I'm truly sorry to hear that mate - I've always had dogs in the family since the day I was born and can't imagine life without them - sadly this means I've also had to bury them when their time has come. All I can say is your boss is clearly not a dog owner and doesn't realise that whether it's an animal or not, losing a part of your family is NOT something you just get over in a few hours.

i personally think its because they get paid too much. £100k+ PER WEEK plus £ms in royalties/advertising/own businesses for doing your favourite thing is just sick in my opinion :( pay them £50k a year and tell them if they don't perform they're out - THEN we'll see who the best players are!
