Hi All

Took Zed for MOT today Garage Phoned me last thing this afternoon with the bad news it Failed !!! broke the news gently.... 1: Fog lamp out. 2: Needs welding (Lots i think) 3: Will not pass any of the Emissions tests (all readings in Red) !!

The welding i will be having a discussion about when i go to see her on ramp in Morning, but the big thing they cannot sort out is the emissions they have tried Everything but cant see why it is failing all, any suggestions welcome.

I have had this car 11 years or so and do not want to scrap her if it can be helped, she still runs and pulls great and is pretty standard (1995 Pearl white) and how do you value it should the worst come, i havent got time to break it etc so if you have any ideas let me know please.

Hi

Just looked through paperwork and believe from Japanese papers that it was first registered as new in Feb 1995, (first registered in UK 2003)

You need to know if any ecu error codes.

Then I can pretty much guarantee that’s its been tested to the wrong standards, pre Aug 95 Z’s are subject to a Non Standard emissions test (aka non cat test). However, you need to make sure your V5 has the manufacture date as Feb 1995z Search the forum and there should be a post by me about what standard our cars are subject to with supporting documentation from VOSA

But by the sound of it you’ve got bigger issues to deal with

I agree with Nick, you should be able to get around the emissions thing assuming he’s testing it as a 300zx (which he can’t because it won’t be on his database) as he will have to cross reference the limit manually. Do you have a copy of the emissions test sheet by any chance and we can confirm this.

Thanks for info, Thing is i have been taking it to the same garage now for at least the last 5 years maybe more and never had an issue, also he is a very good mechanic and Bodywork expert so has done a fair bit on her for me to a very good standard, but i will ask what test standards they are using in morning. But as you say the welding issue may be the bigger problem depending what is needed !! he did mention on phone it may be a lot of work.

The regulations are changing regularly so it can be confusing if a tester is doing 99.9% “normal” test criteria based on the year. It’s usually the case that the tester can’t find the model on the test machine and so just inputs it as a 350z which has a stricter test criteria.

For info, these are the figures he should be working to taken from the current edition of the test criteria:

Hi

Just got car back this morning, welding is quite a big job rear suspension mounts badly corroded Estimated about £1000 !! then for the emissions which were tested correctly to try injector clean and give her a Long run at constant speed to try and clear her out.

Not sure what to do yet Try and keep her or sell on as she is for someone else to enjoy and use it more than i do i only do short journeys and about 2500 - 300 miles a year

Any advice or suggestions

Hi

No report printed as figures were in red on everything !! been suggested that because i only do short journeys too try injector clean on a good run to try and clear it, they tried some into a new fuel filter but its not made any difference, like they said no point welding if it wont pass emissions test which is sensible. but they cannot see any obvious reason as too why its failing, trying now too decide best course of action too take, ie: Spend money trying to clear the emission problem then spend lots on welding or just get rid of it as a running project ?

My guess would be you’ve got an injector failed open. This is easy to check. It could be a multitude of things but it’s probably something silly.

Does the car idle properly at 750rpm?

Without checking everything else over, like Timing, TPS, IACV etc etc that could be wasted time and money. You need to either work through or get someone who knows what they are looking at, to inspect it.

Another common trick for emissions is to disconnect the o2 sensors

Hi

Some good tips and advice coming through, but i do trust my mechanics, so having engine Terra Cleaned now then back to garage to see if if its made any difference to emissions, If nothing significant then she will have to go im afraid !! Any advice on where best to advertise as its quite a limited market for these cars.

GREAT NEWS had it Terracleaned give it a bit of beasting on a run back to garage and they did two tests on emissions and gave it a PASS !! It is definitely Revving smoother and seems to be pulling stronger and quicker, so now booked it for Rear suspension Mount welding job i will get some pics of her up. where is best to post them on here ?

There is a good write up about emissions, Google    ' Nissan 300zx  pass emissions test'      and you will find great article about what happens when you temp disconnect pipe from fuel damper at rear driver side of engine. I failed mot emissions took car away disconnected said pipe and passed with flying colours!!

I disconnect this pipe every mot and never had another emissions failure again  since

Ps don't forget to reconnect after mot!

The article was on 300zx-twinturbo.com

Dutch guy with pics.

Hope this is of use to somebody.
