Ian, any time you want to swap your professionally designed, developed and engineered OEM 99 spec HID headlights with sharp cut-off,

well defined beam pattern and no light scatter with my HID retrofitted halogen purposed headlights with poor cut-off, lousy beam pattern

and appalling light scatter just let me know.

My aftermarket HIDs blind people behind me and light up my prop shaft they have that much scatter!

How do they light up your propshaft ?

Have you fitted them on the rear ?

Ah yes seen this before seems you are suffering from some or all of the bad fitting, dirty reflector, poor quality xenon kit, scores of zeds out there with xenon kits fitted working just fine. We used our MOT beam setter when fitting kits, the cut off should be sharp and the same as non xenon, if not the above issues are the problem. 10 years worth of MOT`s with no mention of headlight pattern problems suggests we were getting it right.

I'm sure like many, Andrew's are fitted as best as can be. I purchased my first HID kit in 2005 in a DTA group buy. I shoved them straight in and they were an improvement over stock. Wanting more performance, I stripped the units down, thoroughly cleaning internally (including inside the lens), which definitely helped and I asked the MOT man if they were setup correctly. All was fine so they were as good as they were going to get. The beam cutoff was as sharp as the non-xenon, which is not very sharp but during the 11 years following that, no MOT tester has so much as mentioned it.

Since then I have tried them in a different set of headlights (new Z), I have tried comparison between H3 and H3C, I have set them up on the beam setter myself and no matter what is done, the beam pattern is a sharp as a disco ball! Yes there is a mild form of cutoff to the beam pattern but in and around this cutoff, light is thrown and wasted all over the shop. You can clearly see this when driving through tunnels.

I've never driven a MY99 car with an OEM xenon kit to compare but my daily drive (which is still fairly old tech), is infinitely better with globes designed specifically for xenon output. The picture that Andrew posted comparing the projector units on the Z32 has many associated videos and comparison of the light output between the 2; from what I can see the OEM xenon outperforms.

It's also worth noting that a stock xenon ballast is 35w whereas many kits nowadays are 55w and therefore they could potentially be "brighter" within the random areas that they are pointing at!

Andrew has extensively cleaned his headlights too IIRC.

Yes sure he has but must have another problem if the cut off is not sharp and scatter is a problem, the standard lamps when new were actually reasonable, its problems as mentioned above what make them so poor.

Even just fitting 100 watt halogen bulbs with out any cleaning or aligning causes more problems than good with excessive current draw and heat as well as the scatter and poor, my not so popular chrome film applied to the inserts made a huge difference the final plastic custom chrome inserts improve the effect of fitting xenons to the max.

Jeff

And just to add that having a chrome finish on the insert doesnt come into the equation on 99 spec xenons because the tube section of the insert from the projector lense to the outside is finished matt black. I guess to stop light bouncing around all over the place on its way to the front.

I was out in my Z last night and honestly the stock xenons are great. The cutoff is so crisp it doesn't compare to any halogen or other lights, it's like a solid border.

I have never seen a fuel tank needle so high in the gauge before Andrew.

I have, 7 times earlier in the month!
