Rear wiper reemoval and MOT expereince
Wow, this is an old thread. I did remove the wiper and spoiler and I think the car looked much better for it, and the boot held itself up on it's gas struts. It was never a problem come MOT time (although there were many others!) but I don't have the car anymore. Anyone know of K403 MGW? It was a TT Manual so not too common. I loved it but a combination of no wedge and a new-born meant it had to go.

320mm steering wheel or 350?
I had what I thought was a Momo but it broke and failed the MOT! Probably a copy but it came with the car. This has got to be a rare failure, or I'm a bit tense when I drive?? I had to get a wheel quick for the MOT and guessed the size at 300mm, I was quite a bit out. It's very small. I am getting used to it though and it is VERY go-kart like but impossible to see the dials, I'll have to get the road angel out.

Uprated upper links are they
Has anyone ever fitted these? If so how do you get the old bushes out? Do the new ones need pressing in?

What happened to Doobs too?
Andy, why can't I add to that post then? Doobs isn't me, only Doobs too and Doobs too 2.

Your zed- an every day car?
I've got to agree, use them every day and they keep going. Park them up and they rot, same with all old cars. Thank god my brother parked his car up and used mine while i was away, only to have to get his sorted for the MOT (mine passed!).

Anyone got the zcentre HID's?
I've got them but don't know what they're like yet. My brother has my car, he fitted them and he said local wildlife was reporting sleeping difficulties. From what I've read they are a worthwhile investment.

Full tank mileage?
Looks like a nice car Damien, I'll be back in Essex (Westcliff-on-sea) when I get back to the UK in 1 week 3 days 3 hours and 24 mins - not counting really. Mileage, about 250 to the tank, got 160 once but mostly slow trips to work down the A127 so not ideal. Average was 19mpg over a year. My justification is that there is little depreciation. If you bought a new car you'd be loosing 000's per year, more then we spend on fuel. I know what you mean about these cars, you're lucky you can get one so young, I had to wait until I was 28 until I got mine. Love it though, I wonder if I'll ever not own one.

Rear wiper reemoval and MOT expereince
Apache, any pics of the Laguna wiper on your car? Maybe something to consider for the future. Knock knock, I've got to get this sorted before I get back to the UK so I'm going the whole hog and having the lot off. If I were to fit a wing in the future I might consider putting the wiper back, maybe. I never used the wiper when I had it so I don't think I'll miss it.

Rear wiper reemoval and MOT expereince
Thanks gents, off it comes then. I have to say without a rear wing the wiper stands out, hence the desire to remove it. Legrath, what's your plan for the redundent switch?

Rear wiper reemoval and MOT expereince
I'm having my rear spoiler removed and I'm considering a rear wiper removal too. I know it's not an MOT requirement to not have a rear wiper, as some cars don't come with them fitted, and vans etc don't have them. But it is a requirement to have it working if it's fitted. Does this mean fitted to the car as it left the factory, or just fitted at test time? What I'm getting at is does removing it actually count as removing it or simply rendering a fitted part unusable to an MOT inspector? Would I need to blank the switch off for it to pass? Your thoughts would be apprecieated, especailly if you happen to be an MOT tester or you're removed yours and passed an MOT :)

Bye Bye Zzzzed
Good luck in China, I'm sure you'll love it. Where will you be? Avoid soup which no one will tell you the contents of!

quick reply req, short shifter fitting....
It's been a while since I did mine but IIRC you cal tell buy looking at the position of the pivot relative to the mounting surface, the closer the pivot is to the gearbox the longer the shift.

brake pipe - URGENT HELP NEEDED!
DON'T use 5.1 unless you want to replace your fluid every few months. 5.1 is good for race cars, silicone based, very high boiling points but is highly hydroscopic (ie sucks up water and reduces boiling point). Sounds good in the shops but don't go by pure numbers, stick to Super DOT4 unless you've got a very good reason to do otherwise.

quick reply req, short shifter fitting....
Are you absolutly sure you've already got a short shift? It's not the length of the lever that changes but the pivot it rotates around. The actual difference in pivot point position is small (50mm) but as it's a lever the effect is multiplied.

brake pipe - URGENT HELP NEEDED!
Line pressue under an arse twitching stop (50kg+ pedal pressure) can be as high as 80 - 100 bar depending on the brake system so glue will never hold. As the others siad you have to get a new pipe, only question is where from. Nissan charging 80 quid is predictable but still a total joke, as Slike Pete said materials are peanuts.
-
brake pipes.....
It is a brake pipe, the difficult ones people refer to are the long ones that run to the rear brakes, often over the top of the fuel tank (not sure of the routing on a Z). Your friendly local independent garage should be able to make one up for you if you don't want to do it yourself. Just take the old one as a pattern. Nissan will charge you loads if they even sell pre bent versions. You're unlikely to get a pattern one as garages make them up themselves. If you do it yourself make sure you check the type of flare, I guess Z's use JASO flares whereas EU/US OEM's use ISO.

Help With Radiator removal!!!!!!
Dave, I hope you managed to get this done. I should have made it clear in the FAQ, the car was on ramps when I did this so access was pretty easy. I made the ramps myself as standard ones are too steep, just a plank cut into three unequal lengths and glued together so that the longest is at the bottom and the shortest at the top. Make sure the total height of the ramp is less then the ground clearance of your car so if you drive off the front of them you'll do no damage.

Is there are template for cutting the diffuser anywhere?

problem with brakes HELP
Sounds like the ABS ECU is working when it shouldn't, the pedal will go soft when the unit is modulating. First thing is check the fluid level and for any leaks. Next thing is check the associated electrics. This means the main connector into the ECU, all four Wheel Speed Sensors and their plugs etc. Then start swapping bits with someone, not forgetting the wheel speed sensors, I think you might find one of those is the cause (probably won't now I've said that!).

Modded Tamiya 300zx
I've built one and the only problem with the model is the fact I built it. It's Tamyia so the quality is very good indeed.

i like these on ebay for the z
It looks nice but as for "Optimal weight for smoother shifting" - PMSL!

Big Brakes and ABS
"same part no to be ordered for both with same S/W installed!" It's very possible both cars use the same algorithms but I can't imagine they'd use the same parameter sets. Probably the ABS module stores parameter sets for all Merc models built at a particular location (to reduce the number of parts to choose from) and the end of line diagnostic machine tells the ABS module what the car is (you're a 190 diesel, you're an AMG etc) at which point it loads the correct parameter set. "Possible merc use the same algorithms in the ECU then the ABS master unit with pistons etc is matched to the callipers?" The industry has moved away from separate ECU / valve bodies now to save cost and weight. The units are no longer servicable but they are so much smaller that replacement costs have reduced (to the manufacturers if not the end customer). The volume of fluid required to be removed to reduce the pressure in even a large caliper is very small, most valve blocks can cope with a wide variation of brake system. The blocks are so expensive to engineer that the brake system suppliers design them to suit the widest range of applications possible at the time and cope with the variation using software.
