Pay for membership of 300zx.co.uk?

Guys, just out of interest and I have been given permsission from Craig to post this. Who would be prepared to pay for membership?

Simple as that, not gonna mention money too much but say you were asked to stump up a fiver/tenner for the year! How would you go with that?

Would mean that the guys like Nick and Craig could make things better and maybe deter the bad elements from joining and posting against the true members!

Personally I think it would be good, I know I post a load of shite but at the end of the day I own a 300ZX and that gives me the right to post or be a member!

LOL biggrin.gif Unless of course I get banned! ROFL biggrin.gif

So what do you think? Just testing the water really!

I think its a great idea. I know Craig puts a lot of hard work in and I'm sure Nico tries his best wink.gif (only messin mate!).

This would be a step in becoming a 'proper' car club, not just an owners website.

Dave

Nice one! Like I said, just testing the water really and some interesting comments above. No doubt Craig/Nico will make up their own minds. wink.gif

I pity tha foo!

How about, the site is free to surf and READ, in order to post, you must register your details including address, from the point of this persons 1st post a clock is activated giving them say 7 days to send in payment, if no payment received, no more posts, this helps the ones who just pass through looking for advice etc, but then the real wind up merchants who post under false names can only be around for a short time then they are gone unless they wanna pay to wind us up, have seen other non car related sites offering such trials of surfing.

Then all those who wish to sell, must be Zed owners, submit regular posts and pay say £100 a year for a dedicated to link to company.

cheers

smithy cool.gif

What about giving us a VOTE TO DELETE option like TT Net have. Then when some sad Billy No Mates comes on with the usual "My car is so fast everyone listen to me" type crap we can just get rid without having to rely on Craig and Nico to deal with it.

Paul

I don't see how paying up in 7 days, would determine better behaviour, the wind up merchants can join get chucked off, and then reregister with a false name address and change their email. If you just delete their threads then you are depriving them of exactly what they are seeking, attention!

Hi,

the only thing that can eliminate this is stricter controls on Posts.

Maybe you could start off with a rule on no effing and blinding. If people break this they cannot post for a couple of weeks.

If people start slagging each other off then give them some time off the forum and delete the thread.

If people learn that they can't be heard unless they communicate resonably, then they will communicate resonably.

Nice idea but wouldn't this mean Bye bye Warren for a couple of weeks cos of the above post? biggrin.gif

excellant idea mr g vote to delete is a good one but paying for membership is equally as valid its time for us all to put a bit back to nico/craig for running the site as its costing them money out of their own pockets at the moment and we should cough up a little to re-imburse them so to speak

OK guys and gals,

have been thinking this over and chatting with the other main man biggrin.gif

i had been thinking of something like this for a while, but the logistics etc of how it would work were a little difficult.

i had also spoken with smithy and a couple of others about how to help finance upgrading the server and service using commission from suppliers.

i had a deal worked out which should work well for everyone, but have been snowed under with work to get the nitty gritty scripting and stuff working for these guys.

but basically, i will create a mini mall section, where you can see their products and submit orders online, and the forum will take a tiny 2% commission.

i do not want to alienate or deter anyone from coming to the site and getting help/advice and getting to know everyone, so how about i set up a completely private members only forum on here, and leave all the current forums as they are.

that way, newcomers still get to see the lively banter and dodgy technical advice, but we have somewhere that is supposedly sacred.

then, when newcomers have a couple of hundred posts under their belt, and are known personally by a few existing members, we can invite them into the fold.

this also means that all crap threads can be deleted in the public forums, and all visitors and guests that are deliberate antagonists can be repeatedly censored

(theres nothing to stop this happening now, except that i like to keep everything...)

all donations will go towards new server hardware (badly needed) and looking into finding a better colocation solution that doesnt have the threat of instant disconnection at any time (some of you know where it is and why... wink.gif )

also, if we legitamise the server hosting, then there is no problem with you wannabe zed related domain owners tongue.gif hosting your sites here as well.

would make one heck of a seamless zed resource.

so, proposed charges of something stupid like 12 quid a year ?

just give me some time to finalise the details and decide on the account type/method of payment biggrin.gif

i would have gone for paypal/nochex, but recent problems and all that.... wink.gif

there is no way nick or i want to profit from the site or members personally, that has never been our intention, unless we started supplying parts etc biggrin.gif so hopefully you will all trust that we will handle the dosh in a responsible way

so, does any of this make sense ?

