How sensible are Fibreglass bumpers? I've only ever lived with urethane or metal. Urethane has its obvious advantages, being virtually indestructible, however it's drawback is cost and availability. The reason I'm asking is I'm sorely tempted to fit a replica FG 99 spec. I know someone's going to say buy an OE one but the cost is not something I can justify, remember it's not just bumper it's the indicators, shipping, tax etc etc. Quite a chunk for something 100% cosmetic. Where as I can sort myself out with a fibreglass version for about half. Finding a used 99 is the obvious answer but when the average post for little everyday parts in the wanted section goes unresolved or even unanswered it's a greased unicorn.

So thoughts and experiences. Will I regret it as I smash it to pieces in a months time rolling down the driveway as it shatters like sugar glass or is it just a case of if I have a bump the damage will be worse (however easily repaired).

I love the 99 bumper, but I'd be worried about side skirts encouraging rust

Surely skirts should discourage it if anything? Nissan actually announced them as "sill protectors" as I recall. The obvious problem being that you won't see rust as soon.

AKA crud catchers. They might protect them from chips, but it isn't chips that are the cause of the rust.

Slightly off topic, but would anyone have any idea of the paint code for the second picture?

If it's a stock colour then it will be 326.

I don't think the 99 bumper works that well without side skirts, the side profile's don't match. The 99 is much straighter than the curved sills

I think its more to do with how the skirts are fitted that cause the rust, most people bond them on all around which doesnt allow the water to drain out the bottom. My stillen skirts have no fixings at the wheel arches at all.

The rusting sills is more of a design flaw from new, rusting from the inside out and the wheel arches have no seam sealar at the joint so its another point for water ingress.

Don't you have a drill to fit skirts normally? That's what scares me

To do it securely yes, you can tiger seal them but they would never be truly rigid and I wouldn't personally trust it on its own.

Then again, after you drill the hole, the hole is filled with rivet so would still be mostly waterproof, and they have drainage holes in the bottom of the sills anyway so water can drain out.

Cars are built using pu adhesive. I assure you if used correctly it will hold very well indeed, but it has to be applied in the right places. I didnt use any on mine.

I have version r 99 spec skirts, and they have no bottom to them.

So can't catch anything...

I think they go well with 99spec front bumper they bring it all to the same height.

Otherwise 99spec front bumper looks lower then rest of car...

They have panel clips along the top

I don't have pics underneath at moment but in a few places have plastic bars going across with panel clips.

But most of bottom is open so can see original sills...

She's looking good Terry.

It's an old pic not been on road now for about 3 years I think...

Still clean and works OK but sold front bumper and need to buy another.

Maybe 1 day...but why it's in garage it's safe and not rusting...
