Who out there owns an import car, and who has a UK spec car?....I know original UK spec owners look down on the import Guys biggrin.gif as all these cheap imports have de-valued their cars! wink.gifBut which is best?......... biggrin.gif

At the end of the day a Z is a Z! UK or IMPORT.

I think the only major advantage of a UK car is the insurance biggrin.gif IMHO!!!

Do Imports have HICAS?, I couldn't find one with it when I was looking for a Z.

I know 2+2 Twin Turbo imports have HICAS. I think also the 2 seater TT.

But I belive the Non-turbo version(both 2+2 and 2 seater) doesnt have HICAS as standard(not sure if it was an option however).

Some of the N/A guys will have to confirm this though.

Trev.

Trev, you're correct...the NA's do not have HICAS.(wasn't an option either)

However I remember reading somewhere (I think it was on the nissan.co.jp-site), that the 1999/2000 NA-models do have HICAS.

Don't think there's much to choose between them really, except the UK model has headlamp washers.

And BTW my import was not cheap (£15K !), but it was cheaper and in better condition with lower mileage than the equivalent UK models at the time.

i have import, and to be honest i never even thaught about it. I saw the zed i wanted, paid a fortune for it, and got it.

HICAS was an option on Jap spec NAs.

I have a UK Spec and didn't even entertain looking at Jap Specs as I was warned off them.

Mind you, 2 years ago I paid something like twice what they are worth now, but that was with a brand new engine and turbos smile.gif. I have the service bill to prove it biggrin.gif

Not alot between them, an import you save on the original cost and generally get a lower mileage car.

A UK car costs more, has higher mileage, but is cheaper to insure.

I just wanted a good zed I wasnt bothered if it was uk or import. I ended up with import because all the uk ones in the north east had more miles on the clock than the space shuttle, bald tyres and rotten exhausts and were 11 grand.

mdma is no good in a field i'll sort out lsd instead and i'll laugh along with you all as i like nothing better than a trippy weekend.i have an import which for me is good but given the choice i would have a uk one as then the insurance is cheaper you will be able to get recall items such as the ptu etc and wont have dealers looking at you with scorn when you go in and i wont even go into the light bulb problems for import owners

Yeah! It's crazy...you can insure a Twin Turbo UK car for less than an import NA!

get your heads round this one, I wanted an NA, so it had to be an import.

Hi,

I purposely bought a manual NA as well...as it suited my purposes at the time!

You get all of the looks, quite a lot of the performance (although not compared with modded TTs obviously) and less of the problems...i.e.no turbos or Hicas to worry about.

However, I would consider a manual TT for my next Z, as I would like the extra acceleration provided.

Headlamp...bulbs......

Having to translate the fuse panel diagram...

In have import...its been brilliant...

I'm on my third Zed - and this is my first Import - and it was'ant cheep by any stretch of the imagination! I prefer the spec. of this car to the two previous auto's that I have had. I like the 'HOLD' and 'POWER' options and of course the folding mirrors.

I'm certainly V pleased with my import - and it did'ant cost me anymore for insurance!

I have only had the car 7 months - so stay tuned!

There are some excellent technical gurus on this site who will outshine my contribution but hey, it's Friday.

The "European" Z was enhanced to cater for long distance high speed Autobahn travel, and so was fitted with larger rads for water and oil (including a diff rad).

Detail changes include different (headlight bulbs); headlight washers; badging; fog and turn lights - are the ones I can recall.

My import appears to have different turbo impellers - ceramic (I think the UK model has metal?). Also a number of imports I have seen have a "fitter looking" steering wheel with no Airbag or Cruise Control.

It would be great to know the other differences - come on you gurus.....

Re: Ceramic impellers on Jap imports -

There was a discussion about this on aus300zx.com back in July(Jeff TT will know about this one). Heres the post and the replies http://network54.com/Hide/Forum/message?forumid=70520&messageid=994582539

Seems jap imports have a steel compressor wheel, Henri Le Hir posted http://network54.com/Hide/Forum/message?forumid=70520&messageid=994594065 on the subject. Ceramic impellers are standard on Skyline GTR turbos I belive(but many change to steel for high boost).

If your import has ceramic impellers you may not have standard turbos.

Trev

I think UK / Europe TTS also have a diff oil cooler and 30%bigger radiator - for autbahn cruising!

Diff oil cooler only operates over 90mph I fink. Gets used a lot in UK then!

Thanks for the references Trev. Makes interesting reading.

Fyi, I think my turbos are standard, and it may be that Nissan changed to ceramic (home market). My car is a 1994.7 (so called 1995) model. Perhaps could be considered a series 2 with a few upgrades, such as electric HICAS (as against the earlier hydraulic).

I guess ceramic is okay for upto Stage 3 (Exhaust, Induction + JWT Ecu), but perhaps not beyond there? Appeciate any technical advice.

Thanks, Geoff

I got an import and paid peanuts but it aint perfect but even when I've spent a few £1000 it'll still be cheaper than most! as far as UK v Import have had import bikes Blades R1s etc better specs etc and I've had an import MX5 with a turbo (lots of fun for a hairdressers car!!!) and a pretty quick 2.2vtec prelude! I think the specs are better and for the year the quality is better parts are just as available even through UK main dealers cos theyre gettin more used to it now!!

Just watch out where its from and who's imported it and that its got all the proper paper work!

I only bought cars with the full Jap service paper work and so far touch wood no probs!!

and I wouldnt say theyre more expensive to insure but not all insurance Co's will give insurance for imports!!!
