Right, thought I'd start this. As some of you may know my cars a bit broken at present and I have a pile of parts ready to fit that gets bigger without it making its way to the car.

So lets start with what's up with the engine. Myself and gaz pulled the engine about two winters ago now, as one of the turbo's had failed. Compression was tested at this time with a very even 170psi across the board. Pulling it all apart we found a multitude of issues, egr hanging off causing an exhaust leak old sockets rolling about etc etc. We took that time to replace every damn crusty water and vac pipe and delete just about anything I considered a waste of space.

Water plenum bypass,

EGR,

AIV,

PRV,

Cruise control,

Aircon,

Think that's all. The turbos were rebuild by myself and for the first 50-100 miles things were bob on and I didn't give it too much stick. The first couple of pulls it detonated, new plugs, reduced the issue but it still did it a bit. Changed to a smaller gap and great the det was gone. The car was pulling very well at this point with virtually no lag and was dyno'd at 289hp bone stock, no extra boost no chip. Not bad for an old auto engine. Sadly it had started to smoke on over run, I assumed id cocked up one of the turbos during the rebuild. So I had been putting it off for months, well actually years now to pay out for brand new turbos. Anyways as the tax ran out I thought id do some more inspecting as the symptoms just didn't fit the pattern of failed turbos. The first thing I found was that lovely even compression was no more, cyl had a rather lame 115psi. Cue further inspection to work out exactly what block I had, manual/auto etc I assumed it was auto. That's when I found this...

That head casting reads R-10Y, wtf is that I thought. It's supposed to read 40P this was one of those penny drop moments. The piston crown sealed that moment of realisation and many dots connected.

image_zpsb1a5fbe7.jpg

That's right its an NA, 30p pistons are NA and 30p1 are TT defiantly no 1 on that code. Turns out r-10y is the later spec NA head aswell, so yeas 100% an NA block. Now this engine was fitted by a garage 4 years ago a few months into my ownership and we wont go into that too much but it wasn't a great experience and it transpires it was worse than I first thought. Anyway whilst they refused to reimburse me for that error, a good will gesture was sent out to me in the post of a few quid.

So a replacement engine is going to be sourced and fitted this winter. More of that and what's happening to the current late spec NA block.

So now more about that shelf of parts. I purchased last winter a full rear subframe assembly off Jaffa, the one off his time attack car. Loads of goodies already polybushed to death etc. So I stripped it down to bare metal and started painting it all with a few coats of lovely hammerite. This is how it stands at present;

image_zps5de24f69.jpg

So this winters aims are.

Remove front and rear bumpers, re underseal all of that and rip out and guff.

Delete HICAS system

Reloacte PS reservoir and fusebox

Switch over all suspension to new units from the shelf

Fit 354mm diameter brembos

Change engine out and preform various mods

It sounds like a lot, but hey winter is along time. Don't expect it to be coming through thick and fast. Im lazy haha

Er no...lol. TBF that was one of the easiest jobs I've done recently. Time consuming but one of those things you can just relax and tinker away. I did consult the FSM and text gaz a few times for reassurance but yeah, Nissan made it pretty user friendly.

Dam lol Keep up the good work mate and get that Z sorted.

Who is doing your cambelt btw?

That's fair enough, the cost to come to England for that would drag things out of proportion I guess. I'm sure they will do a Stirling job. If I can do it as an ammature(it's not worked yet mind haha) then I'm sure a professional garage can.

Picked up the bits from Si today, or rather he dropped them off to me when I was in swindon. So that's a result. Got back and fitted the battery and fired her up. So we have life. It's running on five ATM but il sort that, hopefully it's something silly, the old engine was runnin on five aswel but I didn't keep track of which plug and coil pack was which.

Front bumpers on. And the rear suspension is assembled. Just gotta fix the misfire, fit and bleed the brakes and oh work out what's going on with the damn horn which appears to have got disconnected.

  • Author

Right this misfire is annoying me now. I've done what I can this morning without turning the engine on, Sunday morning with no back boxes is a bit antisocial. The injector ohms good, tested them all during assembly anyway, the coil pack ohms good, so now it's just a case of weather they are getting power or rather which one isn't. I did try to take a voltage reading from the injector connector which is something I've not tried before, but couldn't get 12v AC or DC from any of them ignition on or off... Maybe it's time to get a noid light on it. I have swapped the coil pack from a known worker but as I say It did ohm good.

need it running really to identify the cylinder, then check if plug is wet. From there you can then focus on fuel or spark.

  • Author

It's cyl 1 mate, identified it yesterday. Yeah your right just at 8am on a Sunday, she's a little loud right this second lol. I pulled the plug too it was dry but I went and gave it some heat just incase it was fuel fouled which it wasn't.

Right, I just realised after rereading some bits. The positive supply to the injector is constant the negative however is switched at the ecu, therefore you need to go injector positive to ground to take the 12v reading. Which after trying it, it does.

  • Author

Right, injector is supplied 13v and seems functional. So the fault appears to be spark related, the node light for the spark says no and I pulled the plug etc and tried it nothing. So I know the fault just need the cause.

  • Author

Sorted. Had a chat with gaz and he said check the ptu, after some chatting between us it was obvious the most likely fault was an incomplete circuit from the ptu to the coil. Popped the ptu out and low and behold one of the pins was green, odd really as the rest were clean as a whistle. Anyway clean it up and tried again. Boom we are back on six! :hyper:

Also got the horn working. Stupid Bosch relay that's been hacked to bits more than once causing the fault, so the wiring goes from the connector behind the indicator to the horn, works a beauty. Which is the important thing.

The exhaust is now on. I've got left;

Fit front brakes, including trim dust shield so they fit.

Fit tension rods.

Swap out upper front arms, seriously these things are a pain so I left the bolts to soak in WD.

Bleed brakes, ps and coolant.

Check and set ignition timing.

Then there's general stuff like under trays etc.

Mot alignment.

Done.

If I get that lot done by Saturday il be very surprised lol. Ive got a job to go to as well.

  • Author

Brakes are on. Upper arms and tension rods on. PS blead. Just got to bleed the brakes and check the timing the rest is non mot faf. Then get it MOT'd.

Get a move on then!!:tt2:

Good luck Steve as you,ve done well the last few months. Yes ive been reading this thread most nights:thumbup1:

Cheers Bri. Tried to bleed the brakes this afternoon, I got one of those self bleeding kits. Utter crap, it doesn't seal well enough to retain the vacuum. Old fashioned method tomorrow night it is. This is essentially the only thing now that stands between me and an mot.

  • Author

Got some fiddly crap done today. Just waiting on my helper to bleed the brakes. The mot is booked for 4pm tomorrow, so fingers crossed all goes smoothly. That's me finishing work on time, the brakes bleeding properly and it passing it's mot. This is how it looks right now. Dirty but more complete than it has been for about 4 months.
