Pay for membership of 300zx.co.uk?

Guys, just out of interest and I have been given permsission from Craig to post this. Who would be prepared to pay for membership?

Simple as that, not gonna mention money too much but say you were asked to stump up a fiver/tenner for the year! How would you go with that?

Would mean that the guys like Nick and Craig could make things better and maybe deter the bad elements from joining and posting against the true members!

Personally I think it would be good, I know I post a load of shite but at the end of the day I own a 300ZX and that gives me the right to post or be a member!

LOL biggrin.gif Unless of course I get banned! ROFL biggrin.gif

So what do you think? Just testing the water really!

fuckin hell, this should be posted under the "say something contovertial thread"

seriously, i dont have a problem with forkin out a fiver for membership, i mean how much money have people saved anyway due to hints/tips and knowledge of other members.

go for it, youve got my vote

I have been suggesting this for how long now.

But i recon it should be more like £20-50 and then if craig does not keep the forum updated daily we can get him banned biggrin.gif

Nico dont count because hes an arse.

YOU LAG YOU DRAG

Yep.

I agree, a fee should be paid to help with the running of the forum, they do a great job for fluff all really!

Who do I make the cheque out to?

As an after thought, I would vote for a members only forum whilst keeping the 'open' forum free for all to post - how about this as a compromise? We need to encourage 'new blood' whilst doing away with the antogonistic, disruptive elements.

Sounds good to me.

I've saved hundreds if not thousands of pounds by using this forum and if it helps towards the upkeep then all the better.

Nick and Craig must put a hell of a lot of time into this site so they deserve something back from us I reckon.

Also keeping the tossers away who don't own Z's will be a definate advantage.

There must be some method of letting new people view the site or whatever though or new members may be put off if they don't know what they are missing out on - in a couple of years after people have moved on and sold their Z's the place will be eerily silent except for the rantings of madman Timmy biggrin.gif LOL

Yep, fine by me. I also like TT Tim's idea. Go for it.

Do 200sx Lurkers get a discount. smile.gif

But I don't mind paying a bit if it keeps the board running, but the problem with charging is that you alienate new (genuine) members too.

Our board has a members area, but there's nothing in it other than club news and special offers, all the chat is still in public domain.

I do on the other hand see your point as to why you want to make it more exclusive.

Jezz.

I don't have a problem with that Timmy. Fair enough considering all the help / info the forum has given me.

Simon H

this site has saved me a fortune too!so it would be well worth paying a fee, whether to pay a large fee would depend on how much the site improved?

craig you can have my money m8

thanks jaylox

I'm more than happy to pay as well to be a member AND an extra amount as a trader for selling me shiny bits, other sites seem to be sponsored by traders to help the running costs. Keep the members fee small then see.

cheers

smithy cool.gif

i'm in. but would still vote for a public domain, as i bought my zed from an advert on this site, which i wouldnt have done had i had to pay to join.

Steve

I have no problem with paying, but there is a certain leap of faith in assuming that the people who pay won't be troublemakers wink.gif

However, I see the major benefit being that if the libellous comments are limited to the 'private' forum then that must reduce the liability to the forum owners because its no longer public, AND it does provide greater accountability for the author, so they are less likey to assume that they can be anonymous on the Internet.

I would have no problem paying.

I do have one reservation though, and that is new members will be put off.

Often when people are browsing they are happy for free stuff but as soon as payment is required they go elsewhere.

Don't forget that twinturbo, the aussi site and many others are all free, and it would be a shame to loose experienced people joining cause they don't want to pay.

Just my 2p, get it lol

Martin

I totaly agree, the greatest benefit from belonging to the 300zx site is the transfer of knowledge, and meeting like minded people, whatever that is smile.gif which as you all know is priceless, I think a tenner is reasonable, although you see how much you can save asking people their opinion and once again the knowledge is priceless.

rob

The problem with 'nominal fees', such as £5 or maybe £10 is that the cost of collecting and administering them may outweigh the income received. But I think that is down to the forum owners to decide.

well thats the idea, you can then delete the membership and well if they are dumb enough to keep giving money, well then thats there problem lol.

