB cradle is defective but it wouldn't appear to be the case as it charges the PDA without problem. Thanks for your thoughts! Dan

Apexi Intake
Hi, (1) Splash guard: yes, leave this in place as it will reduce the amount of water splashing up onto the filter (2) Air feed: no need to block any pipes. The filter attaches directly to the AFM (as you know) and there are no vacuum hoses leading to/from the AFM so no need to block anything up. The air feeds coming from the side are more than sufficient to supply all the air that's required (3) Vented nose panel: This is not strictly necessary as there is sufficient air ingress from the side air feeds and head-on from the front of the bumer. In addition, adding a vented nose panel will increase the chances of water splashing onto the filter through the vents. This may lead to poor running and possibly a knackered AFM if water gets into that. NB: In case you are not aware, the A'PEXi cone filters are "dry" type filters meaning they do not need to be cleaned and then oiled (like K&N type filters). If the filter is in need of a clean just clean with warm water and a soft brush and leave to dry completely before putting it back on the car. HTH Dan

Yep, try a breaker or one of our specialists. I got mine from Jeff at ZedWorld and it sorted the problem.

My snowboard adventures...
I used to be quite "up" on my SLR photography but that was many years ago ... As far as I can remember there are special "snow" filters which prevent the snow part in your pictures from turning blue. Don't forget to adjust your f-stop in accordance to the filter instructions. Also, when taking pics in the snow the camera has a tendency to under expose so try and take meter readings off your darkest subject in the frame and lock the settings. I'm sure this makes sense somehow ...

Coilovers etc
If it is just a drop you're after (and not multi-setup features) then lowering springs will do the job just fine. Coilovers are usually used where the car requires either multiple ride height adjustments or multiple damper settings. Price wise you're looking at a considerable amount of money. A Tein Flex system (with EDFC) will set you back around £1300. For a set of lowering springs you are looking at prices between £125 to £300 depending on the brand. We resell AVO lowering springs (£135 for set of four) which drop the car 30mm and increase the springrate by 25% over stock. Quite a few people have these on their cars (ie lack300, harve, james300, me, etc) and you can retain your stock shock absorbers. Installation is straight forward although you're advised to have someone help you as two pairs of hands make work easier. The resulting ride (on AVO springs) is superb! The car feels a lot more solid on the road, corners like on rails and isn't teeth shattering hard.

Twinz bumpers
We [DTA UK] did a feasibility study on the distribution of the "Twinz" bumper but had to conclude that it would work out too expensive (taking into consideration shipping, import duty, vat costs). It would leave no profit margin at all and make the bumper about three times the price of the 99-spec bumper. Guess other traders came to the same conclusion.

fog lights
Have a look at the ZCentre website: http://www.zcentre.co.uk. They will be under the lighting section. If memory serves me the left and right units are differently priced. There are also several options: JDM, US or just glass replacement. HTH Dan

For those that need replacement fog lights...
LOL! Yes, Stillen do charge an arm, leg and kidney to get stuff shipped. It often works out cheaper to order two of a product and get it shipped to the UK (I do that with their anti-sway bars). Both Mike (MJP) and I (DTA) import items from Stillen on a regular basis. It may be worth contacting Mike to see when his next shipment is due to depart the US (I have unfortunately nothing scheduled for at least another month or two). Combined shipments always work out cheaper for the customer. HTH Dan

Splash gaurds for Induction kits
For what it's worth, unless you have a vented nose panel you are more likely to get water splashing up onto the filter from below than above so my first priority would be to build a lower splash guard (unless you have the lower half of the stock box in place as suggest by Legrath). HTH Dan
