Been doing a bit of research on my backfire problem and have found a few comments about the EFI loom (the part that runs at the back of the engine) getting crushed when installing the engine. Might be worth checking Terry

I have the same problem to sort out. I've plugged mine into my conzult and it seems i have a problem with No4 cylinder which i have to sort out yet. My backfire only comes from the passenger side exhaust and only dose it when the engine warms up. I'll let you know when i find the cause Terry might help you out.