You really want to think hard about this Timmy. We (the 200 club) only went mambership due to having to pay hosting costs. I can say from personal experience that setting up and getting such a club running is bloody hard work - far more than we ever anticipated. If you have any questions about some of the ins and outs of setting up a club like this, please feel free to email me at keith_c@sxoc.com

Cheers

Warren,

So you could save yourself a tenner straight away then ! LOL biggrin.gif

There will be problems with this though.

  • It will turn new members away. They will come on here post a few technical questions about their new Z then be faced with a £10 charge. What are we Nissan UK?
  • Legal problems with companies saying they are gonna sue over libal or what ever. We can get away with it now because its an open forum and any one can come here and say what they like. If we have to pay, that means there are professional moderators who are then 100% responsible for what ever is on the forum.
  • What happens when a person who uses the forum just for technical help, which there are, they pay and post 3 or 4 technical questions who nobody are able to answer. They will want their money back.
  • You will lose a substantial number of "casual" members. Ajay, DaveW, ay3388 Branners, SequantialTurbo, people who visit from other forums, to name just a few, who dont come on this forum very often or rarely post. They are not gonna pay just in case they want to post. Would you go to Scooby.net or the Supra forum if you had to pay?
People will remember it was Ajay (a casual member) who organised the last Traction Control group buy and paid for most people. Thanks again Ajay biggrin.gif If it wasnt for her it wouldnt have happened.

Yes I do think Craig and Co. do need something for doing this. Something that says thanks from us all. Having to pay to get on is not the best idea. But if we pay £5 or £10 to have some other privelage, i.e. larger uploads (but there is no limit at the moment) or something that will allow people on the board freely but more features are available if you pay £5 or £10 a year. That way people can come on get the help, make friends and then after a few months or a year or so they can up their membership.

Just a few thoughts.

Stuart

After a bit of thought, aren't we talking about two separate issues?

1) Keeping the pollution level down and 2) contributing to running costs?

1) Needs a change to the admin policy - like when you register you agree to bring only good karma and not flame or (etc - whatever is agreed) and then some active administration. i.e. instant killing of unpleasantness Mr Cholomondeley-Warner.

But do the volunteer admin guys have the time / resource to do this? And unpaid?

2) Yes, I see everyone's point about the other free forums - how do they deal with unpleasantness or does everyone get it? Even so, I am still prepared to pay.

Some other thoughts on money - range of clothing and stuff with profits to forum; paypal donations; interesting that Smithy thought it fair for traders to pay a little more - how about other traders?

Stuart's post is also OK by me - i.e. free to all but with added level for money.

I think it should be left alone largly as it is but we shoudl pay a fee so if the said member gets out of hand they can delete him and he loses his money, eventually they will stop, simple as that.

Hi Warren - my point was that they could be turfed off by the administrators even if this is a free forum. The admin guys already have that right (it's their toy and they can do what they like).

But it would still be nice to have some way of contributing to costs in any case.

More ideas - whiprounds at meets, raffles at Billing (hassle suppliers for prizes), advertising page on the site

Hi,

I have no problem with paying dough to get on this site, but I think it would erode what it has developed into!

From a newcomer's point of view I see some posts that have developed into a playground fighting corner, with even some administrators getting involved.

I don't think that a charge would eliminate this, the only thing that can eliminate this is stricter controls on Posts.

Maybe you could start off with a rule on no effing and blinding. If people break this they cannot post for a couple of weeks.

If people start slagging each other off then give them some time off the forum and delete the thread.

If people learn that they can't be heard unless they communicate resonably, then they will communicate resonably.

Just a point I payed and joined the Z Club, and their forum is much quieter than this one with a fraction of the information.

Mark

I would pay for it cos its worth it but I also agree with Mark.
