My car on dyno day-2
Wot, you put up a post in a seperate thread, or the one you put here about going for a blast on the A12? You still had hangover-head when you put that one up. Airflow restriction - I dunno. My boost seems to peak then fall off a bit. Alex's was doing the same thing, only /much/ more dramatically. I dunno how many other people have noticed this - it's fairly obvious using the logging plot in monitor mode on an AVC-R. Really, I dunno how much ICs will affect airflow, but I do appreciate that the process of compressing air creates heat - I was laughing about earlier 200's (S13's?) not having intercoolers - Pete said: well, running that little boost (as standard) with that size turbo, they don't need them. So I could understand that if you're trying to regularly make 1 bar+ with T25 hybrids, you'll have more heat to get rid of. I never had a decent boost gauge when I had those turbos so I dunno how much the boost would've been dropping off. Bigger ICs are gonna help you get rid of that heat you'll be making. What you might find is, even if you make the same amount of boost, if the charge temperature is lower, you'll make more power. You can't really go wrong with bigger ICs even if standards aren't restricting airflow. I didn't have a proper chat with Alex about this, but do you /really/ need the same level of boost at top revs that you do at peak torque? He wasn't happy with how much his was dropping off... and kinda understandably so (it was dropping off a lot). If you're dropping, what, 2 psi?.. I wouldn't have thought that was a major problem. Probably worth talking to someone who knows what they're on about when it comes to this stuff ;) Just a quick question about your lump Dave - you're running SE's forged pistons, you've had a bit of head porting done (?yes?), standard cams... have you had the block mig-wired? I'm wondering how much boost Pete is thinking would be safe to run on yours. I'm not really worried running 20 PSI (it'll go much more), but only because I went for the theoretically "bomb-proof" option.

I like it when he gets to drawing diagrams ;) Bigger IC's would be cool :) Smaller turbos trying to make more boost is gonna equate to more heat. I've had the bigger ones for a while now, even when I had the same sort of turbos you've got. If you were thinking of buying them anyway then it's good that he thinks you should have them. You spotted it then? It's actually doing the first part of the run in 2nd, then changes up to 3rd (1:1) around peak torque ;) I dunno if I can really quote that peak torque figure seeing as the whole run's not done in one gear like it should be. The last time I saw your printout I was handing it to Pete just before he got in your car to drive back from Witham. He said something about laminating my last plot, and I haven't seen that again so I imagine they're both together somewhere  How did you think your car now feels, by the way Dave?

The BIG ISSUE!.
Not trying to avoid you or anything, but I may not be around much in the next 3 weeks. My car might be at SE tho - I dunno... I think they're probably sick of the sight of it by now ;) Adam - the end bhp figure isn't that important really, it's the enormous torque you'll really feel. I'm thinking of doing passenger rides for a tenner a pop - that might just cover the petrol that gets guzzled  ;)

Sure, I'll take you for a spin mate. It's a different experience to yours (different, not better). Yours still felt like it was thumping on alright. He put a load of Optimax in it when we were out (dunno how much) cos the needle was on empty. That's probably messed up your mpg sums. I wouldn't worry about the graph and how it relates to yours. There's a glaringly obvious problem on that graph (and the previous one) that I'm surprised noones made a big thing about. No, it's not anything to do with rear-wheel to fly, or tranny losses! I've stopped quoting a peak torque figure - come on, that's a mahoosive clue :) Still, I was kinda thinking the lines on the graph look surprisingly clean. It's running alright ;)

Shamelessly stolen from the US 300 site... (just been waiting for an excuse to use it really ;) )

Didn't I say this already?!... yes, if you're comparing car to car. But you wouldn't take an auto into a place like SE and say: I want 400 rwbhp because the first thing they'd do is rip the autobox out and throw it away. They've built an engine, and a kick ass one at that.

OK, furry muff. So if I empty out the ATF the loss might work out a bit more accurate? ;) It's a mountain in the saaf of France... cos that's all that's on my mind really at the mo :D All this talk of bhp and cars is pointless really... it'll never be as quick as me flying down a mountain on me snowboard! :)

Took me ages to draw this... ;)

I've seen your plot - you had a ton of wheelspin, so it's bound to work out those runs wrong! :) I should stick a new plot up really, shouldn't I? How did the auto losses compare at Thor? Of course, they work out the auto losses the same as the manual, so if one's wrong, so's the other.

Dude... I'm /so sorry/... but, ya know - it's just a good excuse to build it stronger next time, I guess?! I dunno what to say. This is probably just about the worst place to say: if you're running a standard bottom end and you push it beyond 1 bar, it *will* break. Maybe not today. Maybe not even tomorrow?! On the positive side, you did confuse a few people running verniers and making more power than anyone expected. It was looking good for a while. I was impressed, I have to say. More, better, later. Where's that credit card? ;)

Oh dear. It all seems to have gone a bit quiet over there since I mentioned Ricin. I can't imagine why  Am I in some kind of trouble?!

