Posted October 21, 20168 yr So, following my recent unfortunate incident, I'm looking for a new shell. Ideally I wanted a series 2 car as that's what I currently have. Anyway, finding a good series 2 car seemed stupidly hard, so I'm going to go get a series one car. Anyway, given I'm going to be getting a rolling shell, I'm going to need to move everything over. Wiring loom, engine, gearbox and pedals, interior (S2 into a S1 car) including the electrics. My problem is that I'll be doing everything on my drive. How hard of a job is this going to be? I think I'm mainly worries about moving the engine and gearbox as I've never done anything like this before. Is there a specific order I should be doing stuff in? Like any hints and tips etc. Membership No 0780 INSURANCE GOOFA Datascan, Conzult, ECUTalk and a few others I have all the rare bits you can't find :tongue:
October 21, 20168 yr Would it not be easier and quicker to get a body shop to jig your old zed straight ? Doing a shell swap on the driveway at this time of year with limited tools, cover and light ( clocks go back end of the month ) will be a long, long drawn out process. Of course your neighbours will be peed and the missus fed up of the house looking like a scrap yard and be careful of local council laws. Repairs are one thing but a shell change could be viewed as something different. Of course then you have the shell id to register assuming you get the V5 of course and then the hundreds of small screws bolts brackets and trim to content with! On your drive way ?? no do not do it bud. Jeff
October 21, 20168 yr It was harrowing enough doing a manual conversion on a driveway!! I don't envy you here whatsoever, Lee.........
October 21, 20168 yr You need time and mates, and some nice tools would help too. Ive been stripping my car at the weekends and i've made pretty good progress with just an engine pull and gearbox drop left to do, so from my point of view its plausible if you have the enthusiasm and commitment, but as Jeff said its getting cold and dark now.

October 21, 20168 yr Author Cheers lads. I think its the engine and gearbox and pedals that's daunting to me. Might be worth me paying someone to move those over then do the rest myself Membership No 0780 INSURANCE GOOFA Datascan, Conzult, ECUTalk and a few others I have all the rare bits you can't find :tongue:
October 21, 20168 yr If you are doing a swap with everything then I personally would try to waxoil and rust treat every nook and cranny of the the donor zed before putting anything back in it, If you are determined then you can accomplish anything but it will be hard work on the driveway and as pointed out the winter is soon upon us, but yes if your determined there is plenty of help here for you

Makes sense, the car is rust free and low mileage so defo makes sense to go down the prevention route :-) Membership No 0780 INSURANCE GOOFA Datascan, Conzult, ECUTalk and a few others I have all the rare bits you can't find :tongue:

The issue is mainly where there's a hole right next to the mounting bracket for the front upper control arm which would be difficult to fix. And given the price I could get a new and better all round shell, ive kind of come to the decision that might be the better overall option. I repaired the back arches and that on the black zed last year but its bound to be back at some point etc. Membership No 0780 INSURANCE GOOFA Datascan, Conzult, ECUTalk and a few others I have all the rare bits you can't find :tongue:

October 22, 20168 yr "Winter is coming" and "you know nothing..." Im finding it hard enough just to break my car and thats in a container. October 22, 20168 yr Depends how far your going to go and what you buy. Swapping your door cars and seats in is a weekend job with a few cups of tea and detours. For a first timer to pull an engine and box will take a weekend, then obviously if the donor has an engine in it that's gotta come out too so double, then refit. You can't really just say swapping to a new shell will be easy or hell because you don't know what you've got yet. Seems to me your already missing a trick, "I have two zeds already" no you currently have one and three quarters. Be bold and make one good car out of two.
October 22, 20168 yr DBe bold and make one good car out of two. I've told him this a few times now... :thumbup1:
October 22, 20168 yr Author Lol. Thing is, the blue wide arch is a low mileage car (around 60 or 70k). Is also a manual etc too so kind of thing ID like to keep that one as it is. Maybe turn in to more of a show car than a daily user. The black one is my real love. I like the way it looks, fairly stock but not quite. Its a beast as has a powerful engine etc. I just genuinely love the way the black on is, especially since I did the 'make it look better' thread. It for to a point where it was lovely. All I had leafy to do was the camber on the front wheels and the stillen lip - which has now arrived. I kind of see them as 2 completely different cars all round really. October 22, 20168 yr I don't know your mind, financial situation or time constraint and I don't think it's my business but for me I can't have that much going on to have too of the damn things. With the parts on the black one you could make the blue one a beast and sell the unused parts and actually end up with one nice car and cash in your pocket. The choice as they say though is yours.
October 22, 20168 yr Hear what your saying lee, but the job your thinking of taking on is enormous at home, be sad to see in 12 / 18 months time you selling the bits as the " project " stalled" and never was completed its an age old situation where the original enthusiam gets sucked up in hours of relentless work with slow progress making it worse.