Good Idea Craig,

But it still leaves the question on how do we deal with repeating offenders, do you think it might be an idea to create another administrator. An anonymous one, that can impose bans and delete threads, if we go for the voting system how many votes would be needed to delete a thread and could we vote anonimously to avoid further repurcussions!

Mark

OK by me, Mr Craig, sir.

It just so happens that a mate of mine runs a host so if you wanted to e-mail me your requirements (space, bandwidth, hardware), I'll beat up on him to get you a good price. I can also lay my hands on good s/h Cisco and other stuff (legit, no dented cartons, nuffink like that, that was right out) if you ever need something.

Cheers - Gio

Gio,

Well rules are rules, you can't have one set of rules for one group or individual and not another. I don't want to get tied up with individual occurences, that is not my interest, the benefit of the site as a whole is what concerns me!

Mark

Mark - ah, just read back far enough to get the point. Wasn't proposing to have different rules just my opinion on this constant effing and blinding seems to be similar to yours. And the extreme reaction (well, extreme IMO) seemed to be a nice example in a jokey sort of way. Ish.

All the points made are valid and I think it is going to be very difficult to get everyone to pay without losing some members.

As a Z owner, I could not live without this Forum. Well ok, I could but I would be even more broke than I am now. However, I cant say that I post that much and I know of members that post even less. A £5er or a £10er is not a big price to pay for the return of valuable information that we get.

The only problem I can see with making the forum chargable is that we would be possibly ostrosizing ourselves from the other forums-not that we are attatched to any but you know what I mean. And there's a lot of them out there. Maybe even loosing out from potential 300zx buyers, for those of you who are looking to sell.

One suggestion possibly would be to allow the 1st 25-50 postings to be free per year, and then charge the agreed membership fee. That way, it allows the ocasional poster to ask the odd question, and for those that know that 50 posts would not be enough for the first day, can just cough up straight away.

I think the administrator do a fantastic job and I commend you for having done it for free so far. I believe that you should get paid for it but it has to be done in the right way!

Just my thoughts.

Why does anything have to change? Just means that to post you have to be a member! Doesn't stop people from reading anything IMO! wink.gif

At the end of the day it's up to Craig and Nick how they work it but even if nothing changes in the slightest I think we should stump up some deserved wonga for the site and hardware upgrades!

LOL This was a real bugger to reply to as i had nothing to come back with :S :P

5 or 10 is ok as long as I get a sticker biggrin.gif

Herman

To make the whole site chargeable would be a bad thing, as there are many other free sources of information out there on the web.

The amateur technical advice would also need to be kerbed to paying members, who would probably expect a higher grade of advice.

I don't know who would use a separate "members only" forum, apart from a few regulars, some of whom are also the main antagonists on this bulletin board . wink.gif

Most of the arguments tend to be internal and aren't started by "outsiders" anyway.

Ultimately you will need to offer more than a bulletin board if you want to make 300zx.co.uk into some sort of Owners Club!

Will there also be saparate forums for Manual and Auto owners biggrin.gif

Just a couple of points / suggestions to add.

1) As I started reading the thread, I was thinking about making the tech forum public and general private - the tech forum will give a feel for the place and tossers won't pay the £12 (or whatever) to join the general. Having read more of this thread, I'm not convinced this is a good idea but thought I'd mention it in case it inspires other ideas.

2) There is mention of it making administrators more liable. I suspect that if the right agreement were drawn up it could have the opposite effect. Something like "I am paying for membership and in doing so I take on publishing rights and responsibilities for all my posts". I'm not a legal expert but there must be some way to do this -mustn't there ?

Dave

craig,i think a small fee would be a good idea for forum members, but where you could make some real dosh is off the companies who sell their products on ur site,go for it mate and get ur percentage!i cant see you making enough off the members anyway, but you could make a kickarse site from the money you'd get from the guys makin a fortune off you!

What about this boys and girls, we have had this excellent forum at our disposal for a while now and it hasn't cost us a penny. We all know how much we have saved.

Reading between the lines, new equipment is needed and extra stuff needs doing, so why dont we all just put a tenner or something into an envelope and post it to Craig.

Don't worry about anything else. As a suggestion all members contribute (but it is optional) just send what your happy with.

Just an idea?

I hope craig never worked that price out based on the membership cout? did he?

I mean there are about 20 real members lol.
