I'd go with Idle control thing too, mine would do it every now and then, since i've had it setup with conzult and fix the problem with the IACV its been peachy.

dells tend to use there own design connector so probably only on another dell, its probably the dc jack on the motherboard that has a dry joint, or a duff wire near the connector

mine have the push clip like these in this ebay listing, they do break quite easily when old.

No offence was taken just seemed abit rash, but in view of your circumstances highly understandable.

It could be bad connections on injectors or coil packs, the wiring gets quite brittle and the contacts fur up.

How simple is simple to do?

Advice is free or else it would be in the paid members section :confused: The petrol smell is usually from the leaking pipes around fuel pressure regulator its between the plenum passenger side. Does the smell go after its warmed up, nip up the hose clips around that and all should be well. Never heard of the tapping problem in that area though.

yeah tried various buffer settings, hardware/software modes. I take it datascan should run ok on XP? I'm not desperate to get it working ecutalk will show most of the sensors but doesnt really have any diag features.

Its a pci express jobby that plugs into the new style laptop slots, so not using a usb port as such but it does appear in device manager as a Prolific usb to serial device, i've matched the com ports in datascan and set the comport settings to what it says on the datascan site, it kinda works in that if you have the wrong port it says not found, changing it to the right one it sees the ecu but it just hangs the cpu at 100%, it will find the ecu's when I do a search too, put then i can't click anything everythings greyed out and I have to end task it.
