4000 - 6000 HIDs would be best At least you'll be able to see the road ahead with those !

First question correct, although for HID H3 suffices, although saying that there are H3C hid bulbs (bit harder to come by, may be more expensive, the bulb is slightly shorter than a H3).

I've just picked an ebay seller out real quick here, buy 2 kits for spares, cheap enough these days.

Let us know how they perform Pete.

They will be fine...:thumbup1:.

I dont drive my 300 in the dark but you need headlights for an MOT:biggrin:

It just saves having a "discussion" with my tester about HIDs etc etc.

I've never had a problem with the MoTtest with mine

Don't blame you Pete, one less thing to deal with and break. I've considered doing the same as one of ballasts started playing up, if a bulb blows you can't get them off the shelf etc. As you say the stock covers what you personally need.

Yes worth having a few spare i bought some H3C off Jeff and keep em in my ctr console just in case my hids fail but i have spare hid bulbs and ballasts too a mantra learned well from phutumsch

There's no hassle with MOT & HIDs ! It's the MOT tester that needs to be on the ball.

The MOT states if HIDs are fitted then the headlight washers if fitted, should work!

As mine is an import, have HIDs but no headlight washers fitted so no problem!

I think that's right as I have just had an MOT, but last year had to explain the ruling to them!

In my experience 4500k will not be super crisp white, they'll have a yellowish tinge to them but will still be considerably whiter than the old filament type.

I've been buying a few down light bulbs recently for the home and all have been the 'daylight' 6500k ones and are very white but according to the spectrum should be tinged with blue but are not at all.

In the process i tested out a few 4000k GU10's, white of course but when tested alongside a 6500k bulb you could see they were not as white, if you see what i mean !!

i referbed my headlights last year and had all the reflectors re-silvered or vacuum metalised as it's called, when i initially fitted them one of my hids broke so i used the 35w h3c as i had a couple, and the lights were fantastic, it showed just how bad the reflectors can go. i've now got 4200k hid's in and the lights now are as good as any new car

Have you got details of the guys who did the re silvering please matey ?

The company was called invictavac the guy I dealt with was George, basically you have to strip the reflectors out and send them with cash payment I think if was £130 for all 4 reflectors it took about 2 weeks at the time. Just email with reflector sizes and a pic and he'll quote you

I paid £15 for 6500k so if u r going to pay £130 to get them like new they still no match for HID's

If u get what I mean?

So I am assuming to convert my JDM car to HID I simply need the H3 HID Kit? What are the best bulbs to choose the 5000k or 6000k?

Under the new MOT rules introduced this year you may have the car failed with aftermarket HIDs fitted. Worth checking beforehand.

To answer your question, yes H3 kit is the type required for dipped beam. It is down to personal choice as to the Kelvin rating but

6000k is normally considered the highest to use.

Project 1547 - Out of the Blue

She's so fine, there's no tellin' where the money went - Simply irresistible.

I replaced my HID with normal bulbs for the MOT it's only a 5 min job.

I have the ice white bulbs but when you see them next to HIDs they look dull!

The other bulbs worth a look are PIAA bulbs & there about £30 I believe.

I have 4500k in mine. They do have a mild slight blue tinge from some angles, but they are bright and don't look like they're aftermarket which is what I was keen to get away from. I had 6000k prior and wasn't so keen on.

New 2018 rules :

Some vehicles may be fitted with High Intensity Discharge (HID) headlamps. It is not permitted to

convert existing halogen headlamp units for use with HID bulbs. If it is clear that such a conversion has

been carried out, rather than replacing the entire unit with one designed and approved for use with HID

bulbs, the headlamp should be rejected.

Still open to interpretation and opinion though. There is nothing in the rules that clarify how a tester should check if that headlamp is designed and approved for HID bulbs. The old HID headlamp washer requirement issue has now been changed to only apply to 2009 onwards vehicles.

For those with HID's, for the sake of 5mins work, its probably best to to just swap them over at MoT time rather than try to argue the point.

Or hide the HID ballast under the nose panel so the mot tester can't see its a HID in the first place.

Unfortunately the light intensity and the initial delay to get up to full brightness on start-up are clear giveaways and something the new MOT regulations state for testers to check for.