How much power will my car have at the wheel when its finished?
That's just how they're /supposed/ to run, isn't it?! Mine sounds like it's running on 2 for the 1st 30 seconds - I've seen people stand and stare at it like if they just hang about for a bit, it'll fall apart right in front of them. It never does of course. It just warms up and starts running nice. Even my mum said it was sounding kinda ropey - now what the f*ck does /she/ know about cars?! As long as you're prepared for piston-clatter and lumpy idle, I'm sure you won't give a stuff what anyone thinks. You know better, after all... when it's warm, you'll be tearing up tarmac ;)

Beer-brain-filladge! :duffer: Not that it's a big problem (Stu), but you know bigger injectors give you less accurate control low down, so you might find your idle and low throttle stuff is a bit wobbly. Then saying that, you've got overbore pistons and lower compression, so you'll have to get used to it running like cr*p when it's cold anyway. You can't win without losing somewhere. Honestly, I wouldn't have said any of this crud is a serious problem. If you're starting your car from cold tho, people *will* think you've f*cked the thing because it sounds kinda rough. Just flip them the bird and stutter down the road at 10 mph til it warms up! ;) Make a point of charging back down the road at full boost on your way home because it's fully warmed up and sounds super-sweet :D

The BIG ISSUE!.
Tooman - book an appointment to speak to Pete if you're thinking of spending serious money. If you just wanna look around, Bob can show you what's what. Let me know if you come down - I'm kinda local, so I could come say hello if you like. Bob will no doubt point to various bits of my car to try to sell you something ;)

The BIG ISSUE!.
I'm not saying it's impossible (cos we had a look at a few at Billing) but I reckon it's hard work modding an MR2 cos you need to get rid of the heat somewhere. They must feel pretty quick. Who cares about stock figures?! ;)

Yeah, I guessed you might be a bit p*ssed or you wouldn't be talking about getting a Supra ;) Gotta admit, I've been there with that thinking  But, really, your car felt good earlier. And I did keep saying to Pete: it's pinking about... there. He knew, but it just felt good to be confirming what he knew. He'll tell you more, and it's not my place to tell you what he done, but the traffic was keeping your car back unfortunately. I /really/ dunno how he does it - it's a f*cking piece of art that he can hammer on that fast, look at what the fuel and timing are doing, flip data in the maps, keep the car in the right lane, and not crash into the guy in front! I /really/ shouldn't be saying this in public... I might get him in trouble! Put it this way, /I/ would've been happy with your car after he'd finished with it - the power through the rev-range was impressive. And with *no* detting! It didn't det on the rolling road either, which is important. I wouldn't have minded taking it out and chucking it about a bit, but it's got one of those new fangled "manual-box" thingumies... what's THAT all about?! :)

Spinnaz, man! :D Next performance upgrade for my car has /got/ to be a honey standing at a funny angle in a bikini and stillettos! :) F*ck me, I'd even make do with a cardboard cut-out just for a few ph0t0zZz. What's the King Of Bling got to say about all this?! Stuart?!

The BIG ISSUE!.
:D I think if you check my (rather out of date) ride section, you might find your answer ;) I've been going to SE for many years (leaving myself wide open to jokes there!). I'd fully recommend them, but with the government health warning that getting this sort of stuff done needs full-on committment... it's not like going into a super-market and buying a packet of peanuts. If you're serious about having serious work done, you may have to suffer for it. If you're just thinking servicing and general maintainance, then they can be great. If you want big stuff done, you have to get involved with the job - it's not just big money you'll need to part with. I reckon a lot of people just don't get this... it's like you /should/ just be able to walk in and "buy" 500 bhp, but it doesn't work like that at all. In an ideal world, maybe. But it aint, is it!? I can't really comment about anywhere else because I've not been anywhere else (stupid me?). SE are daan saaf - Essex boys, eh? ;)

The BIG ISSUE!.
Oh. Does he think it's quick or somink then? ;) I keep seeing a MR2 (series-2?) with a phatt spoiler on the way home from work. OK, so you weren't far off with the fly-figure - next week it could be more than that. It's only numbers tho, aint it?! Does his car /feel/ quick? That's all that's important. I'm telling you, I'll take you out for a spin and it might just realign your perception of what a quick car feels like :D Or you might just think it's slow as fook! ;)
-
How much power will my car have at the wheel when its finished?
Not that this is any help, but I was told injectors can't run accurately beyond 80% because there's not enough time for them to switch off before they have to switch back on again. So (apparently) beyond 80%, you may as well be running them at 100%. Stu - when are you thinking your car will be back together again? This is a brave experiment you're performing, so it'll be interesting to see how it comes out. Fingers crossed it's all a piece of p*ss :)

The BIG ISSUE!.
The Lanes? Snooker? You got a membership (mine expired about 15 years ago). Did you tell them the latest figure, or the old "safety" one? Wot, your mates a bunch of Saxo boys or somink? Or have they got proper cars with decent bhp? Your phone don't work?! You're on the wrong network ;)

The BIG ISSUE!.
I thought you said it was sh*t in there?! Come to think of it, I thought you were talking about some hotel last time you mentioned it. But yeah, I had to drop a game back in F*ck-Buster (opposite). I woulda parked there too, if all the soppy tit-w*nks from the Roebuck didn't keep parking there! Shoulda txt'd me - I'd've come in for a beer :)

Did it look like a big gay spaceship?.. cos I might know who it was if it did. Big spoiler, silver VT5Rs (5 spoke alloys)?
